I was informed this past Saturday June 8th, by a client in the Kenora area that they had 3 horses show symptoms of the Strangles Virus (Streptococcus Equi). They have now implemented biosecurity measures and reached out to anyone that had been on property recently. unfortunately one of those people was myself.

Upon receiving this news I have disinfected my tools and gear as a precaution, Strangles is generally transmissible via horse-to-horse contact, however it is also known to be transmissible via clothing, footwear and equipment.

I pride my self on running a clean and professional business so I apologize immensely if your horse(s) could have possibly had exposure through myself or equipment. if you had an appointment with me between May 30th and June 8th there is some risk of exposure through my tools and gear. If your horses begin to show any upper respiratory symptoms consistent with Strangles I encourage you to reach out to your vet.

I would like to commend my client for her professionalism and openness to the Northwestern Ontario Horse community by sharing this information with everyone. Thank you for your dedication to this industry.

I want to thank my clients that are all being so willing to accommodate and help while Greg is down and out. I actually had some clients of my own that offered to give their time slots up to open up slots as well as some that have offered to help out with things at my farm so I have more time to give to shoeing and trimming a busier schedule. You are all amazing!!! On behalf of myself, my famiky, Jazmine Sweitzer and the Huffman Family, Thankyou!

To all my clients and the Thunder Bay horse community, as you may have heard one of our farriers, Greg Huffman, is recovering from a significant injury.

While he is healing myself and Jazmine at Feathered Fox Farrier Services will service any of his clients that need work done. Please reach out to me or Jazmine if you need to book an appointment.

You will still pay Greg for these services, not us, so if you can etransfer him directly it helps us not having to manage money and cash.

We ask for patience from our regular clients as well as Greg’s as we do our best to facilitate schedules to accommodate everyone. This means weekends and evenings are going to be utilized to make schedules work, but you will need to be flexible with times available to you as they may not be durning normal working hours.

This is one of those situations when we as a horse community can come together to help and support one of our own We believe everyone can work together to help Greg and his family get through this.

Let’s talk bell boots. Do your bell boots fit properly? To serve their purpose, the bell boot needs to cover the heels of the shoe. Remember Ball gowns are good! Mini skirts are bad! 🔨

A few weeks back we had a client horse fracture a coffin bone. Luke placed this side clipped hind bar shoe on her and used the rear nail holes to stabilize the foot and reduce natural hoof expansion. Luke chose to machine weld a bar shoe using a kerckhaert DF rather than forge weld a bar shoe only for ease as this mare was hauled into the farm for this case. He added a mustad rim snow pad to prevent snow from balling up in the bar shoe.
