✨ new intake - meet Sairi ✨

This gal is new to Ontario and is settling in to Burlington area with her foster.

Sairi is just under a year. She has previously spent a long time living in a shelter before joining our care. While cautious and shy in this new setting, she’s warming up after a week in care.

She is enjoying having a fur friend in the foster home and has just begun trying to play. She enjoys walks. She has lots of puppy in her ready to come out as she continues to get guidance and find trust in her surroundings.

Sairi will be in foster care over the holidays. We SO appreciate our fosters and particularly those with dogs over the holidays. We know it’s an extra commitment.

Welcome Sairi to SOS care! 💞

That’s a wrap! ❤️ Thank you to everyone who joined us on December 6 for our Scruff Soirée. It was so amazing to celebrate 10 years of rescue with our SOS community.

We can’t wait to see what 2025 has in store for SOS and all of the fun events to come. 💫

A big shout out to our amazing sponsors who helped make the Scruff Soirée possible:

✨ new intake - welcome Patty ✨

You met their sibling Remy, but now it’s time to meet Patty!

Patty is growing up SO fast in rescue care. The first picture is when she was about 8 weeks old. She’s been living in a foster home in Cayman Islands but is now with a foster in Toronto in hopes of finding her family soon.

Patty is a female and is roughly 3 months old now. She’s a mixed breed, will likely grow to about medium size (30-50lbs if we had to guess).

Patty is working on all puppy skills with her foster. She’s in the bitey hand phase and needs guidance with channeling her zooms and s***k. Patty is learning basics like potty and crate training.

Patty is not currently adoptable as we are closed for the holiday season. Patty will be in foster care over the holiday season with about 30 other scruffs.

Welcome Patty 💞

As of yesterday, we have some more dogs in care. We’re doing our best to get as many dogs out of shelters before our holiday cut off. 7 pooches just arrived. We will update you on them more soon, but wanted to send some “first look” photos from their fosters!!

Ekkk! 💞💞💞

We’re visiting a local shelter on Friday to meet some dogs. If you are on our foster list please reach out to let us know if you’re available before the holidays 🙏🏻

✨ new adoptable - meet Duke ✨

Male | 3 Years Old | 58 Pounds | Medium Energy | Coexists well with other dogs | No cats | Did well meeting dog-savvy kids | From Mexico | Living in Erin, Ontario | Affectionate & loves to be with his people

Everyone, meet DUKE. DUKE, meet everyone. At just about 3 years old, DUKE is an affectionate mixed-breed pooch who loves to love his people. You guessed it - he’s up for the task of being an excellent companion if you’re up to the task of learning all there is to learn about him. This includes learning how he communicates with his body language and is something his current trainer would be happy to help coach you on!

In a way, DUKE is a simple scruff. He loves playing with his ball and participating in a round of fetch. He also likes to sleep and eat. Lol. In other ways, he’s more complex and would do well in a home that is looking forward to implementing instruction from his trainers.

As DUKE is currently completing a training program in a boarding facility, he gets to spend afternoons hiking with a pack of dogs. It’s pretty fun for him! With a medium energy level, DUKE requires an hour of exercise a day, think: a nice long walk and time to play outside. It doesn’t have to be a hike!

In this environment, DUKE has been able to progress with his interactions among other dogs. Of course, his new fam will need to continue advocating for him! As we mention the importance of advocating for him, we should also say that DUKE has a high prey drive and will do best, and needs to go to a home with no cats. Can he live with children though? He sure can! Supervision is, of course, necessary but provided he trusts his leader(s), he will do well interacting with respectful kiddos. DUKE could also live with a 9-5er provided he gets a bathroom break midday. Something to consider!

Apply to adopt DUKE today at www.saveourscruff.org

DUKE is available for informal meetups with his foster. If you’re interested, send us an email & give us some insights into why you’re a good fit for him! Please email [email protected] to set this up. Please note, DUKE’s current location is Erin, Ontario.

Happy 12th Birthday to Mascot Micke! 🎉

Twelve years ago, Micke and his siblings were abandoned in a box on the porch of an animal rescue, with their mother tied to a fence nearby. They spent the night in the rain until someone found them the next morning. Micke spent his first year at that shelter, watching his mom and siblings get adopted, until he was the last one left. To give him a better chance, he was flown to Moringa's Mission / Los Ayudantes de Animales Republica Dominicana rescue in Ontario. But his luck didn’t improve, and he spent another year in foster care.

