Supplements can enhance your pet’s health, but they can’t replace the foundation of a high-quality diet. Just like with humans, a poor diet can’t be fixed by adding supplements alone. ⁣

The nutrients in whole foods are vital for your pet’s overall well-being, providing the essential building blocks for strong immunity, healthy digestion, and vibrant energy. ⁣

Start with a nutrient-dense, balanced diet, and then consider supplements as a way to fill in the gaps or address specific health needs. ⁣

Prioritize what goes in the bowl first—true wellness begins there! ⁣

It’s not a secret that as pet parents we want our fur kids to live forever 🐶❤️🐱
⁣⁣⁣
Here are 5 things I focus on when it comes to helping my patients and my own pets thrive. ⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣1. Nutrition 🥩 - if I had to pick one pillar to be the most important and influential, this is it here. Nutrition and diet can make or break your pet’s health. As a holistic veterinarian, I recommend balanced, species appropriate fresh food diets. I do not recommend highly processed diets, such as kibble or canned food. If you currently find yourself in a situation where a fresh food diet is not financially possible, that’s ok! Top your pet’s kibble with dark leafy greens, and any of your cooked, lean and unseasoned meats. Every little bit counts!⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
2. Microbiome 🦠 - the microbiome is the diverse population of bacteria, fungi, protozoa and yeast that inhabit your pet’s gastrointestinal tract. If you know me, you know that I am a little bit obsessed with your pet’s microbiome. Why? Because the microbiome is responsible for your pet’s gut health, immune system function, mitigating systemic diseases and balancing their mental health!⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
3. Reduce Toxin Exposure ☣️- unfortunately toxins can be found all over in today’s world. From our water, to herbicides on our foods, pesticides on the lawns and even the medications our pets consume, we need to do our best to try and reduce exposure as much as possible. ⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
4. Movement 🏃🏻‍♂️- exercise is crucial for our pets. Beyond physical movement itself, exercise allows our pets to be mentally stimulated and also promotes lymphatic movement and drainage which is key in toxin removal. ⁣⁣⁣

5. Mental Stimulation 🧠- keep that brain working! Whether you are teaching your pet tricks, or focusing on their breed specific needs, keeping their brain active throughout their entire life plays a large part in overall health and longevity.

These are my 5 pillars of optimal pet health - did I miss anything you think is important? What do you do to ensure optimal health with your pets? Share with me in the comments 👇🏼👇🏼👇🏼👇🏼

Milky Oat Tops are easily one of my favourite herbs to use in day to day preparations not just for my dogs but for myself as well. ⁣

⁣🌿Oat tops are known as nervines, meaning they are beneficial in supporting your pet’s nervous system. Nervines go deep and help replenish the nervous system from the inside out. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
🌿Turn to this herb if your pet has been overstimulated and needs to relax and balance their nervous system. Using oat tops will allow also your pet to be better equipped at adapting to daily stressors. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
🌿The oat tops can been turned into a tincture or they can be made into an infusion (tea) and mixed into your dog or cat’s food daily.⁣

🌿⁣Oats are also a nutritional powerhouse and can be used to help boost your pet’s daily intake of minerals. Nutrients like silica, chromium, calcium, magnesium and zinc are found in abundance in this wonderful plant. ⁣

🌿There are no known contraindications to using oat tops (other than an oat allergy) and can be easily incorporated into your pet’s herbal pantry. ⁣

Yang energy is the energy responsible for warming the body and activating bodily functions. ⁣

When there is a deficiency in Kidney Yang energy your pet will be begin to slow down and show signs of being cold, often this is accompanied by weakness (for a more detailed list of symptoms see my previous post).⁣

Luckily there are many readily accessible foods and herbs that can be included into your pet’s diet to help tonify (increase) the Yang energy of the kidneys.⁣

A short list includes⁣
- Kidney (beef or sheep)⁣
- Shrimp⁣
- Mussels⁣
- Raspberry (organic if possible)⁣
- Fennel seeds⁣
- Lamb ⁣

Basil, rosemary and fenugreek are also great herbs that can be added in addition to the items listed above.⁣

Because Yang is the warm energy of the body and these patients are usually deficient, we typically want to gently cook these foods so as to help with bringing in warmth. Fruits do not need to be cooked.⁣

⁣Herbs are a wonderful way to support your pet’s respiratory system.

