Breed Series Part 1: Yorkshire Terrier
The Yorkshire Terrier or "Yorkie" is from England and has been a loved breed for many years. These dogs are very small, the breed standard at 4-7 pounds. Curious if a Yorkie is the breed for you? Read below or take a look at the pros and cons in the graphic above.
The breed's fur is more like human hair, which is good as this means the dogs are hypoallergenic, or do not typically cause allergies. On the other hand, because their fur is more like hair, they require more grooming than other breeds to avoid tangles.
Yorkies are very small, meaning they make great indoor or "apartment" dogs. On the other hand, yorkies are known for being difficult to housetrain.
The average lifespan for Yorkshire Terriers is quite long, at about 12-15 years. While they have a long lifespan, they are likely to develop health problems as they age. These include luxating patella, otherwise known as a weak knee joint, dental disease and others.
