UPDATE: Well boy did Marilyn toy with our emotions. We thought she went into heat only to find out she had a false/split heat. So we were unable to bred her and are now patiently waiting for her to go into heat again. Sadly we have no way of predicting with certainty when that will be so keep checking back. She will be bred with handsome small red stud poodle Carter from Doodlecreek in Atwood soon and we hope we will be confirming a pregnancy shortly after. So exciting.

Let’s “Furnish” this debate once and for all!

As mentioned yesterday, Goldendoodle breeders used to believe curly coats were best for folks needing an allergy friendly dog, but DNA advancements have shown it’s not the curl factor that dictates allergy friendly qualities, it is the combination of the furnishings gene and the long coat gene.

This understanding is not new. Geneticists discovered the furnishing gene and its correlation to shedding around 10 years ago, but there is still a lot of misinformation floating around the internet. Many of those sharing outdated information include non-reputable Goldendoodle breeders who do not stay up to date with scientific research.

So, what about the furnishings gene?

Furnishings are arguably one of the first things you’ll notice about a dog that helps you identify it as a characteristic “Goldendoodle”. Furnishings are the longer facial hair, including eyebrows, mustache and beard, found on most Goldendoodles.

Goldendoodles can have 0, 1 or 2 copies of furnishings. Goldendoodles with 0 copies have a “flat” coat, which is similar to a Golden Retriever coat and will shed. Dogs with 1 copy are “Incorrect coat carriers” and have furnishings, but could shed a bit more and may not appear as shaggy a dog with 2 copies. Goldendoodles with 2 copies have full facial furnishings, and paired with the long coat gene, will generally be low to non shed.

What’s the take home point?

Yes, Goldendoodles can be allergy friendly. No, it doesn’t have anything to do with the curl factor. Genetic technology has taught us that furnishings are what confer the low- to non-shedding coats on our Goldendoodles that help make them such optimal family dogs. Due to the outdated idea of curl being a driving force to non-shed qualities many breeders still advertise F1bs as being the right choice for allergy friendly households, but actually the ideal combination for folks who need an allergy friendly dog is a Multigenerational (Goldendoodle x Goldendoodle) with 2 copies of the furnishings gene and 2 copies of the long coat gene. *All Goldendoodles are fixed for 2 copies for the long coat gene. If you are a family needing these allergy friendly qualities, please work with a breeder who tests their dogs for AND is educated with the furnishings gene.

🚨 If you have allergies, we highly recommend you consult your allergist before purchasing a puppy of any breed. GANA breeder members are not permitted to guarantee families will not have an allergic reaction to their dogs. People can also have allergies to dog salvia and urine.

Per our Code of Ethics:
“I will not guarantee hypo-allergenic qualities or non-shedding coats to any customer”.

After 2 years of covid holdups and impacts these are the kind of letters we are so proud to receive from our guardian homes:

"July 18, 2022
Jayne King & Tanya Smith
About two years ago we entered into a Guardian Agreement with you. This was a new experience for us and a relatively new business venture for you two. Our interaction deserves a comment.

Over the past few years there have been significant, life altering experiences in each of our lives, the least of which was the Covid complication, just to provide context. I have always held that one is only able to judge a relationship, business or personal, when something goes wrong or does not follow expectations. In this situation, events did not follow our mutual and individual expectations. Our puppy Skye, now a young adult, occupies a very special place in our hearts and home.

Throughout our interaction you have both placed the benefit of Skye at the top of every consideration and decision. You have been forthright, honourable and compassionate. Skye and we have been the beneficiaries. You have both gone beyond reasonable expectations. Thank you.

Your focus on Skye and her needs plus the integrity you both demonstrated is impressive. We have enjoyed our interaction. Your actions have produced the best possible outcomes in a complicated environment. We are very appreciative.

Thank you again
John & Evangeline"

First vet visit is such an important day! We like to ensure that this day goes smoothly. We work up to it by exposing the puppies to travel before and have special treats ready to distract from the microchip/vaccination puncture. They were relaxed, played and all went to sleep so we could chat with Dr. D. We’re always learning something.

Dogs in the wild rarely den. Studies show they most often like to sleep out in the open and are pack animals with a socially complex life. They may move away only a few metres to have some privacy but this is not to be confused with isolation. Crating at times may be a way to keep your puppy safe but it should be well considered and never forced isolation for long periods. Take the time to give this article by Wholesome Canine a read. Isolation in both humans and animals never yields positive results.

Why has crating become commonplace? Seemingly, it's for the convenience of guardians. But what are the potential longterm effects of confining new dogs and puppies?