Astragalus root - Astragalus root is an immune enhancing herb which helps your dog better cope with the ups and downs of a stressed immune system. It helps to increase blood flow and support the cardiovascular system as well as strengthen the immune system against infection.⁣

Fenugreek seeds: this herb with a variety of uses. It can help modulate diabetes, can heal gastric ulcers and even help support the immune system. Fenugreek can also help with supporting the respiratory system and help suppress irritation of the throat and respiratory passages. ⁣

Garlic: contrary to popular belief, garlic is only toxic in excessive doses and actually has amazing anti-viral and anti-bacteria properties. The powerful enzyme found in garlic (allicin) is known to help ward off viral and bacterial infections. Some dog breeds are more at risk of toxicity with this herb.⁣

Fennel seeds: fennel seeds increase the mechanism that causes mucous to be removed from the lungs. Fennel seeds can also help with inflammation of the upper respiratory tract and has anti-inflammatory properties which can be used to help with coughing.⁣

Thyme: the volatile oils in this herb suppress spasming of the bronchi and help to break down mucous formation in the lungs. Thyme has the added benefit of being a wonderful antibacterial herb which can help to fight off infections of the respiratory tract. ⁣

Echinacea: the roots of this pretty flower are used as a tea or in dried powdered form to help strengthen the immune system and also prevent upper respiratory infections. It is recommended that the herb be discontinued after 8 weeks of consecutive use.⁣

Are you using any of these herbs for your dog? Let me know below!⁣

Most of you are familiar with this breed of cat. For those of you who are not, it’s a Bengal 😍⁣

Bengals are quite literally small little leopards. Why does this matter? Because they need to be fed as such.⁣

I have had many Bengal owners reach out in frustration because their cats have developed chronic diarrhea and/or vomiting that they cannot get a handle on. Having tried every single bag of kibble and canned food possible, they come to us looking for help.⁣

What do we do? We change their diet to a species appropriate, balanced raw or cooked diet. We throw in some herbs and supplements to help rebuild the gut and suddenly the vomiting stops and the poops are hard once again. ⁣💩

Cats are not meant to eat highly processed kibble diets and Bengals in particular do not seem to tolerate processed foods at all. So if you’re a Bengal owner, or a cat owner, remember that you have an obligate carnivore living in your home. Will they tolerate kibble? Sure. Will you end up seeing inflammatory issues down the road because of it? Count on it. ⁣

Swipe to the new friend we made today 😍😍😍😍😍😍⁣

⁣⁣
⁣⁣
In keeping with spooky season, let’s talk about hands down, one the nastiest things around: 𝐓𝐈𝐂𝐊𝐒 🤮🤮🤮🤮⁣⁣
⁣⁣
These are some ways we keep our dogs safe:
⁣⁣
1. 𝐂𝐡𝐞𝐜𝐤 𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐜𝐤 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐜𝐤 some more, and while you’re at it, check yourself too! Being hands on is the easiest way to spot and get of ticks. Finding and removing a tick within 24 hours of attachment greatly reduces the risk of transmission of Lyme disease.⁣⁣
2. 𝐀 𝐰𝐡𝐨𝐥𝐞 𝐟𝐨𝐨𝐝 𝐝𝐢𝐞𝐭! Eating a diet of fresh and living foods will support your pet and provide a supercharged immune system to help fight off a run in with 𝘉𝘰𝘳𝘳𝘦𝘭𝘪𝘢 𝘣𝘶𝘳𝘨𝘥𝘰𝘳𝘧𝘦𝘳𝘪 (the causative agent of Lyme disease). Did you know that 95% of dogs that are bitten by an infected tick seroconvert and do not show symptoms of Lyme disease, and therefore do not require any treatment!
3. 𝐇𝐞𝐫𝐛𝐬! Incorporate herbs into your dogs diet to help repel ticks and fleas!⁣⁣
4. 𝐍𝐚𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐚𝐥 𝐫𝐞𝐩𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬: there are many wonderful natural topical repellents available that can act as your first line of defence against ticks and fleas! The key ingredient you want in your repellent is: 𝐍𝐄𝐄𝐌 𝐎𝐈𝐋.
5. 𝐓𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠: Always be sure to run tick testing on your dog at least once a year, but also 8 weeks after coming into contact with any ticks. Note: a positive on an 4DX or Accuplex does not mean your dog has Lyme disease, it means that it was exposed to the bacteria.⁣⁣
6. 𝐀𝐯𝐨𝐢𝐝!! There are certain areas in the city that are known for being tick hot spots (for example Rouge Valley in Toronto). Simply avoid these areas and choose other parks to enjoy. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Whether you choose to put your pet on conventional meds or not, the list above still applies. Conventional medication is not 100% guaranteed and you should always continue to check your pet and remove any unwanted visitors (with tick pullers). Your pet’s risk will depend on its breed, lifestyle and your location, so talk to your vet to assess what approach is best for you.⁣⁣
⁣⁣

