🐛🐛We need to rethink how we think about testing for and treating parasites in horses. 🤔
After some cases that have surprised me over the last year, I have become acutely aware that deworming is no longer just about choosing anthelmintics (dewormers) wisely and checking fecal counts yearly.
We have had multiple cases that have demonstrated our dewormers are not working as well as we had always relied on them to do, and this is leading to more prevalent issues from parasite loads.
This years AAEP Internal Parasite Control Guidelines have been significantly updated from previous recommendations according to the data and challenges we are facing.
After a deeper dive into how we should manage parasite loads now, in an effort to update our recommendations, the most interesting takeaway I had was that we need to be testing whether our chosen anthelmintics (dewormers) are actually working or not. 😐
In multiple cases now, they are not performing as expected.
Want to discuss how we can be more effective in parasite management? Don’t hesitate to reach out!
📢We don’t need a special occasion to talk about our amazing team but we couldn’t let Veterinary Assistant Appreciation Week pass without giving a special shout out to our very own Veterinary Assistant, Caleigh Walsh👏🎉
Caleigh shows up each and every day with a huge smile on her face. Her compassion, skill and unwavering commitment have made her an invaluable addition to the team since she joined Inglemere - both to myself, and Millie!
Thank you for all that you do, Caleigh! ❤️
