Some people think that cats require less maintenance than dogs. While cats don't require several walks a day, they do still need to be mentally and physically stimulated. Here are some fun indoor activities you can enjoy with your kitty these cold winter months.
Encourage your cat's hunting skills using feather wands or motorized toys. These toys mimic prey animal movements, encouraging your cat to run and jump as they hunt.
Create vertical space for your cat. Cats love to survey their environment from up above. Use cat trees and floating shelves to create fun vertical areas for your kitty to explore, or save money and clear some higher places you already have including bookshelves, closets, and existing shelves.
Provide lots of appropriate scratching surfaces. Cats scratch to keep their nails healthy, stretch their muscles, and leave their scent for other animals. If they don't have appropriate places to scratch, they may end up leaving their mark on furniture and curtains. Scratching posts and pads come in a variety of shapes and materials so it might take some experimentation to figure out what your feline friend prefers.
Create a treat puzzle toy. Like dogs, cats love to use their brains. Get them thinking by standing up a bunch of toilet paper rolls in a box and hiding treats in some of them. Or, cut holes in a plastic bottle (big enough for treats to fall out), fill it with treats, and let your kitty bat it around to get the goodies out.
Have some indoor fun with your feline friend and let us know how it goes!