𝐌𝐲 𝐀𝟏 𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐃𝐚𝐲 𝟏⁣

To say Kristina is like my right hand is an absolute understatement. Recently she injured her knee and I was without her for 2 weeks, and let’s just say I almost had to close the practice down 😅😅⁣

She does it all folks, draws blood like a champ, places catheters in veins I can’t even see, keeps your pets comfortable and stress free during their exams and most importantly, she puts up with me all day long!⁣

I can’t believe we’ve know each for 7 years and can’t imagine working without you by my side! ⁣

Please let’s all give Kristina some love for 𝐯𝐞𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐫𝐲 𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐧𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐧 𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐰𝐞𝐞𝐤!!! ⁣

We love you!!!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️⁣

🦠🦠🦠 THE MICROBIOME🦠🦠🦠

It really is a remarkable thing! This massive population of organisms Inhabiting their GI tract is responsible for:⁣

1. Digestion of food⁣
2. Production of vitamins ⁣
3. Regulation of the immune system ⁣
4. Maintaining the structural integrity of the mucosa ⁣
5. Metabolism of drugs ⁣

There are even studies now suggesting that the microbiome plays a role in our nervous system and blood brain barrier 🧠😱⁣

It’s so important to keep this diverse population of bugs happy and thriving and do our best to avoid inappropriate use of medications that could cause depletion or dysbiosis in our pet’s gut. ⁣

Here are 6 drugs that are known to alter the microbiome when used for long periods or repeatedly:⁣

1. Antibiotics - as the name states these drugs wipe out the bad bugs but also take out the good guys with them.
2. Proton pump inhibitors: these medications reduces # acid production in the stomach but can also cause disruption of the microbiome when used long term.⁣
3 & 4. Parasite prevention: these guys can cause an alteration in the population of bacteria in your pet’s gut. This includes both oral and topical medications. Try natural prevention methods for topical parasites and f***l testing to asses the type of intestinal parasite your pet has so that treatment is targeted and short.⁣
5. Laxatives 💩. Common laxatives can cause dysbiosis when used long term. Be sure to counter that with good prebiotics or use natural laxatives!⁣
6. NSAIDS (or nonsteoidal anti-inflammatory drugs) are commonly used for pain and inflammation but these guys also have the capability to disrupt the gut micro flora when used long term (and also can do a number on the kidneys and liver in some patients). Try adding in a multimodal approach to pain management to reduce the need for this type of medication.⁣