Dogs who stay in rescue or shelter care for longer periods are often wrongly labeled as “bad” dogs. “Why are they still here? There must be something wrong with them.” But from a mom’s perspective of this incredible soul dog, I can only say I wish I had met him sooner. Micke’s friends and family will testify that being in rescue for a long time says nothing about a dog’s character.

The real issue is that there are simply too many dogs in need. Micke’s story is a reflection of that. It’s not that these dogs are bad; it’s that there aren’t enough resources & homes to support them. There’s an urgent need to address overpopulation, the constant rehoming of dogs, and prevent dogs from sitting in long-term rescue & shelter care.

This , we’re focusing our fundraising on Project Prevention. This initiative aims to tackle the root causes of overpopulation, prevent dog surrenders, and stop dogs from languishing in long-term care. Funds will support medical care, behavioral support, and daily care to help dogs stay in their homes, find their homes faster, and find ways to reduce overpopulation. Donations may also be used for innovative solutions for individual cases.

We’re excited to announce that all donations from December 1st to 3rd will be matched up to $10,000!

Please consider donating: https://give-can.keela.co/giving-tuesday-20242

P.S. If you’re looking to adopt or volunteer, we recommend meeting dogs in person at a shelter or rescue. Micke, for example, was babysat by the founder of SOS, which helped us realize he was the one.

✨new intake - welcome Kori✨

Kori is the 11th and final scruff to meet from our trip to Mexico last month.

Kori is a stunning tri-coloured gal, she’s about 30lbs and 3 years old. Kori has been adjusting to Toronto after leaving the shelter she lived in with over 400 dogs.

Kori has loved the individual attention that she gets in foster care. She enjoys a few walks a day, playing with toys and being affectionate with her foster family.

Kori is working on getting comfortable around new people as well as getting comfy being alone. We’ve been giving her some extra time to settle in and will keep her in care over the holidays before going up for adoption.

She’ll spend the holidays in at-home boarding to focus on learning some skills. She’ll be looking for a new placement in the new year (ideally someone interested in adoption!!) so don’t hesitate to reach out with any questions if you’re interested.

For now, let’s welcome Kori to SOS! 💞

Black Friday adoptables > Black Friday deals

Check out these pets all over Canada. While most are available to adopt in Ontario, if you have a friend on the west coast don’t forget to share this post with them too.

This is just a sliver of the animals we found alone but many of the shelters have multiple cats, dogs or small animals that are black and are waiting to find their forever homes.

We included Poppy who is available to adopt through our organization, check her out on our website!

Please share, let’s get these animals home! 🖤

KARMA IS ADOPTED AFTER 278 DAYS!!! 💞🫶🏻✨

We are so excited to share that Karma found her person! Thank you to everyone who has been along this journey with karma. Multiple fosters, trainers, donors, vet staff, photographers, shelter staff, sos team & the community sharing her far and wide.

Karma was set to be euthanized and all of you helped save her life.

Thank you.

We love you Karma ✨💞

P.S. 👀 the last photo to see her sleeping soundly in her new home. A huge difference from the howling shelter dog we met in February. 🥲

We had a great time meeting all of our event attendees at yesterday’s adoption event. We have started reviewing applications and replying. Please check your junk mail as to not miss an important communication! 📬

We recognize that not everyone who met dogs yesterday will be chosen to adopt those dogs specifically, but we do keep applications on file and you can email us anytime to apply your application to a different dog or to join our foster program!

When we say there are hundreds of dogs waiting to come into care, we really mean it. We’ve met them.

✨ new intake - meet Wilko ✨

While we usually post pictures of new arrivals settling into our care .. we were shared these adorable photos of Wilko in foster care in Cayman Islands!

Wilko arrived last week with Libby who we already introduced. Same story for Wilko, he was rescued from being euthanized at 9 months old.

Yes, you do see pictures of this sweet boy cuddling with cats & dogs. Wilko has been great with fur siblings and one of his favourite things is being chased by dogs. “Look how fast I am!”

Wilko is around 10 months and is a mixed breed. He’s now settling into his foster home in Ontario. We always take it easy to allow dogs to decompress for at least a week or two.

Welcome Wilko 💞
