This is a typical F5 Poly kitten from Jezreel’s and Coydog’s last litter in January 2024. So this is the quality we expect again this coming winter!

If the opportunity arises, I might still place this lovely girl and instead keep of a kitten out of Jezreel‘s next and last litter, this coming winter - Time will tell!

Still trying hard here to re-create the traditional Maine C**ns I used to breed in the 80s and 90s. :-)

CONFUSION ABOUT MASTERWEAVER AND POLYDACTYLY? (Revised 8/29/2024)

Did PRAIRIEBABY become MASTERWEAVER?

Technically NO! Only MASTERWEAVER belongs to me, Judith Schulz. My Cattery was registered under two names for many, many years. (MasterWeaver with ACA for the F1 and F2 Canadian Polydactyl cats and Prairiebaby with MCBFA, ACA, CFF, ACFA, TICA, CFF and CFA). In 2012 (before my breeding break) Prairiebaby was taken over by Lori Majerrison, the wife of my veterinarian at that time. I kept the MasterWeaver name. So no, Prairiebaby did not “become” Masterweaver. ONE entity Prairiebaby/Masterweaver has now SPLIT into TWO entities. The two Catteries are in absolutely NO affiliation and will never be affiliated in the future.


ARE SNOW SHOES ONLY FOUND IN CANADA?

Even though MASTERWEAVER Polydactyl cats were solely found in Canada, it’s super possible and would be desirable if these nicely rounded snowshoe feet were also naturally occurring in other areas of the world. (they are also found in other parts of North America, including Maine, I was recently advised) I just gave mine the name ”Masterweaver” and that name has obviously been used to describe and label this specific foot formation in scientific research. Sort of like not every facial tissue has to be the Kleenex brand, or does it? Yet, most people call a facial tissue a Kleenex. So most breeders call the Snowshoe foot Masterweaver foot.

MW (MASTERWEAVER) TOE ARRANGEMENT:

Previous and present Canadian Masterweaver Polydactyl foundation cats were/are ALWAYS PP 4WD. They were/are ALWAYS and ONLY snow shoe (also called patty) type. This means ALL of them were/are Polydactyl on all four feet and originally NEVER produced a mitten paw. PRAIRIEPOLY of MASTERWEAVER was actually a PP. PRAIRIEBABY MASTERWEAVER P was actually a PP. Both of them were snow shoes. I only used one P suffix in my pedigrees in the beginning and then later came up with the PP suffix. The PP symbol has been taken over by many other breeders now and simply means the cat is Polydacytl on all four feet. Since there were other Polydactyl lines mixed into the pedigrees later on, some of the Maine C**ns with Masterweaver or Prairiebaby prefix produced mitten paws or in some cases even 2WD (poly on front only).

We also sometimes see a „hybrid foot“. I call a hybrid foot a cross between the MW foot and the hemingway type foot. Most „hybrids“ don’t have a thumb that is higher up but a smaller, second part of the big snow shoe pad.

MasterWeaver Polydactyls never have a declaw on the back foot. However, mixing the MW foot with other type poly feet will eventually change the foot formation in the offspring.

Not that it really matters all that much but for the sake of clarity, again: The ORIGINAL Masterweaver Poly Maine C**n always produces true to its phenotype. One has to know and appreciate pedigrees to understand this.

Some poly cats in my pedigrees do not have a P or PP because there was a time when this suffix was not not added by myself or others. Also, some breeders don’t bother adding a „P“ or “PP“ to their poly cats. Pedigrees do NOT always give clues about poly and non-poly traits.

Polydactyly is a dominant trait! Polydactyl cats cannot be produced by two non-poly parents. If this happens either the breeder wasn‘t paying attention to their breedings or the cat has hidden toes. Please don‘t believe everything breeders post on facebook!

REGISTRATION CONFUSION?

The two Polydactyl Maine C**ns, PRAIRIEPOLY OF MASTERWEAVER and PRAIRIEBABY MASTERWEAVER P, as listed on the Pawpeds Pedigree Database, were both found and registered by myself, Judith Schulz, with ACA, under my MASTERWEAVER Cattery name, back in 2000. I am the original and only founder of all MasterWeaver foundation cats.

Even though I have found that most judges really do prefer a poly foot that evenly touches the ground and has no irregularities, I very much value a variety of poly lines from different, North American origin, including also the Hemingway foot type. All are a great blessing for the gene diversity and health of our breed.

Looking at some ancient pictures and pedigrees of my old Poly Maine C**ns brings back many memories when I still owned both the PB and Masterweaver Cattery and we had a group of foundation breeders. I think some of you would agree how cool it would be to turn back “pedigree time”. :-) Then I come to my senses and realize I would not be able to thank all the wonderful people who have improved them over the years.

For anyone wondering:
It is generally unwise for a breeder to keep several spayed/neutered pets as this does not only hinder a responsible breeding program but also causes these retirees to be harassed by hormonal breeding cats. After keeping sufficient offspring to continue the lines, breeding cats are sometimes kept and sometimes placed into a loving pet home where they can be pampered to the fullest extent, without competition! This has always been the proper way of running a Cattery and the best way to prevent an unhealthy hoarding situation. Ethical breeders don’t place breeding cats when they are “worn out” (as commonly believed) but when it’s the appropriate time for them to retire.

UPDATE MAY 28: I found out this picture was created by a colleage of mine, Debbie Sprenger. I just added her link below.

What a great illustration this is for breeders and pet owners to learn correct type of our beloved breed and to be aware of extremes! Even though they could have used a cat with stronger features on the left, that cat does have a proper head and conforms to breed standard. The cat on the right is as far off as can be and does not conform to breed standard.

Standard is NOT about „feral“ versus „sweet“ look. It is NOT about „American“ versus „Euro“ look! In fact there is no such thing! It is about proper structure, correct traits, good proportions and balance!

This illustration is also not about which kitty we Iike better! it is about the preservation versus destruction of our breed. Preservation doesn’t only refer to type and quality but sequentially also to temperament and health. There are variations within the standard but breeding for extremes always destroys overall quality.

New breeders, PLEASE show your cats to learn about standard!
