Do your research when getting a dog. You may be contributing to puppy Mills or backyard breeders.
Our Ontario laws- the ones that protect animals, they need an upgrade please. Because this uphill battle, it feels like it's never going to end.
There are little (and big) dogs everywhere who've been stuck behind walls and living in secret tight spaces where no one can see them, who struggle at just sorting out how to be a dog because backyard breeders and puppymills exist.
Meet Millie ❤️
Millie's life was saved because people worked together.
Millie has never known the company of people, nor the comfort a gentle hand can bring. Until those who gave her freedom came along.
A big shout out to those working behind the scenes. Special angels 😇.
Millie & two other dogs once dumped, were graciously spayed and offered grooms. This is where their lives got to begin.
But sometimes, new beginnings- they're scary. And unknown.
And so this is where fostering comes in. The gift to work at your own pace. In a way that feels most comfortable too.
Back yard breeders and mills- they can sometimes put on big disguises to fool people.
Some of their disguises 🥸:
Advertising "rare colours"- and calling them some sort of new fancy breed- walk away. ✅️
Breeding mixes- (this sure isn't for lineage or to have a specific job)- walk away. ✅️
Showcasing lots of puppies over and over again and available on demand to you without a wait list and reference check and a commitment to the dog for life- walk away. ✅️
Coming from a rescuer who feels like the day never ends because there are so many to help,
this next sentence might ruffle some feathers (sorry about that), but here's the thing.
Although I personally do not choose the option of buying a dog because my choice is to rescue, I still know that- Good breeders DO exist. They are not the problem. And if people only accessed those individuals we wouldn't be in such a big mess.
A REAL breeder though- they sure are few and far between.
Remember, It's those 🥸 wearing their disguise that are the problem.
The ones whose momma dogs often get left behind. The ones who make a profit. The ones who leave momma dogs to pick up the pieces of broken lives.
Millie will be ok. Because of rescue. ❤️
If you choose rescue- please do your research. Not all rescues are the same.
If you choose to purchase- please do your research. Not all will be the same.
