Here’s a cool sequence Kelsie shot of Kali’s first time roping and dragging anything. She handled it and worked the rope real well with me. Now onto some heavier barrels to keep building her confidence and abilities. What a fun kid to teach this filly is!!

Last week was another wonderful and successful week full of progress with every horse we’ve got in for starting and education. We sure get a lot done that doesn’t end up on camera, but here’s a few fun shots Kelsie snagged from the last week. I’m so proud and excited with every single horse we’ve got in right now. Just a bunch of rockstars. I’m real excited to see how far we can take things this week!!

I’m so proud of this pretty mare. She’s really taking to the way we do things and I think she quite likes the change from her start in life on the track. She’s become a real pleasure to teach and ride! Well done Scarlett!!

Big to small, we start ‘em all 😂 Meet Pegasus, the 3 year old, tiny horse that we’re starting. She’s real smart and full of heart. Fortunately I ain’t all that big, haha. With the stirrups stripped off our small kids saddle, I’m putting some light rides on her, with a pile of groundwork, and she’s doing great! But I’m excited to see my 6 year old son getting on her in the coming week to help ride and teach, with my guidance for them both on the ground. Quite possibly the smallest equine I’ve rode or started.

The beautiful Scarlet. She’s a 6 year old, OTTB in for re-starting right now. She’s really taken well to her change in life and is really impressing us with how willing, kind and calm she has become. She’s such a treat to ride and I’m real excited to see how much we can accomplish together in her coming weeks with us.

Gibson, the adorable, 7 year old, 3/4 Welsh x QH, gelding. He came in late March to get a bit of a restart, further education and lots of exposure. He’s been a real pleasure to both teach and ride. Kelsie and I both have really enjoyed getting to know him and helping him grow as a horse. He’s real savvy, and smooth as silk. We’re both gonna miss riding this guy. But we look forward to furthering things for him and his lovely owner as we give them some future lessons in horsemanship to send them off with a solid partnership. You’re a rockstar Gibby!

This 4 year old Wildy gelding I went out to kind of do an assessment with for his owner, had been sent to a trainer. That trainer hadn’t got much done with him, told his owner that he was untrainable and they weren’t going to get on him anytime soon.

His owner brought him home. Feeling discouraged she contacted us and we decided to go out and meet the pony. I didn’t have much of a plan just wanted to go say hi, and see what he did and didn’t understand. I think it was about 45 minutes and I had him saddled and was on his back. He was calm quiet and a great little ride. He really took to me speaking horse with him and decided being rode was pretty fun.

Last I heard his owner decided to just try riding him herself after that and they’ve been having great experiences ever since!!

I always feel so blessed to have the opportunity to meet and ride all the amazing horses I’ve gotten to, get to and will get to in this life. Thank you all.

Millie and I had a fun exciting week. Kelsie caught some good shots of our first ride together early in the week.

She has been one to try and walk away from things that are scary to her. Kinda wallers a little bit. But I felt she was ready when I decided to swing my leg over her for the first time.

Now, when I say ready, I don’t mean that she was tired, dull or worn out. And, I don’t mean that I felt she was totally and completely going to accept me being up there right off the start. But, I do mean that I felt she needed a big step to help her gain an understanding of what “all this” has been building up to with me. And I do feel she was ready to go through this together.

I got up there, she tightened up a bit and as I slid my right leg into my second stirrup, she was pretty sure that she had all she could handle and lit up like a Christmas tree.

She hopped around for around 20 seconds, had a couple of pauses and fortunately for us both I was able to ride it all. She broke into a run and I just let her go for a few rounds until I felt her relax a hair. At that time I started asking her to gait down, she wasn’t sure she was ready for that so we took to a one rein stop.

We stood 30 seconds or so to pat her neck and let her know she’s doing great and I’m proud of her. Kelsie handed me back my hat....I backed Millie up, just a few nice soft steps, pat her again, asked her to walk out. Turned her hips, drew her nose each way, walked out nice, her head was down and things were much more relaxed with lots of tongue relief.

More smiles, more pets on the neck and mane, then a stop, another walk, a trot, a change of direction, some more pets. Then another walk, a trot, a lope, back down to a trot and a stop. Walk, stop, back, pats the neck. Dismounts, big hugs. Thanks for a great first ride Millie!

It’s definitely been a huge step for her. She’s been improving every day and I don’t think she’s gonna get humpy anymore.

We’re having more and more fun together every day.!She’s an incredible filly. Real happy to be starting this smart kid!

It’s been so much fun and such an honour to start working with this beautiful Warmblood filly Millie this week.

She’s beautiful, intelligent, strong, athletic, curious, graceful and full of heart.

At first, she wasn’t sure what to make of me. With my armitas, my big hat, my big ol’ wade saddle, flapping my crazy tarp, my flag and rope. And why do I insist she keep changing direction so frequently? Why did I keep asking her to transition up and down through her gaits and yet again insist she take my guidance? Why must I step my inside hind leg underneath myself? Why are you asking me to do so many things.....over...and OVER?

