We are currently looking for Stick Horses to use at the West Niagara Fair!

They can be well loved.
Would prefer if they had a name.
Don’t have to be completely sound .
Servicable sound is good enough.
Must have a sense of humour and try hard for inexperienced riders .

Please send me a message or you drop at the fair office.

Thank you 😊

I would say it’s safe to say that the idea of a Showcase of local horses came up about 8 years ago.
Jackie VandenBrink and myself, had many conversations about how frustrating it was to sell our own bred horses.
How time consuming it is, never mind disheartening when people come to look at your horses for sale.
We both had very different ideas on what we wanted to breed and like in horses, but we agree that a good horse is a good horse.

So here we are …..
We could not be the only ones with this problem?
It is a bit of a Niagara problem. We are just out of the main travels of horse shoppers.
It’s very difficult to bring your youngsters to the horse show. It takes a lot of manpower to get it all together.

So here we are.
Let’s organize something local that is open to everyone to show and school their horses.
Somewhere every horse breed , age and size can participate in a competition.
Let’s make it attractive to get these young and up and coming horses out , to show them off in a safe and welcoming environment.

Do you have an older horse that you would like to school? That’s okay.
Do you have a student that needs to work through some things.
Bring them over.
Do you want to participate in a fun and kinda different show format?
Please come join us!

Our goal is to promote our local horse people and horses and we are very happy you chose to be part of this event.

Guidelines for presenting a horse in hand

Gloves and helmet by competition standards must be worn

Purpose
The overall purpose of the in-hand discipline is to present the horse in a way that makes the horse look and act in the best possible way both standing still and moving. The horse will be shown in a bridle (ideally with a snaffle bit) and reins (ideally which are not bulky but slender and easy to hold in the hand).
Young horses can be presented in a leather halter and lead .The handler must behave discreetly in order to let the attention be concentrated on the horse.
A horse will be presented to the judges on the triangle. The longest side of the triangle must be 35-40m between D and A. The distance between B and C is recommended to be 20-25m.
Each participant will be allowed the assistance of a ‘whip handler’ using a lunge whip. The function of the whip handler is to discreetly keep the horse going forward at all times but at the same time not to interfere as to upset the rhythm and balance of the horse Competitors may instead carry a training whip that is held in the left hand instead of an assistant whip handler
Please be aware that unnecessary punishment of the horse may lead to disqualification of the discipline.
Throughout the presentation control over the reins/ lead is important whilst demonstrating elegance in holding the reins. Safety is paramount.

Stage 1. At the signal of the judge the competitor will enter at A and walk in a straight line to B towards the judge.
Stage 2. On reaching the judge at B the competitor will present the horse in front of the judge at a halt at an open stance with the left side of the horse nearest to the judge. Horse should stand as still as possible.

In front of judge the competitor will step to the front of the horse at approximately one arm’s length.
When positioned the competitor will answer questions as presented.

Stage 3. At signal of the judge the competitor will walk to C and return back to B .
Stage 4. On reaching B you will turn right and trot towards D , turning right and displaying extended trot towards A and turning right back to the judge at B.
On reaching B you are to transition to the walk and proceed to E returning to present the horse to the judge at B.
Stage 5. Present horse in open stance .
When excused, you may leave the triangle and line up .
