My non-Mennonite dad is visiting, and he & Mary brought a Texas watermelon. This demands a salty, rich, deep-fried, traditional Mennonite accompaniment.
Here, in all it's glory, is my MIL's large recipe. Try it, and tag me in the pics!
*READ COMPLETELY BEFORE STARTING*
Roll Kuchen
First: Pour a 1 1/2 inch depth of oil in heavy-bottomed pot or skillet.
DOUGH:
2 cups heavy cream (NO substitutes!)
1/2 cup milk
6 eggs
2 TBSP salt (yes, that much)
4 tsp Baking powder
6 cups AP flour, more for rolling
Mix wet ingredients, sift in dry. Stir just until no dry spots appear - dough will be very soft, like cookie batter.
Turn out onto WELL floured surface, of dough liberally with more flour. Roll to about 3cm thick, cut in any shape and cut a slit in the middle.
Heat oil to 375F
Fry dough in batches, 1 1/2 - 2 minutes each side
Serve warm with watermelon and dip in Rogers Golden Syrup.
Enjoy!

Wow. So much work on the acreage (removing dead/dying trees this week) but it's worth it.😊

Cantebury Bells; 8 days after cutting.
It's fully open, I haven't deadheaded, recut, changed water, zilch. I used floral preservative in the water, initially. Really does extend the vase life.
Local flowers for the win!

Canary Brilliants. Not great for cutting, but a real stunner in the garden. A Mother's Day gift from me to me.😂

October 6, and the first real killing frost in the garden. It was about the same time last year.
As a grower, I've been enjoying taking the time to get to know *my* garden. What grows well here, how soon I can plant, and how late I can harvest. I'll definitely be planning for more successions next year!
Enjoy your day, everyone.🤗
