Fortunately, I have 2 careers where I don’t have to take in every dog that comes my way. I’m afforded a little bit of pickiness to take on the things I really enjoy…like PUPPIES!!!!
••
This little fella is Boston. He’s a 12 week old wee little pit that has had a bit of a tumultuous start. He’s a touch unsure but he’s got a great personality.
••
This puppy lesson was a bit of an information review where there were plenty of questions and scenarios for the adults to yammer on about. So while the adults adulted, Boston showed his little gaminess by selected a toy that he could really sink his little teeth into. No big surprise that he was in heaven and already showing candidacy for GRC.
••
He also made a new buddy in Lukin and found out that when the mafia boss ki barks, everyone listens.
••
He was a wee bit chilly at first but we makeshifted a wind breaker for him that did the trick and had the best saying “cats suck”.
😉
••
What a life he’s got in front of him living with people who’ll do anything for this little guy. Don’t worry - he’s got a big brother at home to teach him a few bad habits. 😁

I get a bit of grief because i tend to keep a bit of a hard ass “line” with the dogs. Meaning, I’m not afraid to tell them “no” when they’re either contemplating doing a dumb thing or, have gone through with a dumb thing. I believe it brings a lot of clarity and simplicity to the equation - saying no that is. And rest assured friends, there’s no relational detriment - the dogs greet me just as happily as they greet Michelle and they’re respectful. I can also assure you they’re rewarded with a ton of freedom.

I often think about the transformation of social media posts; specifically dog trainers social media. There was a time when everyone posted video after video of their feet in tandem with their dogs while in a heel position. Then it went to walk behind for reactive dogs Then retractables. Then all dogs off leash on some piece of land having a adventure.

Walking a small pack the other day I wondered….
Those dogs that are all adventuring, have they lost the ability to walk on a loose leash heel for the sake of freedom? Do they ever get practice ?
Has that idea of “tow the line dog” gone away ?

If you dropped your leash, will your dog do as Lukin did ? Not take off. Stay beside you. Calmly. Do you still have that “control” or better, that relational value and line in the sand of “this is good and that’s not”?

It’s the “can you stay home with us today?” look that gets me right in feels…every time. ♥️♥️

The blinder love is, the more it is instinctual, and the more it is attended by destructive consequences, for it is a dynamism that needs form and direction.

-C. G Jung, CW13, par. 391

“Form” or “structure” and “direction” aren’t dirty words. They’re the basis of a healthy relationships with people and contextually for this post, our dogs. Without them, the relationship is soon attended by destructive consequences.

“My dog is so sweet at home but on the walk she’s a ______”.

We would be wise to consider wether or not the sloppy “agape” love without expectations has hit us hard with consequences for the lack of structure, and direction.

This is to be read with heavy sarcasm and a punch of truth to the face…. So put your big girl and big boy pants on.

Well now that Canada Day and all the hoopla around protecting, no; bubble wrapping the dog against thundering fireworks has passed, here’s the next hurtle. Just plain old thunder showers that are very likely going to occur for the foreseeable future.

It is possible for the dog to:
1- take a s**t
2-kick some grass in that s**t and
3- engage in some play…all while it’s thundering.

We drew the line at hail but it is possible.

You either help to be brave or empower to be weak.

It’s the bane of my existence to love the dog into really s**ttt behaviours or worse, love them into weakness and dependency on you to the degree they cannot function. If you’re familiar with narcissism and children’s books - don’t be the devouring mother under the guise of animal welfare .

We’ve got a little bit of landscaping left to do, but we just couldn’t let that stop us from enjoying the 78* pool water last night.

This is all new for them. Aspen & Ki are really strong swimmers but this way of entering a pool is foreign to them. We’ve gone from an inground with steps to an above ground with a ramp. Much different feeling but they got the hang of it right quick.

Lukin took to it very quickly too. He’s had limited experience in entering a pool unless it was via a floaty. He too put his big boy pants on and got it done.

Annabelle who’s not in this video did well. She’s a bit unsure of her footing so until she’s more grounded, we’re using the leash to guide her through. She was the first in!

So much fun to be swimming with these lunatics again. And it really reminded me of how fortunate we are to have brave, outgoing always up for an adventure; even a seeming perilous one, kinda of
dogs They’re bravery is larger than their apprehension.

You know, swimming is super low impact, excellent exercise and fun to do for all ages of humans and dogs. Not to mention, it can really help a dog conquer all kinds of…nonsense that holds them back.