She said no a few times. No, I’ve done pretty well so far in life and I like the humans I know just fine. I’m not sure I’m interested in your games “Mr. Cowboy guy”.

She came to understand pretty quick that we can actually have a bunch of fun together. We can do new things, she can start to trust me and follow my lead and even find it fun and rewarding. That I can actually be a source of support and comfort.

She is proving herself to be the incredible young horse she is meant to be and I’m real excited for the coming week with her and all the fun things we are going to accomplish together before she goes back to her wonderful owner.

Meet Wildcat - he’s a 4 year old Mustang or “Cayuse”. He’s got a bit of a checkered past. He survived a cougar attack, as a two year old, I believe. After healing up and coming sound, a woman tried to start him and got in some bad wrecks. Some time after realizing he wasn’t a good fit for them, he came to us.

Soon after arriving, he went through/over some fencing and tore up his hind right leg pretty badly. That took a lot of doctoring by us to mend. Then we left him alone, and just monitored him as he really healed up completely, and we felt confident that he was ready to go to school.

I’ve began restarting him this week and things are going amazingly. He’s a super intelligent, sweet, kind, responsive, strong and athletic guy. I’m really enjoying teaching him. He’s a great kid and I can hardly wait for all the fun adventures and work we’re gonna experience together as we continue moving forward.

Here’s a short clip from part of Sunny’s day in school this morning. 😊

I’ve been having a great time teaching this pretty, 7 year old, mare over the past few weeks!

She still has a ways to go, as far as learning to be the best horse she can. And needs some body work, which is holding her back a bit. But, she’s got a lot more of a handle than she had when I first started working with her. I’m so pleased and proud of her!

She’s gained a lot of trust and respect, and she’s become far more pleasant to ride. She is still lacking some in trust/respect and will greatly benefit from continued consistent work and teaching.

I’ve just got a couple more days to work with her and she goes back to her owner. I hope they can continue their journey in life happily together and both continue to progress positively with their partnership.

Jewel here has come a long way already! She is relaxing tons and absorbing the things I’ve been teaching her wonderfully.

That being said, she still has quite the road ahead of her, as far as becoming the best horse she can be.

But she is super teachable, she is very smart, she’s got a strong personality, and I’m real excited to see how far she’s gonna come in the next few weeks.

This pretty girl “Jewel” arrived to us a couple of nights ago, and started her first day of school with us yesterday.

She’s young, and very green. From what we’ve been told, she was going pretty well, then started developing poor habits. It sounds like these habits grew further, into dangerous behaviours. She’s here now and we can see she’s just not been properly taught all the things she should know. She lacks trust, confidence and respect and I see these and other steps missed along the way of teaching her up until now.

She is sweet, and very curious, I can see her showing interest in learning and working with us, and I’m very excited to teach her and help her moving forward as a safe, confident horse for her owner/future people who ride or handle her.

to this big ol’ paint. I can’t for the life of me remember his name. I believe he was 16 years or around there at the time.

He came to me, from a sweet older lady, in 2014 or 2015.

She had acquired him coming through an auction, knowing that he was retired as a pro saddle bronc, and in the hopes that she could give him a new life. He had been retired on account of him getting mean and going after riders when they hit the dirt.

Her hopes were to help him become a quiet ranch horse a body can rope off of. I said I’d give it my best shot, but made no promises.

She hauled him out to me near Sundre, Ab and he sure was built to buck, you could see that right off. But damned if I didn’t spend two days working with him on the ground before swinging my leg over him on the third day, without a single hump, stack, jump, hop, skip or anything of the sort. He took to learning like he was watching all them pick up horses over the years with envy or something.

He was smart, soft and responsive. Taking to a new way of working under saddle and working with a rider like he really wanted to. He had tons of try and I just kept pushing him.

Two months later he was carrying that sweet older lady around and roping calves for their branding.

I may not remember your name buddy...I often forget names, but I won’t ever forget you and I hope you’re still having fun!!

Here’s a throwback to a real cool mare I started back in 2015 I believe, in Sundre, Alberta. She was a totally untouched 4-6 year old (at the time), paint mare, purchased untouched from an auction a couple of years prior to coming to me.

This older cowboy was bringing in a 3 year old curly gelding to get started and taught his basics in roping and ranch work. When he ran the gelding into his trailer from pasture to haul him to us, this pretty paint mare followed in and ended up coming to me at the same time.
No one could get near her, and we just backed the trailer up to a smaller section of pasture I kept 6-10 horses in at a time and let her blow out.

This picture, I’m pretty sure, was taken 3 or 4 days later.

I used my dun gelding the next morning, sorted her from the herd I had her in with, threw a loop on her and led her into the round pen. She took to things like a pig to mud and within a few weeks you could do almost anything around the ranch with her.
She was soft, supple, relaxed, responsive and full of try. Another horse I won’t ever forget and feel blessed to have had the opportunity to know. ❤️
