When looking for a breeder, most responsible breeders will highlight health testing as a regular part of their breeding program. Health testing of the breeding pair (mom & dad) increases the odds of a healthy litter !

🐶🐶🐶🐶🐶🐶🐶

Health testing of the puppy looks for specific ailments that an owner would want to be aware of. This might include tests for the hip, elbow, eye, hearing, heart, and DNA testing. Certain breeds are at greater risk for specific ailments, and will have unique testing requirements

On the other hand, some breeders will advertise health 'checks'. When you see 'checks', always inquire. Oftentimes, breeders will pass off checks as health tests, when in reality they are NOT the same thing. A vet check should always be performed prior to rehoming, but they aren't a substitute for testing!

Oh, by the way... Barkee.ca provides a list of recommended and optional health tests for each breed sourced from the OFA/CHIC.

Small but mighty! 🙌

While a defining characteristic of this group is its small stature, the Toy breed group still contains a diverse range of personalities, activity levels, looks and origins. For example, did you know the was originally a globetrotter? They were brought on board ships to exterminate rats!

While not the case for every member of the group, Toy breeds tend to do very well in smaller spaces (apartment-dwellers, this is for you!), and many are content acting as ‘lap dogs’ as long as their basic exercise needs are met. Toy breeds originate from all around the world!

Breeds like:
Brussels Griffon - Belgium
China - Pekingese, Shih Tzu, Chinese Crested Dog
Havanese - Cuba
Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, English Toy Spaniel - England
Papillon - France/Spain/Italy
Affenpinscher, Miniature Pinscher - Germany
Japanese Chin - South Korea/Japan/China –
Maltese - Malta
Chihuahua - Mexico

Next up we have the non-sporting group! 🥳

Pragmatically, the non-sporting group is very much a diverse collection of different subgroups who do not fit into one of the other groups. Unlike the herding or terrier groups, the non-sporting group does not carry a common set of characteristics. To demonstrate what we mean, this group includes the and , but also includes the , and many, many others.

For you, as a future puppy owner, this means research, research, RESEARCH! Just like with any other breed, ensure you understand each breed’s activity levels, expected size, trainability, and suitability with kids/other animals. Talk to responsible breeders, and assess whether the breed is right for you.

Do you have a favourite non-sporting breed?

Looking for a breed that can do it all? We’d like to introduce you to the Sporting breed group! ⬇️⬇️⬇️

Sporting breeds were originally bred to help out hunters. In particular, to capture and retrieve feathered game both on land, and in the water. Sporting breeds are subdivided into four well-known types; Spaniels, Setters, Retrievers and Pointers. Retrievers are natural-born swimmers, whereas Setters, Spaniels and Pointing breeds tend to be quick on land.

Based on their history, you’re right to assume Sporting breeds to be quite active. While exercise requirements vary by the specific breed, most sporting breeds need regular exercise and space to explore. That said, Sporting breeds are amongst the most loyal and well-rounded companions. Breeds such as the , and are amongst the most popular in North America!

New dog owners should always select a breed that fits with their lifestyle. For no group does this apply more than the Herding group! 🐑🐑🐑

As the name suggests, dogs in the Herding group were purposefully-bred for herding and protecting livestock. As a result, Herding breeds tend to be athletic and possess impressive endurance. This endurance and natural energy requires a consistent outlet for release. Without a release, Herding breeds can become destructive quickly.

Energy-levels aside, Herding breeds are extremely loyal and make for wonderful companions!

Commonly-known Herding breeds include Collies (Border, Rough, Smooth, Bearded), the Old English Sheepdog and the Australian Shepherd. Lesser-known varieties (in 🇨🇦) include the Swedish Vallhund, Entlebucher Mountain Dog, and the Briard.

Do you think you could handle a Herding breed?

Hope you enjoy high energy, because for owners, you’re bound to get it!

Whether small or large, Terriers make great pets for owners willing to put in the work. Similar to hounds, Terriers were originally bred for hunting as well as the ridding of vermin. As a result, they tend to be fearless, observant and highly active. On the other hand, Terriers tend to require more extensive training to rid of undesirable, stubborn behaviours.

You likely already know of many terriers including the West Highland White Terrier 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿, Jack Russell Terrier 🇬🇧, Schnauzer 🇩🇪, and American Staffordshire Terrier 🇺🇸.

