Congratulations to these wonderful dogs and owners that graduated from our Reactive class. It’s tough work and can be emotionally draining owning a reactive dog at times. All 4 of these owners did amazing working on every aspect of their dog’s reactivity.

So true! Good to remember when your are trying to make a positive bond with your puppy. Humans find this frustrating but the puppy thinks it’s FUN! Trading any “toy” with a treat is your best course of action. Save those favorite/high value treats for scenarios just like this!!

Meet your dog where they are at and accept who they are! Genetics plays an important role in our dogs lives; the Gaurdians will always guard to some degree, The Herders will want to herd, Sighthounds & Scenthounds will have a tendency to have high prey drive and be more independent thinkers (which some may wrongly refer to as stubborn). Working with your dog instead of against your dog is a win-win.

A news clip in regards to a dog attacking an older man popped into my feed today. It appears the man was simply trying to get 2 dogs to go back into his neighbour's yard where the dogs live and a 3rd dog jumped out of an open window grabbing the mans bicep, biting, puncturing and tearing skin. A picture of the incident showed a Bully breed.

I scrolled through the comments and the first one was “oh, shocking, another Pit Bull attacking someone”. which I read all too often in news feeds. I could not comment or post to educate because the moderator of the group closed comments.

I am not arguing that Pitbulls (statistics hold a variety of mixed Bully breeds in here) unfortunately are at the top of the bite list followed by the Rottweiler, German Shepard and Doberman.

I do believe a HUGE percentage of dog bites are preventable!!

It is a misinformed statement to say that Pitbulls are aggressive, did you know that the American Pit Bull Terrier’s typically pass a temperament rating test with at least 87%? Chihuahuas and Schnauzer’s are among those with the lowest rating.

So then WHY do they hold the majority of bites/attacks? This is where the public needs to be informed before getting a dog! You typically wouldn’t go buy a horse without doing some research and getting informed so why are people continually getting dogs they do not understand?

Do NOT get a bully breed simply because you feel bad for them because they have a bad rap - get educated on the Breed!!!

Every dog has a built in genetically disposed predatory sequence Which is - stalk; chase; grab/bite; kill/bite; dissect; consume.
Breed typically suggests which sequence the dog will be pre-disposed for. For instance, the Greyhound or Whippet live for stalking; chasing; grab; but typically do not have the dissect; consume in the sequence.

Bully breeds (as well as the adorable Jack Russell Terriers & Chihuahuas and others) have the full sequence - they will Stalk; love to chase and grab; were originally bred to kill/bite; dissect; and consume! This is also know as PREY DRIVE which shouldn’t be confused with aggression. These dogs need an outlet for this behaviour, great skills with impulse control, consistent training and an owner and or trainer who understands their needs.
When thinking about adding a dog to your family please do your research or seek the advice of a trainer to help you pick the breed/mixed breed suited for you.

If we all do our part perhaps this consistently growing list of dog attacks will begin to decrease.

Please watch as this is a fabulous video showing dogs body language when they are stressed. These dogs are tolerating being climbed on and grabbed, they are not happy about it! All of these signs can lead to a bite and are preventable.
