Can you spot this sewing needle in the xrays of this cat? A stomach surgery was required to take it out. Thankfully the owners were able to bring this patient is within ten minutes. The longer the needle is in, more damage it can do by migrating through the stomach to other organs causing leakage and trauma and often is fatal if not taken out.

Another Foreign Object Stomach & Intestine Twin Surgery at SKVH

This young large breed dog came in for vomiting and GI issues. Bloodwork was normal, xrays showed a circular object in stomach. When the surgery was done, we found another surprise ball in the intestine.

New Caution: Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza in Dog (HPAI)

In late March 2023, the HPAI virus was found in a dog in Durham Region after it scavenged on a dead goose that also tested positive for the virus. It is still unclear whether the virus played a role in the dog's death. Dogs and cat are susceptible to HPAI after having direct contact with wildlife or consuming infected meat; however, there have been no reported cases of transmission from mammalian pets to humans. The signs of canine influenza infection include coughing, sneezing, nasal and ocular discharge, decreased appetite, and fever. Veterinary diagnostic laboratories can test for influenza in pets. Owners are encouraged to avoid direct and indirect contact with wildlife and prevent their dogs from having contact with animals and people infected with influenza.

The highly pathogenic Asian Strain of H5N1 avian influenza currently found in Asia, Africa and Europe can infect multiple species of domestic (chickens, turkeys, quails, guinea fowl, etc.) wild and pet birds. This virus has also been detected in mammalian species including humans, rats and mice, wea...

This rubber object was removed from the stomach of one of our canine patients with surgery called Exploratory Laparotomy which means the surgeon goes in to explore the GI system to see where the problem is. Sometimes even contrast xrays are not enough to identify foreign objects that the pet may have eaten. Our vets have been doing these surgeries for a decade.

A pet came in with an issue of vomiting for 1-2 days. After bloodwork and contrast xrays (not normal xrays), we were able to see an obstruction in the stomach. A surgery was performed to get this object out of the stomach. Such surgeries are commonly performed at SKVH. Since vomiting can be caused by many different things like toxicity, internal organ dysfunction, neurological issues, immune system issues and others, multiple diagnostics are often needed to rule in or rule out the causes.

Basic Info: A**l Glands in dogs

A**l gland issues are a common problem in dogs that can cause discomfort and irritation. A**l glands are small sacs located on either side of a dog's a**s that produce a smelly, oily liquid that helps dogs mark their territory and communicate with other dogs.

Sometimes, these a**l glands can become impacted or infected, causing discomfort, pain, and even infection. Signs of an a**l gland issue in dogs may include excessive licking or biting of the area around the a**s, scooting or dragging the rear end on the ground, or a foul smell coming from the rear end.

If your dog is experiencing a**l gland issues, it is important to take them to a veterinarian who can empty the impacted glands and recommend a course of treatment, which may include antibiotics if the glands are infected.

Regularly expressing your dog's a**l glands can help prevent future issues. Additionally, feeding your dog a high-fiber diet and ensuring they get enough exercise can also help prevent a**l gland issues.
