We will save you the shock of seeing this poor kitty's eye in your newsfeed, but trust us when we say it's gruesome! If you REALLY want to see for yourself, we will put it in the comments...so don't check the comments if you're squeamish!

Despite being closed and most of our team down with COVID we are still doing what we can to help the animals, and 6 week old Doris has been checked over and will require an enucleation (eye removal) as well as other medical care (and costs!)

Please donate to her care by etransferring to [email protected]

A reminder that we are NOT open to the public today.
We are regularly closed on Sundays, and we will be closed Monday for the holiday.

But join us for Volunteer Orientation and Training on Tuesday/Wednesday/Thursday 11-3!

Several of our team are out sick, and out of an abundance of caution and the need to keep those who are able to come in to care for the animals healthy, the shelter will be CLOSED to the public until after the long weekend.
Thank you for your understanding.

We will be starting September very shorthanded due to the Summer Jobs program ending and losing the students who have helped keep things running this summer.

In order to continue to serve the area and the animals, there is a huge need for volunteers to step up and help fill in some gaps in the following areas, with shifts ranging from days to evenings, 7 days a week:

OFFICE HELP: answer phones, accept donations, assist clients, handle adoption paperwork.

KENNEL ATTENDANTS: cleaning kennels, feeding, and other animal care. Does involve some heavy lifting and the ability to kneel, lift, and bend.

There is also a need for more hands to help out at events and fundraisers.

There will be a Vounteer Orientation and Training happening 11 am-3 pm Tuesday September 3rd to Thursday September 5th, with the orientation on Tuesday and training on Wednesday and Thursday.

If you have some time to spare to help the animals, please fill out the form online and show up for the above-mentioned sessions. DO NOT wait for a call, as the shelter team is busy with day-to-day operations, please just show up ready to help us help the animals.

Here it is! Our long-awaited building update! Part of why it took so long to get an update out was because we were waiting for good news to share... and with some VERY positive updates to focus on, it is finally time to loop you in on where we have been, where we are at, and what comes next!

Please note.
We will not be naming the company, please don't ask and refrain from speculating (or naming them yourselves) in the comment section.
We are looking FORWARD and would appreciate the conversation staying focused on how we, as a community, can make that happen.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: SIMCOE AND DISTRICT HUMANE SOCIETY SEES LIGHT AT THE END OF THE TUNNEL

Simcoe and District Humane Society can finally see the light at the end of tunnel when it comes to finally having a proper building to carry on their work with the animals in Norfolk County and surrounding areas.

Back in 2019, ground was broken and hopes were high that there would soon be a brand new building erected on the property, one where there was space for the animals coming into care, proper kennels for dogs, indoor plumbing, and space for volunteers and staff to do their tasks without bumping into each other or the kennels crammed into the trailers located at 24 Grigg Drive in Simcoe.

Things did not go as planned however, and work on the building came to a halt in 2020, with many issues becoming apparent with the work done to that point despite the three hundred thousand dollar cost.

With the funds donated and raised for the building depleted, and with a sharp decline in donations over and after COVID, the Humane Society was left to carry on best they could, while seeing the reminder up on the hill behind the cramped trailers every time they went outside to use the portapotty, or to get supplies from one of the many seacans and sheds on the property.

Enter Dave Bates of BHI Bates Home Improvement, who sits on the Board and is now the Director of Building and Maintenance. Using the little bit left in the building fund, and a generous donation of siding from Toyotetsu Canada Inc (TTCA), he set to work righting some wrongs and getting the outside of the building to the point it could pass the inspections needed to move on to the inside work. He currently has well over 400 hours of donated time into this project – which is now ready to move on to the next stages.

With no funds left in the account, the Simcoe and District Humane Society is appealing to local contractors and businesses, in the hopes of receiving support in the form of donated materials and the licensed labour needed to get the inside of the building finished.

The cost to finish the long-awaited building is approximately three hundred thousand dollars, and while there are several fundraisers in the work, the new goal is to have the building completed before the end of 2024, and while the light is visible at the end of the tunnel, it’s still off in the distance.

The need for a larger, fully functional animal shelter in our community has grown exponentially, with many having to surrender their pets, or relying on the Pet Food Bank program, as well as finding it difficult to afford veterinary care such as spaying and neutering their pets, which in turn leads to even more animals needing help.

Donations of money or materials over $20 are eligible for tax receipts.

Labour is unfortunately not eligible for tax receipts, but is essential to being able to finish building the home for the animals and the volunteers who work tirelessly to help them.

Financial donations can be made via the PayPal link on the website at simcoedhumane.ca, by etransferring [email protected], over the phone with a credit card, in person during office hours, at our events, and by mail via cheque.

If your business is able to assist with the work needing to be done on the inside, please contact Dave Bates at 519-429-1518.

WE NEED HELP!

We have to level off our property ASAP as per the county, so we need:

1) a business or person(s) to help us move sheds, seacans, and our shelter trailers from the lower areas, up to the built up area the building is on. This is quite the endeavor, but one that must be done.

2) clean fill to build up the areas seen in the images below.

If you're able to help us, please contact Dave at 519-429-1518 to discuss a plan!

A BIG thank you to MobileMend Brant & Norfolk Phone Tablet & Computer Services for dropping by with a $100 donation to help the animals!

Morgan recently celebrated her birthday by asking their followers to comment their fave local businesses, and each comment counted as $1 she put towards a donation to support the shelter.

Isn't she just the sweetest?!?

Usually, our puppies and dogs find their way into care, they are there for a few short days while they prepare for adoption, (vaccinations, dewormer, flea treatment, microchip, spayed/neutered) and they then find their furrever homes.

We are seeing a trend, as other shelters are, these dogs have been in our care longer than normal. Calleena. a beautiful Azores Cattle Dog / White Shepherd mix has been in care since December 8, 2023.

We need to find these pups, and dogs their purrfect home.

Beaurgard and Brother are at the shelter waiting to be swept off their paws and get going to their new family.

HappyAmaretto is also at the shelter, she has been vaccinated to date, microchipped, flea treated, heartworm meds on board, spayed and a little lump removed and sent away.

Please open your heart and home to a wonderful dog or puppy in the care of

Happy National Dog Day!

This year we have seen an influx of dogs coming into care, and they need homes!

Caleena has been in foster most of her life.

Jack was recently surrendered and needs to be in a Foster2Adopt or furever home, is currently waiting in a kennel for someone to get him out.

Sweet senior Cali is also more than ready for her next chapter!

And we have puppies who need homes too!

Visit simcoedhumane.ca to see adoptable pets!
You can also come see them during our office hours of 11-3, closed Wednesdays and Sundays!

And as always... donations help us help the animals:

MegaBumblebee and Megatron were dropped off on our porch, just out of range of our cameras....

This means that we have zero information on the cats, on their owner, or the situation/reason for surrender.... So we are starting from scratch with 2 adult cats whose medical and previous vetting history is unknown.

Everything cost money and this year, money is at an all-time low. We need to care for the animals, finally finish our building (watch for an update on that coming soon), and clearly - we need more cameras so we know when animals are dumped on our property so we can make sure they're okay.

Meet Marsh and Marshmallow...only 3.5 weeks old, but are very small for their age.

They have been to the vets and both have badly infected tails, upper respiratory infection, eye infections, and need medical treatment for the next few weeks.

They are currently with a foster, and it will be awhile before they are ready for adoption, but in the meantime.... we need help with the costs of their medical care!
