Know your breed! Before picking your new puppy see what fits your life and how you can fit your DOGS life! Not every dog is for every family! Do your research before picking. HEELERS are bearding dogs and we’re bred to nip at cattles heels… this is her instinct, they are nips not full on biting and doesn’t hurt. These types of breeds need a lot of physical activity and mental stimulation. IF YOU DON’T DO YOUR RESEARCH be prepared for a rough go!

Heartbreaking. Special shoutout to all the rescues out there saving dogs lives. And if you have a dog needing a little extra attention, please reach out to us before going to the extreme. All your dog needs is a little time.

This is the side of rescuing that people don’t see, and just don’t realise how hard it is for us behind the scenes.
Strap in guys, while I explain.

This is Marcus.

His owner contacted me to ask me to rehome him, because….
‘He barks at other dogs and people when out so needs rehoming ’

Marcus is a 2 year old patterdale x Labrador.

He had been owned by said owner for… 5 weeks.

He’s just settling in, learning his new environment and family, and at only 2 years old he will be rather overwhelmed as well as adjusting to everything new.

Barking is how dogs communicate, and express their fears, and also excitement.

When I asked his owner what training she had been doing with Marcus to help him overcome his possible nervous behaviour, the answer was ‘he’s had none’

I explained I am full at the moment but I will let her know when I had room to fit him in.

2.5 hours later I receive a call from a vet practice.

Marcus had been taken to the vets to be EUTHANISED.

Put to sleep.
To end his life, because his owner could not be bothered to put any time or training into him.

THANKFULLY, the vets refused and called us.
They spoke to their behaviourist while they were there, and offered the owner sessions to help Marcus- the owner declined.

Killing him was the easy way to end her problem.

So, of course, with fear the owner would then just go to another vet and put him to sleep- I made room.
I don’t have room, but I’m not having it.

Marcus has been with us less than half an hour.
He has sat, taken a treat very gently.
Has met 6 dogs- enjoyed a sniff and his tail hasn’t stopped wagging

He hasn’t barked yet.

Too many people are getting pets without any consideration to the time they need to adjust, and expecting them to be ‘perfect companions’ without actually putting anything into them.

Take some responsibility and invest the time into them, you chose them to be part of your family. Stop destroying them just because you cannot be bothered to help them.
It’s not their fault.

You are safe Marcus, and loved.
You will never be treated so badly again, and that I can promise.

So it’s been a few weeks since I got this and just wanted to share.

After receiving this I liked it so much I also grabbed a 6” matching lead from them as well.

To start off, no I am not sponsored by them.

A great thing about this is that it’s 1.5 inches and now people don’t call her a boy 50 times before I can correct them🤷🏼‍♂️. Also easier for others to associate that with her name on it

A big thing when we are working in and out of the public is that now when people see her with the collar, the colour and the name being on it I find they are more friendly about her doing her job.

But this was a gift and a great one at that!
I can’t say enough about this collar, she’s comfortable in it, it looks amazing, it’s strong and it has a place to grab on the collar as well. For some people that may not be a big thing but for us that is HUGE!

The grab collar will come in handy when she’s working chasing geese. She gets really excited before she goes and sometimes needs a little hold.

Best collar I’ve ever had for a dog yet. If you like this then you will love their stuff! Check them out! Alpine Dog Co.

So you’ve never seen geese in the winter eh? How about these ones that will terrorize your course come spring? prep

WHEN IS IT TOO COLD?

There’s never a “set” temperature but you need to understand common sense and your dog (breed). Do you have a short haired dog and how big? Is it a Doberman? Greyhound? Chihuahua? If so they need a coat and you need to limit time outside in cold weather and in extreme cold don’t even bother besides p*e break!

ALWAYS, think of your dog and their needs with extreme weather first! Today was -11 feels like -19 with the wind! My personal dog loves the cold and around the block was enough🚨

If you don’t think of your dog first in these times you could end up with a sick dog, huge vet bills and even worse. No one wants that for any dog, so be kind and think!

Don’t forget to comment, like and share🎄

Is there a proper way to play with you dog?
The east answer is No, there is no standard.

But there are many ways each dog needs an outlet for their energy. It doesn’t always consist of being physical either. If you have a high energy dog then you need to do more! MORE games, MORE mental stimulation and MORE play time to be genera about it.

All dogs are different but generally you can play more rough with your dog than you think. YOU know your dog better than anyone so don’t be afraid of getting out of your comfort zone and putting them outside of that box as well. This helps them be more confident and seeing new situations works not only their brain but also can build your bond to be stronger💪🏻

So get out there and try new things!🔥

Stay cool and keep your dog hydrated.

