Here it is! Our long-awaited building update! Part of why it took so long to get an update out was because we were waiting for good news to share... and with some VERY positive updates to focus on, it is finally time to loop you in on where we have been, where we are at, and what comes next!
Please note.
We will not be naming the company, please don't ask and refrain from speculating (or naming them yourselves) in the comment section.
We are looking FORWARD and would appreciate the conversation staying focused on how we, as a community, can make that happen.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: SIMCOE AND DISTRICT HUMANE SOCIETY SEES LIGHT AT THE END OF THE TUNNEL
Simcoe and District Humane Society can finally see the light at the end of tunnel when it comes to finally having a proper building to carry on their work with the animals in Norfolk County and surrounding areas.
Back in 2019, ground was broken and hopes were high that there would soon be a brand new building erected on the property, one where there was space for the animals coming into care, proper kennels for dogs, indoor plumbing, and space for volunteers and staff to do their tasks without bumping into each other or the kennels crammed into the trailers located at 24 Grigg Drive in Simcoe.
Things did not go as planned however, and work on the building came to a halt in 2020, with many issues becoming apparent with the work done to that point despite the three hundred thousand dollar cost.
With the funds donated and raised for the building depleted, and with a sharp decline in donations over and after COVID, the Humane Society was left to carry on best they could, while seeing the reminder up on the hill behind the cramped trailers every time they went outside to use the portapotty, or to get supplies from one of the many seacans and sheds on the property.
Enter Dave Bates of BHI Bates Home Improvement, who sits on the Board and is now the Director of Building and Maintenance. Using the little bit left
We are starting September very shorthanded due to the Summer Jobs program ending and losing the students who have helped keep things running this summer.
In order to continue to serve the area and the animals, there is a huge need for volunteers to step up and help fill in some gaps in the following areas, with shifts ranging from days to evenings, 7 days a week:
OFFICE HELP: answer phones, accept donations, assist clients, handle adoption paperwork.
KENNEL ATTENDANTS: cleaning kennels, feeding, and other animal care. Does involve some heavy lifting and the ability to kneel, lift, and bend.
There is also a need for more hands to help out at events and fundraisers.
There will be a Vounteer Orientation and Training happening 11 am-3 pm Tuesday September 3rd to Thursday September 5th, with the orientation on Tuesday and training on Wednesday and Thursday.
If you have some time to spare to help the animals, please fill out the form online and show up for the above-mentioned sessions. DO NOT wait for a call, as the shelter team is busy with day-to-day operations, please just show up ready to help us help the animals.

Usually, our puppies and dogs find their way into care, they are there for a few short days while they prepare for adoption, (vaccinations, dewormer, flea treatment, microchip, spayed/neutered) and they then find their furrever homes.
We are seeing a trend, as other shelters are, these dogs have been in our care longer than normal. Calleena. a beautiful Azores Cattle Dog / White Shepherd mix has been in care since December 8, 2023.
We need to find these pups, and dogs their purrfect home.
Beaurgard and Brother are at the shelter waiting to be swept off their paws and get going to their new family.
HappyAmaretto is also at the shelter, she has been vaccinated to date, microchipped, flea treated, heartworm meds on board, spayed and a little lump removed and sent away.
Please open your heart and home to a wonderful dog or puppy in the care of #SimcoeDHumane

We need YOUR help to help us, help them!
The intakes and the vet bills are piling up, so we need our donations to do the same!
Every little bit helps! If all of our followers donated just $1, that would add up to $4700!
If HALF our followers donated $5, that would be $11,750!