We had a great time…maybe not the hour it took to blow dry four dogs and have a conversation with ki and Lukin about not going after the rubber ducky but overall it was a good time for everyone.

Tell me without telling me, you understand your life style and have “socialized” your dog according to a high, medium and low priority list. I’ll go first.
••
For the sake of clicks, likes and followers, trainers have made it common practice to utilize cartoonish like info graphics to bring you clarity - a dos’ and donts’ list of things or, a “socialization is…” vs “socialization is not…”. Using different terms like “habituation, counter condition, desensitization”, the concept has been so divided into pied pieces of time you should spend doing tings by a percentage rating. And you better follow it otherwise you’re going to screw up your dog. It’s so passive aggressive it’s not remotely funny.

Look. It’s not super complicated. Think of your life right this minute. What are some of the activities you do on the regular, enough times that they matter, and those you rarely do.
Prioritize the things that occur all the time. Stick the things that don’t occur frequently at the bottom of the priority level.

I have a large yard and use heavy equipment on the regular. What do you imagine I worked on ? Meeting people? No. Being neutral or uncaring about the sights, sounds and smells of a diesel tractor, lawn tractor, whipper snipper and leaf blower. So when I renovate, no one is hiding in a corner.

Did I work on meeting people ? Of course. But it wasn’t on the highest priority list because I don’t entertain all that much.

So, if you have a life that involves constant company and you live in a sky scrapper ?
Socialization in the broad sense of the word would involve being neutral ar worst around people and vehicular traffic - including air brakes of heavy trucks like, a garbage truck. Those things would replace my things because of your lifestyles.

It’s not hard. Don’t complicate it more than it needs to be. Pick what’s most important and work the hell out of that. Move down the list from there.

Ex:
Heavy equip. Vet. Car. Crate. Swim - High priority
Other dogs & humans - Medium.
Shopping mall escalator - Low to zero

Most of all, have a fun socializing.

Uh-oh….I just posted a video and said “NO” to the dogs.
••
It’s crazy isn’t it ?
••
Could I have put in a difference cue ? Yep.
Could I have solicited an incompatible behaviour? Maybe.
Could I have been preemptive and better managed the situation ? Ok, sure.
••
But it’s also ok for me to say and them to hear “no (don’t go in the ditch water). And bigger news -

IT DIDN’T DIMINISH, STRAIN OR OBLITERATE THEIR MORALE OR OUR RELATIONSHIP.

No; was clear and it opened up everything else. Walking off leash. Sniffing. Running. Peeing on a tree. Pooping in the woods. Playing.

It was clear, not complicated. It was meaningful not mean.

For the life of me, I cannot understand how humans can hear the same word and be ok with it but say it to the dogs and you’re labeled horrible things.

Keep it up friends and PETA will have their wish. If an animal cannot be free to do what ever, we will not have them as pets.

Every dog problem every dog has ever had, has been caused by reinforcement.
••
Yep, the s**tty unwanted ones that drive you crazy, at some point, have been reinforced enough to be repeated.
••
And yes, even the innocent ones that you find cute - like a little excitement to head out on a sniffary.
••
No one is immune.

While speaking on another topic, this happened. So let’s go with it. Trigger warning.
••
Out”. You’ve heard it maybe 10000 times or more. Most people use “leave it”. Meaning leave that particular thing alone.
••
“Out” is typically used to convey “whatever is in your mouth specifically, you should give up to me”. Which is really, really useful for, say a puppy. Because there’s the whole wide world to explore and not all of it is friendly. Seeing as they tend to experience parts of the world by smelling, chewing and consuming, “out” is beneficial to the dog’s safety and overall health.
••
This my friends, is a prime example of “out”. More than leave that thing alone, it’s spit that s**t out and create space from it - literally.
••
Something irresistible about horse p**psicle. 🤢

My thoughts on an important topic.

Off leash in a public place. When is it ok?
When is it not ok?
Is it safe?
Is it not safe?
What about the rules? Bylaw? Infractions?
Should it be enforced?
••
I don’t have all the answers that will make everyone happy. But here’s a few things you can think about - is your dog off leash reliable ?
If so, under which criteria ?
••
If you answered “yes” but have no idea how reliable they are under a particular criteria (seeing other dogs or humans), you may want to think about unclipping at all or at least use a long line to keep your dog from inadvertent harm or inadvertently harming.
••
These guys are naked. There are no devices they’re wearing wether mechanical or electric, as a “just in case” , “safe than sorry”, “electric leash”.

