My first foray in the world of canaries. Now have 4 pairs of Fife's, two hens are already with eggs. I put each pair into the empty hookbill flights for the summer and will house them in smaller cages in the fall. They seem to enjoy the space.

Shaft-tail Finches. Also called Heck's and Long-tailed Grass Finch
(Peophila acuticauda). They are very inquisitive peaceful bird and are extremely fast flyers. In the 40' outdoor flight it is amazing to watch their flight maneuvers.

Who's on eggs as of today:
Two pairs of cockatiels.
Two pairs of lovebirds.
One pair of Linnies
One pair of Rosy Bourkes
One canary hen has two eggs.
All the rest are procrastinating.

Rosy Bourkes..added 3 males and one female to the four females I currently have. Once they get adjusted to their new environment, hopefully a successful breeding season will follow.

Spring is finally here, the outdoor flight are finished, a few days off of work and the hookbills are all outside. The Fischer lovebirds have already investigated the nest boxes. One of the male Cockatiels "drums" his beak on the nest boxes in various locations, a behavior I have not seen before.

Almost finished with the aviary remodeling. Added 3 more flights and divided the 640 sq.ft. finch flight into 4 separate flights. I use poly wrap on the outside to reduce drafts and cold spring winds. Hookbills will go outside early next week. Finches will go outside last weekend in April, weather permitting.

Last of the winter breeding - Gouldian pair has 3 chicks almost ready to fledge. I've taken down most of the remaining nest boxes to discourage any more nesting as there are about 5 weeks till the finches go back to the outdoor aviary,
