Meet Jax!

This handsome boy had his first session yesterday! Jax was playing with his sister when he tweaked something in his back. His owners got him in for a treatment right away. He was one happy boy and will be as good as new 😊

One of my favourite parts of my job is working with the animals after an accident and restoring them back to new!

Superficial Gluteal
• it is a protractor of the hindlimb
(brings the leg forward)

Origin: tuber coxae (point of hip), lateral ilium, & gluteal fascia
Insertion: lateral femur
Action: flexes & abducts the limb (abduction is to draw the limb away from the body)

Tensor Fascia Latae (TFL)
•it is a protractor of the hindlimb
(Brings the leg forward)
•it helps the hind leg track straight during motion

Origin: Tuber coxae (point of the hip)
Insertion: fascia and lateral patellar ligament
Action: flexes the hip & extends the stifle

•The lighter blue is the muscle belly
•The fascia is the darker blue at the base of the muscle belly. This is where the muscle blends into the fascia

•this muscle runs deep within the body laying under the spine

Origin: TP’s of lumbar vertebrae & last 2 ribs
Insertion: medial femur
Action: flexes hip & outwardly rotates the thigh

When the horse/dog is standing:
Origin: serrated face of the scapula (medial side)
Insertion: transverse processes of C3~C7
Action: contraction of both sides raises the neck

When the horse/dog is moving:
Origin: transverse processes of C3~C7
Insertion: serrated face of the scapula (medial side)
Action: rotates the scapula towards the head

Bark & Bridle Animal Therapy and I were reminiscing about this session while she worked on my horses a few days ago. The miserable cold and wind had us seeking shelter in the barn on both occasions. Yet there were several quiet moments like this one, with Sam in her element, expertly bringing relief to her equine patients.

FUN FACT FRIDAY!

There are 5 classes of bones in the skeletal system!

Long bones: usually found in the limbs. They provide strength & structure and make movement possible. Ex. Cannon bone

Short bones: they are light and strong. They give strength and support. Ex. Carpus bones

Flat bones: they are good at protecting the body. They are found in the skull, ribs, scapula, and innominate bones.

Sesamoid bones: they are developed in the tendons of the muscles. Found near a joint. Ex. Patella

Irregular bones: bones that are not included in the other classes. Ex. Vertebrae

Symptoms of Injury to the Thoracic Rhomboid:
•loss of free shoulder blade movement
•short striding in the leg
•shoulder spasms may be present
•loss of power, coordination, motion, & ability in the leg

Insertion: cranial radius and tendon of extensor carpi radialis
Action: extends the shoulder and flexes the elbow via the tendon

Symptoms of Injury to the Biceps Brachii:
•decreased movement in bringing the limb forward (decreased protraction)
•swelling at the point of shoulder
•sensitivity at the point of shoulder

Equine Origin: supraspinous ligament at thoracic vertebrae 3 through 10
Canine Origin: spinous processes of thoracic vertebrae 3 through 8 or 9
Insertion: spine of the scapula
Action: elevates the shoulder and assists in bringing the limb forward

What is the supraspinous ligament?

The supraspinous ligament runs along the topline of the thoracic and lumbar vertebrae. It provides the main support for the horses back!

FUN FACT FRIDAY!

The most common types of massage I use during a treatment are effleurage, friction, and petrissage!

What do they look like?

Effleurage is a stroking motion done with the palm of the hand, or with the pads of the fingers or thumbs. These are smooth, slow, gentle moves that create a soothing affect.

Friction is small, circular movement done by the pads of the fingers, the ball of the thumb, a closed fist, or massage tool.

Petrissage consists of several movement, such as picking up, squeezing, rolling, kneading, and wringing. It is designed to address the underlying tissues.
