NO DOG SHOULD LEAVE THEIR HOME WHEN TEMPERATURES ARE OVER 28 DEGREES.

Please be aware of your dogs in this weather as heat is the biggest killer of dogs. This time of year vets are so busy dealing with thousands and thousands of heatstroke cases most ending in permanent organ damage or worse death. If your pet’s temperature rises high enough, the heat starts to damage the organs and tissues, causing severe damage. Heatstroke can come on very rapidly, dogs can go from looking fine to collapsing in a matter of minutes. Many thousands of dogs die or end up with serious long-term medical problems because we are often unaware of just how dangerous hot weather is to dogs.
Sings of heat stroke to look out for are;

· Dehydration

· Bright red tongue

· Reddened gums

· Urinating only occasionally or not at all

· Rapid heartbeat or irregular beats

· Shock

· Fluid build-up in the lungs; sudden breathing distress

· Vomiting (sometimes with blood)

· Passage of blood in the faeces

· Black, tarry stools

· Small, pinpoint areas of bleeding

· Changes in mental status

· Seizures or Coma

· Muscle tremors

· Wobbly gait or movement

· Unconsciousness in which the dog cannot be brought round

Instead of walking them, get some treats out and teach your dog a new trick or work on tricks they already know by adding various times of holding each command around the house. Do this for 20 minutes and it will be more exhausting than walking your dog for an hour.

Good evening!!

Bonfire night is tomorrow, let's help our pets get through tomorrow night with as little stress as possible.

Not all dogs are afraid of fireworks, but many are due to the fact that their hearing is more acute than ours. Loud bangs, whistles, crackles and flashing lights can be very alarming to your pets and may pose a threat as your pet feels trapped and in turn can trigger their fight or flight instincts.

Here are a few tips to implement before tomorrow to create a safe space and to ensure your animals are as comfortable as possible;

1) Put some music or white noise in the background to help muffle the sound of the fireworks.

2) Make sure all curtains and blinds are closed.

3) If they are crate trained, ensure that it's available to them with a bed, blanket and toys. If they do not have a crate, they can go into one of the smaller rooms in your home with some toys, puzzles, bones, a bed and some blankets.

4) Make sure the water bowl is full as dogs and cats drink more when they are anxious.

5) Walk/exercise your dog earlier in the day - a long walk will help tire them out and as we know, a tired dog is a happy dog! You do not want to be out on a dog walk when the fireworks start.

6) Create a calming DIY wrap by putting a scarf or bandage around the dog’s chest, it must be snug but not constricting movement. This gentle pressure releases natural endorphins that can help your dog or cat feel calmer and more secure, like a nice hug!

If the fireworks have started and your dog needs to go out for a wee, then take them on their lead into the garden as then, if they are spooked, you will be able to prevent them bolting and possibly escaping out of the garden.

I know it can be difficult for owners when your pets are stressed and anxious, but please try not to show this around your pets as it makes the problems worse. Always stay calm and give praise for calm behaviour. It’s perfectly acceptable to stroke your pet and give fuss but only if it helps them relax and keep calm, but if they prefer to hide, please then let them do this.

If your pet has severe anxiety when it comes to firework season then I would suggest preparing well ahead of time by desensitizing them to the sound of fireworks (this will need to be done ahead of the event so will need further training).

And remember - ENSURE that your cats are inside and safe before it gets dark and the fireworks begin.

I hope you all have a lovely evening tomorrow and enjoy the fireworks!

This is Cassius, he is my 4 year old Cane Corso.
Cassius has been recovering from a serious injury and is finally ready to get back to all the things he loves!!

Cassius has spent the majority of his life helping other owners and their furry companions. Due to Cass spending over 12 months with little to no contact with dogs or other people, Cassius now needs to learn how to be a well rounded dog again. Cassius has a few behaviours that need modification, but not to worry as he will be back to his well rounded self in no time!

Cassius will be going through my 4 week training program and I look forward to our journey together!

SUMMER IS ON ITS WAY!

Just like us, dogs lose fluids and electrolytes in hot weather and while exercising. Without sufficient fluid intake they can become dehydrated easily which can lead to heat stroke!