Has your pet dealt with microbiome issues after using any of these drugs?⁣

The liver is one of the most amazing organs in your pet’s body!⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
Its functions include:⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
1) Detoxification⁣⁣⁣
2) Protein synthesis⁣⁣⁣
3) Immunity
4) Nutrient metabolism⁣⁣⁣
5) Hormone production⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣
And more!⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣
We love the liver so let’s dive into some herbs that can help support the liver and assist with detoxification!⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
1. 🌱Milk thistle (sylibum marianum) — active constituent: silymarin. Milk thistle seed is a potent antioxidant for the liver, slows down calcium metabolism, decreases the activity of tumour promoting cells and protects against hepatotoxic drugs.⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣
2. 🌱Globe artichoke (Cynara scolymus): studies show that artichoke leaves stimulate the production of bile by the liver cells, acts as an antioxidant for the liver and reduces cholesterol. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
3. 🌱Dandelion (Taraxacum officinale):The leaves of this ubiquitous plant can help with cholecystitis and the roots can help with cholecystitis and treating jaundice.⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣
4. 🌱Schisandra (Schisandra chinensis): Research indicates that schisandra fruit is effective in protecting the liver from toxins and stimulates its repair. Another study in humans indicated that schisandra can be used in the treatment of hepatitis. In veterinary medicine this herb can be used for acute or chronic liver disease, chemical damage to the liver and reduced liver function. ⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣
5. 🌱Chamomile (Matricaria recutita). Chamomile is a cholegogue which means it helps with the production and flow of bile. It’s anti-microbial properties have been utilized when treating bacterial liver infections.⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣
6. 🌱Burdock (Arctium lappa): parts used —> root, leaves an fruits. Studies in human models demonstrate that anti-inflammatory and liver protective properties, which are particularly effective for treat acute live disease. One specific study indicated that Burdock has specific affinity to protect the liver against acetaminophen, as demonstrated by human studies.⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
As a reminder, herbs and herbal medicines are not a one-size fits all and the herbs mentioned above should only be used with the guidance of a veterinary herbalist/holistic veterinarian 🙏🏼
⁣⁣⁣
Have you used any of these herbs?

Whether you realize it or not, you’ve likely had a gastronomical experience with the Maillard Reaction. The crunch of your bacon, the sweet taste as you crack into that hard layer of your crème brûlée, these are all variations of a Maillard Reaction.⁣

So why do we get a free pass and not our pets? Because we don’t consume bacon at every meal (at least I’m hoping we don’t) nor do we eat Crème Brûlée twice a day from 8 weeks old until the day we die.⁣

The high heat processing of kibble causes what we know as a Maillard Reaction (MR). ⁣

So why do we care?⁣

1. MRs from a chemical compound called acrylamide. Acrylamide is a carcinogenic compound which is converted into glycidamide in the body and causes damage to your pet’s DNA. Rodent studies have linked acrylamide exposure and ingestion to a variety of different types of cancer such as mammary, ovarian, prostate etc. ⁣
2. Advanced glycation end products - another compound that is formed during high heat kibble production. These compounds cause oxidative stress and inflammation your pet’s body which will in cause many of the common “age related” diseases we see such as diabetes and arthritis⁣.

So what’s the take home message? ⁣

Do your best to incorporate as much whole fresh food into your dog or cat’s diet.⁣

Any small change will goes so far in helping to reduce cancer risk and offsetting chronic aging conditions.⁣

If you must feed kibble (and that’s ok!) feel free to connect with us so we can provide you with natural ways to help reduce cancer risk and toxin exposure.⁣

Did you know that the use of one round of metronidazole can wreak havoc on your pet’s microbiome for a minimum of 4 weeks?! 💩💩💩💩⁣

So why are we still handing it out like 🍬candy 🍬 when it comes to acute diarrhea?!⁣

Here are a few things to try before we reach for the metronidazole. ⁣

1) Fasting (dogs only) — give your dog a break from food for 6-12 hours to allow the GI tract to settle (not for puppies or cats).⁣

2) Bland diet — introduce a whole food bland diet for 48 hours (smaller meals given throughout the day) - Try some cooked white fish and sweet potato🍠 🐟 .⁣

3) Use a good quality probiotic that is formulated for the GI tract of a dog and cat (this is not the time to bust out the greek yogurt).⁣

4) HERBS 🌿 ! There are many amazing herbs with medicinal properties that soothe the GI tract and stop diarrhea and intestinal spasms.⁣
Try these:⁣
- Marshmallow Root⁣
- Slippery Elm⁣
- Goldenseal⁣
- Cramp Bark⁣

My preferred mode of delivery is via glycerine tincture because you don’t need to give it with food (dry herb in a capsule), it is very concentrated and it doesn’t contain any alcohol.⁣

Please remember that these suggestions are for acute diarrhea when the pet is bright, eating, well hydrated and otherwise healthy! Please always talk to your vet before making any medical decisions for your pet!⁣

What are some of your diarrhea hacks?! ⁣
Tell me below ⬇️⬇️⬇️⁣
