Tequila’s got her fly pants on!

You might notice Tequila and some of her friends wearing these special pants around the sanctuary. They aren’t just a fashion choice. They’re designed to protect her from flies and other biting insects.

Flies can cause a lot of irritation for donkeys, especially on their legs and lower body. Fly pants help keep them comfortable, prevent bites, and reduce the risk of skin infections. They let Tequila enjoy her day without all the buzzing bother.

Next time you visit, see how many donkeys you can spot showing off their smart (and very practical) fly pants. You’ll see just how stylish good donkey care can be!

Say No to the Estill Industrial Development in Puslinch

As part of the Puslinch community, the Donkey Sanctuary of Canada is deeply concerned about the proposed Estill Industrial Development.

Through the Puslinch by Design study, our community already came together to plan for responsible growth and the results were clear: Lands B and C were not chosen for industrial or employment use.

The Estill proposal goes against that community vision and the expert recommendations that shaped it. Approving it would:
- Ignore the findings of Puslinch by Design
- Undermine the voices of residents who participated in good faith
- Set a precedent that threatens careful, thoughtful planning

For the Donkey Sanctuary of Canada, this isn’t only about planning. Industrial development so close to our sanctuary farm would permanently alter the quiet, rural environment that allows our donkeys to live safely and peacefully. Protecting farmland, green space, and community trust is essential to the wellbeing of both people and animals in Puslinch.

We believe in progress , but it must be the right kind of progress, in the right places, and aligned with the plans we’ve worked hard on together as a community.

Let’s stand together for a future that respects our environment, our residents, and our animals. Join Help Protect Puslinch to learn what you can do to help.

We’re delighted to share that Opal, Pebbles, Rachel, and Ellie have returned to the sanctuary farm from their DSC Host Farm, and this time they’ve brought a new friend along with them, Isabelle!

These five mini jennies have been living at a very knowledgeable and caring host farm where they received lots of attention and excellent care. The family spoke so highly of their sweet manners, and they shared their appreciation for the DSC's training and volunteer grooming programs, noting how well-handled the donkeys were before coming to the Host Farm.

Sadly though, the family needed to begin downsizing their farm. It was not an easy choice, but one made with the best interests of the animals in mind. We are very grateful for the kindness and commitment this family showed to Opal, Pebbles, Rachel, Ellie, and Isabelle during their time together.

Now, these five little donkeys are settling back in at the sanctuary farm, ready to enjoy the next chapter of their journey together. We couldn’t be happier to have them here again and we know you’ll join us in giving them the warmest welcome back!

Something a little different at the sanctuary! On Sunday, September 14th during our Open Day from 1–3pm, visitors will have the chance to enjoy a special fossil display and presentation with Marlowe Andreyko from Dino Bites in the Learning Centre here at the DSC! Save the Date for the Fall Seniors' Day at the DSC!

Join us on Tuesday, October 14, from 11:00 am – 3:00 pm, for a special day dedicated to seniors. Stroll the sanctuary grounds, meet the donkeys, and enjoy a calm, quiet atmosphere designed just for you.

On this day, the sanctuary will be reserved for seniors (other adults may attend if accompanied by a senior). We kindly ask that children not attend on this day, so our senior guests can enjoy a peaceful experience with the donkeys.

And don’t miss the chance to say hello to Da Vinci, our most senior donkey at 39 years. He will be waiting to greet you!

Happy Star Trek Day from all of us at the DSC!

Our barn cat Captain takes his duties very seriously, explaining the day’s mission to Aiden! The goal? To boldly seek out fresh hay and new adventures (and maybe a good nap in the sun).

From Captain, Aiden, and the whole DSC herd: live long and bray on!

Ted has just started learning with clicker training!
Clicker training is all about clear communication and positive reinforcement. The click marks the exact moment the right behavior happens. A reward follows and this builds confidence and motivation.
Because mules are natural problem-solvers, this kind of training is a great fit. It helps strengthen the bond between humans and animals while making everyday care safer and less stressful for everyone.
With Ted, we’re using clicker training to help him stay calm and relaxed, especially when work is being done near or on his hind end. This gives him the chance to think, make good choices, and build trust with his trainer.
We’re so proud of Ted for how well he’s learning already!

Billy Bob has headed out on a new adventure! Last month he moved to one of our DSC Host Farms where he joined the Host Farm's personal donkey Eeyore, along with Gracie and Colin, who are deeply bonded companions. With the recent loss at the Host Farm of another of their longtime donkey friends, we know Billy Bob’s kind presence will be a great source of comfort and companionship for this little herd.

We miss seeing his sweet face here on the sanctuary farm, but we’re so glad to know he's bringing his calm and friendly spirit to his new donkey friends and enjoying some new toys there!

Miss Jenny is finding comfort in the company of her friends. Recently, we’ve spotted her sharing gentle buddy grooming sessions with Sabrina. These moments are so special, as many of you know Miss Jenny’s closest companion, Molly, passed away not long ago.

While the loss was difficult, it’s wonderful to see Miss Jenny building new connections and finding support in her herd. Donkeys are deeply social animals, and grooming is one of the ways they show connection and strengthen bonds.

An little update on Sadie's big adventure....

Born in 2000, Sadie has called the DSC home since 2014. Back in June, our care team noticed she was frequently urinating and developing some scalding on her hind legs. A visit from our vet and an ultrasound revealed the culprit: large bladder stones.

The treatment required a special field trip to the Ontario Veterinary College (OVC). There, the stones were carefully extracted (rather than dissolved) and Sadie stayed overnight so her bladder could be flushed the next morning. She returned home with antibiotics, pain medication, and medicine to support her urinary tract.

A week later, Sadie headed back to OVC for a recheck, quick ultrasound, and another flush and we’re thrilled to share that she got the all clear! She’s now much happier and back to her normal routine, stone-free.

And for those curious… the stones are now on display in our Learning Centre for visitors to see!

We’re so grateful to our veterinary and animal care teams and the OVC for helping Sadie feel her best again!