It’s going to be hot today which can be very dangerous for pets as it is difficult for them to cool their bodies in hot temperatures. Very young, old, and overweight dogs as well as breeds with short muzzles such as boxers, pugs, shih tzus are most at risk as they have much harder time breathing in extreme heat. It’s important to recognize the signs of distress or heat stroke which can include excessive panting or difficulty breathing, increased heart/respiratory rate, drooling, mild weakness and stupor.

On extremely warm days, asphalt, concrete and metal on sidewalks and streets can become very hot and can potentially burn delicate paws. The best way to protect your pet is to keep them in a cool space in the shade or leave them in air conditioning or in front of a fan at home. If you are headed out today, try going at dusk and dawn when it is the coolest, make sure to bring water and seek shade. More tips to keep your pets cool & safe: toronto.ca/dogsinthecity

What are the best dog treats or toys to keep your dog busy when crated?

If your dog loves chewing, gets distracted, or you need something to do for an hour these toys work wonders.

The top two best toys that work for most dogs are Kongs and bully sticks! Not to be confused with beef sticks or any other stick.

BULLY STICKS; They are expensive in Canada but I find work wonders for dogs that need to chew and be preoccupied while I’m their crate. They distract them from whining, barking and give them something to do.
WHY do I say don’t get confused with other sticks? Because bully sticks are tougher take longer for your dog to get through and simply don’t smell terrible and stink up your place.

KONGS; Kongs are great when used properly just like everything else. You can stick treats in them or some dogs just like to play and chew on them. I find the most effective way to mind your dogs time is to put wet food in your kong, freeze it overnight and then give it to them. It grabs their attention like peanut butter but also for strong chewers after it thaws a bit can get it out. The dogs that love it, love it! And it has their attention for 1 hr plus.

What is your go to attention grabber?

Do you let your dog play with other dogs?

If so, why?

Dogs don’t need other dogs to be happy in life, but we constantly seek to find them “friends” as we have. Most dogs have too many and make bad decisions because of it.

What needs to happen is limiting your dog to only a few select friends that are like minded dogs that get the same kind of training. The influence of other dogs long term is huge and if you keep yours around dogs that don’t have owners that care yours will eventually suffer and make your life very difficult! DON’T let your training go to waste!

Pick their friends wisely and other good dogs!

Would you let your kid hang out with bad influences? Then WHY do you let your dog?

Do you have the issue of your dog jumping on you or others?

There’s a number of reasons why and a number of ways how to solve it! That’s the good news. The bad news for most is it can take some time and consistency.

REMEMBER!🚨 A lot of people have the issue of their dog jumping on them or others when you get home from work or when you great them. This is not always a dog issue, most of the time this is the owners issue. You CAN NOT expect your dog that’s not trained to sit and be good when you give it baby talk and get them excited when you see them regardless of the time of day.

You need to ignore your dog. If they jump, then you should turn away from them, put them in a sit and wait until they calm down. If they don’t know sit then ignore them and go about your day until they settle down. Then greet them…

Energy!

Food is an important part of your dogs life. Are you feeding it the proper food to get what they need?

What is right for your dog? Raw? Mix? Organic? Kibble? Always consult your vet or go see someone for professional advice on this topic, but either way this is very important to you and your dog! Is your dog a working dog? Are they a couch potato? What do you use your dog for? Do they have stomach issues or allergies? All valid questions you may not know the answers too.

1. Do your research

Is your dog a high energy breed that needs more protein because they will burn it off? There are tons of companies out there to consider but in the end it is your choice what’s best for your pup! After all, you know your dog best.

What do you feed your dog?

Don’t chase, run!⁣

If you have issues will recall when your dog is off leash whether it’s in your backyard or in a secure gated park than the first step is don’t chase them run!⁣

What do I mean by that? I mean don’t chase your dog they will only run away from your further and you’re not out running your dog!⁣
Make sure they have your attention and run away from them. Dogs have a nature of enjoying chasing things and being playful, 90+ percent of the time they will chase you and come close enough to you that you can get them back on a leash or make them safe again. ⁣

Always keep your dog on leash unless you know it’s a safe place for them where they can’t get hurt or hurt and scare anyone else.⁣

05/31/2022

When training your dog, it is important to only say the command once. TWICE MAX. Saying it multiple times, will lose its meaning and your dog will no longer listen when you say your command. ⁣

If you get into the habit of only saying it once, this sets your dog up for success.

Dog not listening? Being difficult? Say it a second time in a strict tone of voice; one where they can understand and hear you. Make sure they are paying attention, BE CLEAR. ⁣

Still not listening? Go to your dog and make them physically perform the command. Show them what you want them to do!.

This will shape your dog's obedience and increase their listening.
