Cray-Zee Critters (formerly CrayZfish & Critters) is a Syrian hamster breeder and small animal rescue located in Regina, Saskatchewan.

Our focus as a breeder is to bring quality, friendly hamsters to the prairies. CrayZfish & Critters is a Syrian hamster breeder and small animal rescue located in Regina, Saskatchewan. As a rescue we work primarily with small mammals such as hamsters and guinea pigs, and birds such as budgies, lovebirds, and cockatiels.

We received an update yesterday on Pablo, formerly known as Prongs from Luisa and Zeratu’s Team Canada litter! 😍 “Still a match made in heaven!”

Pablo was the first of his litter to be adopted, and one of our personal favourites. 💕 The bond he shares with his hooman is so precious. 🥹 Thank you to his family for allowing us to share!

It’s finally time to introduce everyone to our newest breeder, Tara! 🐹 Tara joined our family on May 21. She is a beautiful, hefty girl, averaging 155g, with a personality just as large and gorgeous.

Tara recently gave birth to a record-breaking litter of 14 pups! We’ll have more information on the little ones later. 🥰

We were looking at old photos the other day and found our favourite one of Geode, our hamster mama who started it all. 💕 Admittedly, at the time we didn’t truly understand the dangers of exposing her to the outdoors: parasites, diseases, toxic plants, even predators (a smart crow could have scooped her away with ease)…

So, we would like to take this as a learning opportunity. While the photos may look beautiful, your hamster’s safety isn’t worth the risk! 🙏

Feels good to be back home! 🥰 I like to think that Zack was happy to see me lol.

Before I left, we had paired breeder hamsters Bobby Lu and Tara, but the pregnancy was unsuccessful. Luckily enough, Miss Tara went into heat again last night. We’re hoping round two works out! 🤞

One of our partners had taken in a lost lovebird that a concerned citizen discovered outdoors. The little baby is in recovery and is in the best care. 💕 If you are missing your bird, please reach out to us so we can help reunite your family!

Lastly, we have two male guinea pigs approximately 3 years old that are looking for a new family. We do not have the space to take these boys in, but if anyone is interested in fostering, please let us know.

Whoops—Roz here! I forgot to mention I’m out of province and won’t be back home until the 5th. 🤪 So sorry to everyone who reached out to us and didn’t hear back until today.

Braeden stayed home to care for the animals while I’m gone, and Bobby Lu is making sure everyone gets extra attention (and treats).

It’s World Snake Day today! 🐍 Since it’s his special day AND it’s the year of the snake, we’re going to use this opportunity to share some information about the oddball of our cray-zee crew: Arion the ball python!

Arion’s species recently became legal to own as pets in Saskatchewan a few years ago. They are called “ball” pythons because of their tendency to curl up when scared. We always tell people: he’s more scared of them than you should be of him! 😝

Most people flinch away after hearing he belongs to the python genus, which to him and his kin, is unfair. Additionally, ball pythons, unlike most snakes, are fairly docile, non-venomous, and picky eaters! Yes, you heard that right—this silly goofball literally has no interest in any of the other animals on our home.

If you have a snekky-boi that you’d like to share below, we would love to see them! 🥰👀 Help us spread the word that not all noodles are danger noodles!

It’s time we rip off the bandaid.

On May 26, our resident cockatiel Jett had a terrible accident. While flying around in our living room, like she had done every day, Jett suddenly veered off course into our glass screen door. She was only 5 years old.

Jett joined our cray-zee crew at approximately 3 months old. She had been Braeden’s companion, and Storm’s source of affection. She wasn’t the smartest bird or the snuggliest, but she was goofy and carefree. We still chuckle to ourselves, thinking she didn’t really know what she was doing in life, but she was doing, and that was good enough for her.

Rest in peace, you crazy girl. Fly free and as far as your heart desires. Until we meet again. 💔🌈

Zack and Chewy, the guinea pigs that have been up for adoption since 2022, haven’t had a single bit of interest. It’s been 3 years. They are now approximately 4-5 years old. 😞

It’s been a busy year at the hamstery and rescue. We’ve been trying to figure out how to register as a business and also as a rescue—and truthfully, we don’t know if it’s even possible.

Bobby Lu and our new breeder female (still to be officially announced!) are making things a bit difficult for us as well. We predicted we would have a new litter by the end of July or early August, but with how things are going, we’re not sure we can meet that deadline. 🥲

We have some heartbreaking news we are dreading to share also, and that has been eating away at us too. But we’ll get to that another day.

Some of you may already have heard about the tragic passing of Mikayla from Saveafox Corporation. While we didn’t have the opportunity to speak to her, it hits a vulnerable spot. 💔 Please, guys, be kind to everyone. Rest in peace, beautiful. You’re at peace with your babies now.

We’ll try to share another post tonight, to catch everyone up on things. To hopefully lighten up the mood a bit, here’s a picture of Zack enjoying his treat and snuggles so much that his eyes are starting to close. 🥹❤️

Bobby Lu is next in line to father a litter! 😍 We have a female we’re planning to pair him with that we’ll announce later.

It’s becoming more and more likely that Smee, Kronk, and Yzma are going to remain here as permanent residents. While they deserve to have a forever family where they could be spoiled rotten, they’ve settled into the routine of hamstery and rescue life. We’re worried that transitioning them might be stressful—aaand Braeden and Kronk have developed quite the bond anyway. ☺️

Iggy—now named Muffin—found his forever family back on the 7th! Congratulations, little one! 💕

Muffin’s family learned so much about hamster care prior to bringing him home. They originally reached out to us after buying a Habitrail enclosure off of Marketplace, but with gentle guidance, have upgraded to a large glass enclosure much more suitable for him and his many burrows. ❤️👏 Huge shoutout to them!

Muffin was the last of Luisa and Zeratu’s litter that was available for adoption. Bobby Lu, Scotty, and Sid the Kid will be staying with us indefinitely for various reasons, but we aren’t complaining. 🥰

Roz here. Stumbled across this post from PAWS & CLAWS Animal Rescue Inc. and felt sick to my stomach when I read the following comment.

There are too many people out there who don’t understand how much money rescues spend for the sake of any animals’ life. If anyone shares this mindset, I implore you to research how much money rescues actually gain from adoption fees. I can assure you: we don’t make money; we LOSE money.

Our Story

We are primarily a pet breeder based in Regina, Saskatchewan. Our focus currently goes towards breeding the M. auratus (Syrian) hamster species, and Procambarus crayfish species.

We also welcome a wide variety of tropical fish, other hamster species, and small birds if they need a new place to stay, or will help them find new homes if we are unable to meet their needs here.

Our goal is to introduce, guide, and educate others who share the passion we have for all living creatures. We are always happy to answer questions and give advice—and the resident pets never turn down an opportunity to make new friends!
