It's the first full weekend of September and we have emergency hours until midnight all weekend long, starting tonight from 7 p.m. to midnight. There's been a new face among us this week because we have had the pleasure of welcoming veterinary student Ling to our clinic!

Originally from Toronto, Ling will head to Guelph to embark on her final year of veterinary studies at the Ontario Veterinary College at the University of Guelph after she finishes her one-week externship with us.

Ling chose our clinic to do her externship because of the lack of exotic animal education and training at OVC. In particular, Ling is interested in surgery and is enjoying observing the surgeries we do on exotic species. And, as you can see, she is also making fast friends with one of our rat patients!

We hope that you have been enjoying your time with us, Ling, and we appreciate you choosing our clinic for your externship. We wish you a successful last year at OVC!

It's not every day that we have the opportunity to post portraits of our patients. This delightful portrait was drawn especially for us by a young family member of our patient Rosie the bunny. The budding artist depicted her beloved Rosie as contentedly being spoiled by mountains of her favourite foods. Rosie was recently boarding at our clinic and has already gone home to her family, who were excited to be reunited with Rosie again!

Have you started your holiday shopping yet? Our patient Jingle the lovebird wants to remind you that the holiday season is only just a few short months away! Jingle is back at home with his family now after having his own little holiday boarding at our clinic for part of the summer. Jingle is very friendly and social, and our veterinary assistant Rachel says that she and Jingle enjoyed having lunch together during his stay with us.

School is starting next week, but first, veterinary student Corrinne wanted to do her externship at our clinic before she hits the books. Corrinne, who actually grew up a short distance away from our clinic, is heading into her final year of veterinary studies at the Ontario Veterinary College at the University of Guelph.

Corrinne has had a passion for exotic animal medicine from a young age - and it shows! Even before she started veterinary school, Corrinne volunteered at OVC's Avian and Exotics Service before it closed in August 2022. She has also volunteered her time at a wildlife centre. Corrinne also has personal experience with bearded dragons, having had a beardie named Mushu in her family.

Corrinne chose our clinic to do a one-week externship to continue gaining experience and knowledge of exotic animal medicine. Her first day was yesterday and Corrinne says she is not only enjoying interacting with our friendly and supportive staff, but she is also having fun meeting our patients who represent a wide variety of different species. As you can see, she has already made fast friends with one of our lionhead bunny patients!

Shadows can be described as dark and mysterious...but cuddly? You bet! Our patient Shadow the bunny came to our clinic for an appointment with our Dr. Nur and she says Shadow is very cuddly indeed!

Hello! My name is Stitch! Our patient Stitch the gerbil is back home with his family now after spending some time boarding with us. Stitch is very friendly and will always say hello to the staff, but they have to be in the right place at the right time. That's because Stitch spends most of the day in his burrow, which is natural gerbil behaviour. In the wild, gerbils dig burrows, which are their homes. They use their burrows to sleep, store food, hide from predators and escape extreme weather conditions.

This colourful character is our patient Jonny the blue and gold macaw. Jonny is back at home with his family after spending some time boarding with us. Our veterinary technician Amanda says it was challenging to take a photo of affectionate Jonny because every time she would approach him, he would put his head down to ask for scratches!

We'll be closing at 7 o'clock tonight after our regular clinic hours, but we do have emergency hours the rest of the weekend. Opposites attract, as the idiom goes, and our patients Snowball and Thumper wholeheartedly agree! The bunny BFFs came to our clinic recently for a routine appointment. This complementary pair also both agree that going to the doctor is more fun when they are together.

What you're looking at is not a painting - although it looks like it could be! This ethereal photo of our patient CoCo the pineapple green-cheeked conure (a.k.a. pineapple conure) perched with the perfect background was sent to us by her mom. She says CoCo is very playful and loves to dance. CoCo's balanced diet to fuel her active days includes fruit, which she really enjoys - except for bananas, which her mom says CoCo doesn't like.

We are pleased to be welcoming veterinary student Adrienne to our clinic! Adrienne has already completed the first week of her two-week externship with us and her second week started today. Adrienne is a Toronto native and, after she spends part of her summer with us, she will start her final year of veterinary studies this September at the Ontario Veterinary College at the University of Guelph.

