PSA: Small dogs should be trained too! 📣
This is foster dog Bob. He can be reactive sometimes, but he is learning to ignore these barking dogs in the background (sound on).
What I'm doing here is asking him to do an acceptable behaviour to prevent him from reacting. As with all training techniques this doesn't work for all dogs, but for those who it does it's a great way of teaching them that they can do other more rewarding things in the presence of triggers. It creates a healthy habit of focusing on the fun things you as a handler have in store for the dog!
The key is watching out for potential triggers and timely asking the dog to do something for you, for example to sit.
Towards the end of the video, I lure Bob into a spin. This is amazing because severely reactive dogs are often not capable of learning while so close to their trigger (in this case, dogs). It shows a very promising future for Bob!
