This week’s Meet the Staff Monday is all about Amélie! 😻

You’ve probably been met with Amélie’s lovely smile if you like to stop by the clinic on Saturdays. She is one of our hard-working weekend gals, and we are so grateful for her! Amélie is very passionate about animals; she currently studies at the University of Manitoba, pursuing her dream of becoming a veterinarian. She enjoys learning new things about animal health, which makes her a perfect fit at Pet Vet!

Amélie is from Winnipeg and is of French and Italian descent. Outside of work, she enjoys spending time at the lake, hanging out with friends and family, cooking or baking, and travelling! She shares her home with her pets Farrah, the quirky yet intelligent German Shepherd cross, and Zola, the fun-loving but independent and sassy cat.

We appreciate all of Amélie's efforts and love watching her pursue her dream! 💗

☠ ALLAN ☠

Was in to see Dr. Bargen to have his eyes and mouth examined! He doesn't love being handled at the vet, and he was obviously struggling at his initial appointment, so a plan was devised for him to come back with some "chill" medications on board.

We are so grateful for compliant owners like Allan's mom who understand the importance of keeping their pets comfortable and our staff safe. Allan was successfully examined on his second go around, and even brought Dr. Bargen a special treat after his appointment. Thank you, Allan & Family! 💛

🤠 BANDIT 🤠

The outlaw was at large after eating 5 big bites of his mom's delicious chicken siracha sandwich. He was captured and brought in to the vet following this offence, as the repercussions of his crime involved vomiting all over Mom's house. Dr. Bargen concluded that Bandit was dealing with gastroenteritis, a short-term illness triggered by inflammation and/or infection of the digestive system. Her treatment plan included an anti-nausea injection, a recommended weight-loss diet, and no more hot sauce! 🔥

😴 Lazy Daisy 😴

has been featured on our page before—we just can't get enough of her goofy personality! Daisy stayed with us for the day for her ovariohysterectomy (spay) surgery. By the time Mom and Dad came to pick her up, she was still feeling sooo sleepy and couldn't fathom the thought of getting up on those four legs.

Have no fear; Superdad is here! 🦸‍♂️ Daisy got the princess treatment, carried out to her carriage like the royalty she is. 👑

E.T. phone home 👽 🚲

This little babe is a newborn French Bulldog that was just delivered by cesarean section! After lots of attention to ensure baby had a clear airway, she was wrapped up resembling a well-known extraterrestrial.

Ponyo, Ponyo, Ponyo, little fishy in the sea 🌊🐠

Except Ponyo didn't just emerge from the sea; she had a dental procedure! Little Ponyo had some bad teeth that needed to be extracted to keep her mouth comfortable. Now her pawrents can rest assured she has a healthy, pain-free mouth with the bad teeth removed.

Oftentimes, pets can look a bit "haggard" following their dental procedure, as throughout the cleaning and polishing process lots of splashback can be involved. We try to make dental patients look somewhat presentable before going home to mom and dad, but we are no groomer! Arguably in Ponyo's case, this post-dental look just added to her overall cuteness.

Another week of Meet the Staff Monday! This time, Annique is in the spotlight. 🌟

Annique grew up in Howden, Manitoba, graduating with honours as a registered veterinary technician in 2009. She gained a wealth of knowledge practicing as a technician for years and as a practice manager for several more. Since coming to Pet Vet, she has brightened the atmosphere by enforcing excellent work culture, team morale, safety precautions, organization of workflow, and so much more! She makes juggling the many tasks that come with managing a veterinary practice look effortless, but we know her job is far from it.

Annique's bubbly personality invites staff and clients to feel welcomed, and her firm determination allows for positive change to be quickly applied to the patient care process. It is well known around the clinic that Annique is an absolute Frenchie fanatic; her favourite aspect of veterinary medicine being any visits that involve French Bulldogs. Outside of work, she enjoys a good book with a cup of Earl Grey tea.

Annique shares her home with her 7-year-old French Bulldog, Coco Chanel, who is particularly fond of sleeping. Also in the home are her three cats: Pickles the opinionated torti, Prince Reuben the orange peel hater, and Poppy the barn cat (whose one-time sleepover has turned into a 3-year stay). The fun doesn't end there, as her family includes two horses named Teddy and Puzzle. Teddy is a 6-year-old goofy warmblood, and Puzzle is a 7-year-old kid-friendly and bath-loving paint mare.

In between important meetings and phone calls, Annique never hesitates to put her technician hat back on, whether it's to assist with surgeries or collect blood from a patient. We are SO grateful to have Annique at Pet Vet!

🍼BABY🍼

Is a beautiful Domestic Mediumhair whose curiosity brought about a fun adventure! Baby's found herself in one of our appointment room cupboards, studying its contents. She found the treat bags with ease, but more interestingly, a knee joint model worth all the sniffs! Besides investigating the exam room, Baby's visit included having her vaccines updated by Dr. Bargen and an overall health exam.

😄GATSBY😄

Was all smiles for his vaccine appointment with Dr. Stewart. This cute Corgi is typically a little nervous when visiting the vet, so we took things slow and made our peace offering in the form of liver treats. He gladly took this offer and warmed up to the team quickly- not even noticing his vaccines! We were very happy to help Gatsby have a positive experience at the vet, and we look forward to future negotiations. 🦴

🍊TED🍊

Was the best patient for his ear exam, clean, and flush with Dr. Stewart and her team! He sat so patiently and seemed to find relief every time we cleaned a little more debris from his ears.