Cucumbers are great, they are made up of 95% water, they are a low-calorie food and also make a terrific crunchy snack for your dog. This fruit is also amazing for providing vitamins C and K, cucumber containing electrolytes such as magnesium, calcium, potassium and phosphorous. They also contain an antioxidant called cucurbitacin, which has been shown to inhibit the activity of cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), a well-studied pro-inflammatory enzyme, it also can help stop cancer cells from reproducing.

HOW TO SERVE

Cut into bite-size pieces appropriate for your dog’s size. Feed as a treat or add to your dog’s food. You can offer with the peel on or off.

To make a refreshing electrolyte-infused drink, soak cucumbers in water overnight. Remove cucumbers and place the water down for your pup, ensuring that there is clean fresh water also available.

KEEPING YOUR DOG COOL AND HAPPY THIS SUMMER

Brain stimulation is a great way to help your dogs exude excess energy, the heat will prevent us from giving our dogs their usual lovely long walk, so instead why not get a toy or some treats and work your dog's brain! Just 20 minutes of brain stimulation is equivalent to an hour walk.

Ensuring hair is trimmed between paw pads will help your dogs regulate their body temperature.

Freezing a bandana works for long haired dogs.
Just wet it, pop it in the freezer and tie it around their neck!

Be responsible when walking your dogs, and be mindful how hot the pavement is!

05/11/2022

I shall be dividing my time between Upper Marham and South East London, my aim is to help as many animals and owners as I can. if you wish to book in a training session in either area please be aware there may be a short wait.

Thank you and I look forward to meeting your furry friends!!

YAY FOR LUCY'S LAW!

Lucy’s Law’ means that anyone wanting to get a new puppy or kitten in England must now buy direct from REGISTERED breeders, or consider adopting from a rescue centre instead. Licensed dog breeders are required to show puppies interacting with their mothers in their place of birth. If you sell puppies or kittens without a licence, you could receive an unlimited fine or be sent to prison for up to six months.

Please stop putting your dogs in situations that they are not yet equipped to handle, please stop asking them to do things you haven't yet taught them how to do.

Just like humans, dogs need guidance and instruction in order to understand. They will definitely make mistakes, just like humans do when learning, they will need time and space to learn just like us.

They aren't born knowing how to fit into this chaotic, and overwhelming world, they do not understand what's expected from them until you teach them!

Set them up for success by asking enough but not too much. Teach them what you expect from them instead of getting frustrated when they don't just "get it" on their own. Guide them through situations that are new to them or situations they struggle with.

They are capable of so much, if you just show them how.

I met Quincy and his lovely owner Becky around 2 years ago, upon our meet and greet I learned all about Quincy and his behaviour issues! He lacked general manners, struggled with impulse control and suffered from fear based reactivity.

These past 2 years Quincy and Becky have worked daily on his general training and behaviour modification, they have both come so far working on strengthening their lines of communication and have built such a beautiful relationship. I am blown away by every training session!

PRESENT DAY!!!!!

My dog Cassius was meant to be helpling me this day but sadly sustained an injury. In turn Quincy filled in for him! Quincy and myself came into Becky's classes to chat to her pupils about dogs and dog safety. They learned how to read a dogs body language to help understand when they are unhappy - covering around 6 different signs to look for when a dog is not happy and wants to be left alone; in hopes to reduce the risk of being growled at or worse case bitten!

I then covered how dogs learn and how we would go about teaching them new things! Quincy and I gave a demonstration and he showed off all his tricks. The pupils then had the chance to ask Quincy for things, Quincy was taught using various hand signals to understand commands, Becky's pupils were absolutely blown away by the fact they could sign to him and he understood!

Quincy had a brilliant day and lapped up all the attention from the children and teachers!

Thank you to Becky for interpreting for me and thank you to the school for having me, I look forward to returning with Cassius!!

Good morning and a happy New Years Eve!

Not all dogs are afraid of fireworks, but many are due to the fact that their hearing is more acute than ours. Handy little tip,

Make them work for their dinner or treats.
We give our dogs an easy life, dinner literally served to them on a plate. However, dogs love a challenge that mentally stimulates them. One of the best ways is to get them to do some simple tricks before giving them their food. Sit, wait, watch me– just a few simple commands before handing over their food or treat, they will really appreciate it, remember nothing is free not even for our four legged friends!
