May is Arthritis Awareness Month

Osteoarthritis is a complex condition involving inflammation and degeneration of one or more joints. Pets can experience pain and inflammation in various joints that interfere with the activities of daily living.

Arthritis can present itself in many different ways in pets. Some of the signs include:
- Lameness
- Limping
- Stiff gait
- Decrease in activity levels
- Irritability
- Difficulty in getting up or down

If you think your pet may be suffering from arthritis please contact the clinic to schedule an appointment with our veterinarians. Arthritis management options will be discussed at that time and a plan can be developed to help your pet manage their pain levels

Pet First Aid is a very important skill set to have to be able to help your pet in the event of an emergency.

Prevention is the best medicine and while you cannot monitor your pets 24/7 or prevent accidents from happening to them, you can take steps to reduce the dangers and risks your pet faces every day. Becoming conscious of household items that could cause choking, injuries, sickness, or accidental poisoning to the animals is a great first step to being prepared to act in an emergency.

You can purchase a pet First Aid kit or make your own at home with items you would need in an emergency such as gauze, pet-specific bandages, cotton swabs, rubbing alcohol, thermometer, tweezers, etc.

If your pet has an emergency contact the clinic or your nearest veterinary emergency clinic immediately.

Lyme disease is caused by Borrelia burgdorferi and it is transmitted to dogs through the bite of an infected tick.

The most common type of tick to carry Lyme disease is the deer tick, also known as the black-legged tick. Deer ticks are distributed throughout Canada with the highest proportion in Ontario.

Many common symptoms of Lyme disease are:
- generalized pain
- decreased appetite
- limping
- fever
- swollen joints

The key to preventing your pet from developing Lyme disease is to limit their exposure to ticks. Ticks are commonly found in grassy, wooded, and sandy areas. Keeping animals from thick underbrush reduces their exposure to ticks. Dogs should be kept on trails when walking near wooded or tall grass areas.

There are options to help prevent Lyme disease; including vaccination and oral or topical prevention. Please contact the clinic to discuss the best options for your pets.

If you find a tick on your pet or suspect them of having Lyme disease please contact the clinic to schedule an examination with our veterinarians.

April is Heartworm Awareness Month ❤️

Heartworm disease is a serious and potentially fatal condition caused by parasitic worms, transmitted by mosquitos, that live in the heart, lungs, and blood vessels of pets.

The best way to protect your furry friends from heartworm is to do yearly testing and monthly prevention.

Please contact the clinic to schedule your pet for their yearly blood work and to pick up their prevention
