Can you spot the ? This is the waiting area for the challenge class at the Nutrien Classic at Tamworth this week. (I wrote this article 5 years ago so it’s from 5 years ago) I know that one of these horses is a stallion, because I know the rider, there is likely more than one. This is a mixed class of mares, geldings and stallions. What’s my point ? We need to stop treating our stallions like precious, dangerous, unsocial beings, lest we create a precious, dangerous, unsociable being. Stallions are just horses .... with balls. Just because they have them doesn’t mean that hormonal behavior at inappropriate times should be acceptable. If we create the boundaries, we can have well behaved, pleasure to deal with stallions. When our 2 boys were still stallions, we took them everywhere- team penning, western shows, the beach, dressage, clinics. No one knew they were stallions - the didn’t squeal, roar, call, sniff, react in any way. Because that was our expectation and the boundaries that we set. I see too many stallions that are guarded and protected and end up being dangerous to both the handler, and and the people around them. Stallion ownership isn’t for everyone, and it shouldn’t be, but If you do own a stallion, please so he can live a happy and full life.