Ted previously had ear mites, so a sample was collected from his ear and looked at under the microscope to confirm whether or not he was ear mite positive this time around. Luckily, he was free of the microscopic parasite, but a roaring overgrowth of yeast was found causing the problem. Ear mite infestation and bacterial or fungal ear infections can look very similar, where Ted's symptoms included excessive scratching, dark debris, and odour coming from the ears. Without this important physical exam and ear swab, his yeast infection could have gone untreated.

We love using diagnostic tools to confirm the appropriate treatment plan for each medical case, like we used the microscope for Ted's ear issue!🔬 Sometimes history repeats itself, but in Ted's case it did not.

Thanks for coming in, Ted! It was a pleasure. 🧡

When she’s cute ☺️ and quirky 🤪

Effie is a BIG personality in a tiny body! She sees meowing as too mainstream, so she chooses to let out little ‘roars’ instead. She’s a silly girl and also a staff pet, so we get the pleasure of hanging out with this little lady when she comes to work for appointments! (Because what staff pet doesn’t require numerous appointments per year 😂)

This week's Meet the Staff Monday features... Dr. Leanne Bargen! 👩‍⚕️

Dr. Bargen is known and loved by many, serving Steinbach's pet and pet-parent community since graduating from the Western College of Veterinary Medicine in 2004. After graduating, she brought with to Pet Vet her hospitable and easy-going nature, where she's always willing to lend a helping hand and go the extra mile. She is very knowledgeable and a student's dream, as she curates an environment where learning is fostered.

Dr. Bargen enjoys all types of activities; she's even played Ringette for 44 years! In the summer, she can be found on her dock with a book or out on the water on a stand-up paddle board. Professor Sprout and Padfoot are her two rescue kitties, who were found at the dump and in a parking lot. She also has a cute little terrier named Pip to make up her furbaby trio.

Dr. Bargen's professional interests include dentistry and medical cases. She also loves the personal aspect of seeing her client's kids come back to Pet Vet all grown up with their own pets and kids! 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦🐾

🤍WILLIE🤎

Will make anyone a bulldog lover! This handsome boy visited us for a dental procedure called an epulis removal, which is a mass arising from the gingival tissue in the mouth. It’s not certain what causes these oral masses to arise, but environmental and genetic factors cause predisposition in some dogs. The best course of action is to have these masses surgically removed, since if left untreated, they may invade surrounding tissue causing further dental issues and pain.

Willie’s dental problem was found during a routine vaccine appointment with Dr. Bargen- a great example of why annual check-ups are so important!

Also, we could not get over Willie's stinkin' cute underbite if you couldn’t tell. 😆

Kicking off our Meet the Staff Monday campaign is... Dr. Michael Rebizant! 👨‍⚕️

Michael began as a volunteer at Pet Vet many years ago, where he quickly became a member of our team. He worked hard at the clinic in between studying to become a veterinarian at the Western College of Veterinary Medicine, and we are so excited to announce that he's now a full-time doctor on the Pet Vet team!

Dr. Rebizant belongs to the graduating class of 2024, and has already proven to be a wonderful addition to the present team of veterinarians. It's obvious he cares deeply for each case that comes his way, as he's become known for his incredible note-taking and keen attention to detail. His friendly and calm demeanour allow pets to feel relaxed during appointments, and clients to feel included in the discussion of their pet's health.

Dr. Rebizant's favourite aspects of the job are wellness and preventative medicine, pathology, and surgery! Outside of work, his special interests include sneakers, watches, and games. ⌚

Many of you have likely met Michael during his time as a student, but for those who haven't, help us in giving a very warm welcome to Dr. Rebizant! 🎉

😈LUCIFER😈

Is a gorgeous Maine C**n, the largest domesticated cat breed in the world! Despite his name, he was a gentle giant for his check-up with Dr. Legaspi.

Did you know that Maine C**ns can be up to 8 kg (17.6 lbs) heavier than the average domestic cat? Their distinct facial expressions combined with their sheer size make for an absolutely show-stopping kitty! Lucifer is definitely no exception. Those ears! 😍

Was super excited when her dad brought her to work…until she realized she was going to be his patient!

Sheena belongs to one of our veterinarians, Dr. Capao. She was due for her dental cleaning, but before he could begin, she insisted on meeting whichever team members she could reach. 💓

Dental care is so important for your pet. Did you know that untreated dental disease can lead to serious life-threatening conditions? Their heart, liver and kidneys can be seriously affected by infection originating in the mouth. All pets should have annual dental exams to screen for signs of periodontal disease, even the vet’s pets!

We have exciting news to share! 🥳

One of Pet Vet's very own pre-veterinary students, Asia, was accepted into the Western College of Veterinary Medicine! When we heard the news, we were absolutely elated as well as super impressed, since she was accepted into this very competitive program on her first try. We have come to learn that she is extremely intelligent, so it sure isn't surprising! 🧠

Asia worked hard on the weekends at the clinic to provide a wonderful experience for clients and their pets, while taking her studies seriously by attending university full-time throughout the week. Pet Vet was her first exposure to veterinary medicine, and we are delighted to have provided her with this initial stepping stone in her career. Asia began as a volunteer, but quickly became an official member of the team where she remained for 3 years.

Asia, we are so very proud of the woman we have come to know and love. We thank you for your constant efforts over the years. Your passion for this industry is obvious. The Pet Vet team is cheering you on every step of the way, and we just know you will make an amazing doctor!

"Thank you to all the doctors, vet techs, and receptionists for being so lovely and never being afraid to answer my never-ending questions. I want to thank Pet Vet, and especially Dr. Bargen, for helping me grow my passion in this field. I could not be more grateful." -Asia