Can you name any other Terriers?

A 🐶 is a long-term commitment.

A 🐶 isn’t a new lease, or a fling, or a new year’s resolution.

The average dog’s lifespan is between 10-13 years. Your new 🐶 will transcend several major changes in your life and will be with you every step of the way.

If you’d like to ‘try out’ life with a dog, maybe consider applying for a foster with the many wonderful organizations that exist. Talk to your friends and family who have, or have had a dog. Ask them about the joys of a puppy, but especially ask about the many trials and tribulations involved with puppy ownership and care.

Tens of thousands of dogs are sent to shelters every year. The majority end up in shelters as a result of abandonment.

Responsible breeders and shelters SHOULD co-exist! 🐾

In some circles, breeders are considered taboo. Why should you bring home a puppy from a breeder when there are thousands of dogs housed in shelters (and with rescue groups)? It goes without saying, we support shelters, and we believe every dog deserves a loving home suited to that particular dog.

That said, RESPONSIBLE breeders are not the problem. In fact, responsible breeding plays a big part in solving abandonment and overpopulation issues.

Responsible breeders work hard to ensure their puppies are sent to the right homes. Responsible breeders are rarely in it for the money, and are passionate about the long-term wellbeing of their breeds.

If every breeder was a responsible breeder, we believe shelters would be (nearly) empty and the problem would cease to exist.

Moral of the story: Support shelters AND responsible breeders. ☮️

Temperament is IMPORTANT ❗❗❗

We’d say it’s probably the most important factor when considering a breed. Different breeds are predisposed to act and behave in a certain way. While temperament certainly is impacted by training and socialization, you’ll want to look into breed standards to determine how a well-bred version of a particular breed is likely to behave.

Once you select a breed, it’s equally as important to talk to breeders. Responsible breeders understand their dogs inside-out. They understand how their breed are suppose to behave, and they understand the temperaments of their particular dogs as they grow up. Responsible breeders will also want to learn about you, to determine if their dogs are the right fit for your home and lifestyle.

Lastly, do not equate looks (e.g. Size) with temperament. The last thing you want is a small dog with high prey drive and insane energy levels (e.g. Jack Russell Terrier) if you’re someone who doesn’t like being outdoors. The same applies to larger breeds.

The thought of waiting to take home your adorable puppy sucks, we get it. Today, waitlists for responsible breeders range anywhere from several months to years.

Why the wait?

❓ Demand is at an all-time high. puppies are a real thing
❓ Small breeds produce smaller litter sizes, but smaller breeds are often more in demand
❓ Responsible breeders limit the number of breedings per dam (female) for health reasons
❓ Responsible breeders focus on quality, not quantity

We believe the wait is worth it for a well-bred puppy from a responsible breeder. Talk to a breeder, get on the waitlist. Sometimes, the wait makes the experience so much better, right?

Responsible breeders want to be assured their puppies are placed in environments where they can thrive. Often, that results in a legal contract with terms and clauses outlining an owner’s responsibilities and obligations.

Here’s a quick list:
🐶 Spay or neuter requirement by a certain age
🐶 Non-breeding clause
🐶 Diet and/or weight requirements
🐶 Veterinary care and grooming requirements
🐶 Status update requirements
🐶 Vaccination and medication requirements

Breeders may also have unique requirements not outlined above. Remember, a responsible breeder is always looking out for their puppy’s best interests!

We can't emphasize this enough! A big part of fit has to do with your living situation. 🏠

Do you have space for activities? Do you have a fenced yard? Where will your puppy sleep? Will loud barks annoy your neighbours? Do you have children?

And more importantly, is your environment a good fit for a specific breed?

A bad living situation means headaches for you, and can hinder your puppy's health and development.

When finding a , a takeback policy is something to look out for. A breeder's willingness to take back a puppy in the event of poor fit or health is a strong sign they adhere to responsible breeding practices.

❌ A takeback policy is NOT a return policy. Puppies are not objects. Be sure a puppy is right for you before making the leap!

Puppies are hella cute, but that should NOT be why you want a 🐶. More specifically, you shouldn't pick a dog breed only because of how adorable it is!

Instead, consider your lifestyle, your career, your living situation and your interests. Pick a breed that works for you! Consider the breed's energy levels, willingness to be alone, size, exercise requirements, and propensity to bark.