Adrienne chose to do her externship at our clinic because she wanted to get more comfortable with handling exotic patients. She knows that learning more about caring for exotic pets will be very helpful for her and her future patients.

During her time with us so far, Adrienne has not only been fascinated with the variety of different species who come through our doors, but she is also enjoying exploring the world of exotic animal medicine - and surgery in particular.

We hope you enjoy the rest of your time with us, Adrienne, and we wish you much success in your final year of veterinary studies. Thank you for choosing our clinic for your externship!

There's an undeniable "joie de vivre" that comes with dancing and snacking - just ask our patient Bao the Quaker parakeet! Bao is back home now after spending some time boarding with us. Bao is only eight-months-old and it was her first time staying at our clinic. She enjoyed spending time with our staff, who observed that Bao loves to dance, snack and climb on her swing, which also doubles as a ladder.

Most people know that Aristotle is an ancient Greek philosopher. But we also know that Aristotle is a guinea pig and our patient. Aristotle came to our clinic recently and our veterinary technician Amanda says that he was very relaxed during his routine appointment. Amanda also says Aristotle was very curious - just like his ancient Greek namesake!

Who's looking at you? Why, it's our patient Francis Liberbunn (named after Francis Libermann, of course)! Francis Liberbunn came to our clinic for a routine check-up with our Dr. Nur. He was recently adopted from a rescue into a family who has three other rabbits and is still in the early stages of bonding with his family. Congratulations on your new forever family, Francis Liberbunn, from all of us at the clinic!

Mr. Rogers famously said "look for the helpers." And you don't have to look any further than our patient Shandy the bunny. Shandy is going home today after spending a few days boarding at our clinic. During his time with us, he graciously helped our staff fold the laundry. You were a great help to us, Shandy, and we enjoyed having you stay with us. Thank you, Shandy!

If you've been to our clinic recently, you may have noticed a new face amongst us. We have been enjoying the company of veterinary student Sophia, who is currently in her second week of a two-week externship at our clinic. Sophia is from nearby Vaughan, Ontario and this September she will be going into her final year at the Ontario Veterinary College at the University of Guelph.

Sophia chose our clinic to do her externship because not only does she have a passion for exotic animal medicine (especially birds!), but her own parrot was a patient of ours years ago. Sophia appreciates the guidance from our staff along with getting hands-on experience and learning about the different species who are our patients - some of which she hasn't even seen at other small animal practices. At home, Sophia enjoys the company of her black-headed caique named Georgie and cat named Aasha.

Thank you for choosing our clinic for your externship, Sophia. We hope you enjoy the rest of your time with us and we wish you all the best for your final year of veterinary studies!

"There are gold, silver and bronze medals...but what about a ruby medal?" That is the question our patient Ruby the African grey would like to know. Ruby spent some time boarding at our clinic recently. When she was with us, she really enjoyed the company of our staff - and her toys, of course! Ruby is back home with her family now and we are confident that she will be watching the upcoming Olympics with great enthusiasm even though there are no ruby medals.

People who seek fame want to see their name in lights. But our patient Imi the sulcata tortoise is more than happy to see his name in food! Imi is at home with his family now after recently spending some time boarding with us. Our veterinary assistant Janet says that Imi was very friendly with all of the staff and when it was time for bed he would cuddle up with his big comfy pillow at night. But before bedtime, Janet says Imi would eat an evening meal consisting of grass soaked in water with calcium powder sprinkled on top. Janet and the other staff members would form the grass into different shapes; such as spelling out Imi's name and making hearts in honour of Valentine's Day.

Happiness is...

Happiness is...a song in your heart. Our patient Ringo the cockatiel loves to sing and wants to serenade everyone with his original tune. Thank you, Ringo, for sharing your beautiful song with us!

Shake a tail feather!

Our patient Chirp the duck knows how to strut her stuff and shake a tail feather! Chirp came to our clinic to get treatment for a foot issue. Her foot is much better now and she was eager to show us her best moves.

MoDiddie Beats The Heat

What better way to beat the heat! MoDiddie the green-winged macaw's mom sent us this wonderful video of MoDiddie having some summertime fun with the garden hose.