Otto. 16 weeks. As clever as he is handsome. ••

Riley’s hangin with the gang again. Even without sound, he oozes happy day. Even got everyone else going 🙂
••
Everyone has their fav reinforcer as we do a bit of obedience maintenance after our 3k sniffary.
••
With this big debate going on about off leash dogs, the recent winter thaw; there’s plenty of new things that have been uncovered and competing for you dog’s attention.
So, before you get yourself or the dog in trouble, it’s a good time to make sure recall is up to s***f.

In a short time, I’ll be doing something under the bright lights, live time, to a big audience.
••
My time will be short but already the topics to cover are many. “How do stop this____?” and “what do I do when____?”
••
The time allotted isn’t sufficient to adequately cover these questions to the degree that I’m satisfied.
••
One thing is for sure - it rarely start’s with the stopping or starting a behaviour itself. Nope; it starts with you and the dog.
••
Who are YOU to the dog?
How valuable are YOU to the dog?
Where are YOU on the list of priorities, to the dog?
Did YOU teach the dog a language you both understand.
••
Inevitably, the latter questions are a big part of the answer to the former ones.
••
Look at the picture. All i did was go start my truck. My dogs...
”where’s he going ?”.
••
That’s right. Where am
I going? Their interest in me exceeds everything else in this moment. And not in a fomo, I can’t be without you toxic way. No; more in a matter of, “can we be part of what it is you’re doing?” kind of way.
••
A lot of behaviour questions can simply be answered by “do I have strong currency with my dog(s)?”
••

Wether white collar or blue collar, in all the industries I’ve been involved with, non even come close to the level of drama that exist’s in the dog training industry.
Cancel Culture City with it’s Extremist Avenues is riddled with sink holes. Say one thing that land’s a bit too far on “that side” of the line or on “this side” of the line and look out - you’re in for it.
••
For those of us that are reasonable, can agree to disagree in an amicable way, and are aligned on 99% of things, we’ve been encouraged to just .
••
The idea is raw, unedited clips training dogs.
••
While this is a sort of “calling out”, it’s also a “calling in” and “calling on” of those who are reasonable albeit have slightly different philosophies, to put out real time video without the rhetoric of methodology or the citation of a recent biased scientific study.
••
I think a few things will occur.
1- we’ll be seeing the elite push out more content
2- the imposter syndrome will grow larger than life and the aspiring super pro will clam up and not present video or present fluff.
3-a resurgence of delete and ban which has pros and cons to it.
4- the extremist will “become famous” by shifting their sights to the famous and “defaming” them. This one I can really see happening.
Defame to gain fame.
I mean that’s pretty much what Zak George did calling all balanced men trainers misogynists. 🙄. That’s an example of the extemism. Force free purely positive shaming balanced trainers. The irony is thick.
5- Nothing. As in, this attempt at deescalating the current situation does nothing and it’ll fade into obscurity, we’ll keep going as we are and get to a point where we say “this is how I train. You’re free to go elsewhere and I can even recommend a friend”.
••
So, while the dust is still settling, here’s a raw video of me feeding my dogs eggs off a plate with a fork.
••
Ki get’s extra points for not even getting his ass off the sofa like the others.
••

15/01/2023

Plowed a section of the yard so the dogs can run and we can get back to some training.
••
Lukin has so much fun and is so eager to get back to it. Ahhhh...to be young and responsibility
freeeeee lol.

“Love is at the foundation of relationships and all learning; love or the lack of it.” ~mr.rogers

Jay is a Professional Dog Trainer and Behaviour Consultant with Coyote Canine Training.

He believe’s that the foundation of relationships with dogs is very similar to those we share with spouses, family, friends, and co-workers. “In relationships we set up rules of engagement, boundaries that are non-negotiable and limits as to what is and isn't acceptable behaviour. We’re as kind as we can be, but as fair and firm as we need to be. We set these things up not only for ourselves but for benefit of others too. When everyone knows what’s expected of them; when everyone responds and respects those parameters, there’s very little drama. Its unambiguous, open and honest. It’s anchored in learning, mutual respect, and trust - love. Anything outside of those things isn't healthy. Its really no different with our dogs. My goal is to help people implement those same dynamics so they can experience the best relationship possible.” Jay offers dog obedience sessions in group format for all ages and size of dog. From puppy to adult, from Basic and Advanced Obedience to E-collar off leash reliability . Training sessions are also available in Private Sessions format. Behaviour Modification/Rehabilitation are available in Private & Boarding School. Group Lessons are held in Orleans. Private Lessons are held in his home training studio or dog owner's home.
