🇨🇦 It's Canada Day! 🇨🇦

We'd like to share a happy reminder that of you have a pet, please keep them home today. We promise that they will not be sad to miss out on the crowds of people with quick, unpredictable movements and overwhelming, overstimulating smells.
They will be much happier at home.
*Service Dogs are trained in these circumstances and are not who I'm referring to.*

🎆🎇 Fireworks are beautiful for humans, but most dogs (and other pets) will not enjoy them as they can be terrifying and traumatizing. Here are some pro tips from Fear Free Pets to help your pets feel safe and secure during the fireworks; my girls will be safe in their crates, inside the house, with windows closed, and calming music on to help drown out any scary sounds from the outside world.

🇨🇦 Happy Canada Day Weekend! 🇨🇦

While enjoying the celebrations of the long weekend, let's take a moment to think of our pets and what they would prefer.

Would they rather go out to a busy environment filled with the sounds, smells, and quick unpredictable movements of other humans, or would they prefer to stay at home, relaxed and cool, inside the house?

Can they hear the fireworks at home? Is there a way to help them feel calm, safe, and secure during fireworks?

Fear Free Pets has a wonderful infographic about how to keep them as relaxed as possible during fireworks. Take a look and let us know which things your dog would prefer!

Enjoy your long weekend, and help your dog enjoy theirs too! 🎆🎇🇨🇦🐶

Sometimes, other peoples dogs become a part of our family, too.

Yoda was clearly a well loved boy and there's no better way to honor him than to help support the SPCA by buying a Yoda Cone in his memory.

Yoda was the most loyal customer, visiting us every single day for the last 3 years. Always with a smile and eager to finish his cone in just 2 bites. He was also our resident housekeeper as he would do the rounds in the evening cleaning up any dropped ice cream.

We love this guy with all of our hearts and in loving memory of him our ‘pup cones’ are now ‘Yoda cones’. Yoda cones are $1.00 with all proceeds donated to the SPCA. 💕

An important part of bite prevention is know what your dog is trying to communicate.
If you spend time with dogs, it would be really beneficial to learn more about their body language.
Lili Chin has many great visuals available in different languages at no cost. Here is one:

"National Dog Bite Prevention Week: Promoting peaceful coexistence with our canine companions."

Does your dog talk to you?
Maybe he does (especially if he has some husky in him, like my girls do!)

But generally speaking, dogs don't speak the same language that humans do.
So how do we know what they're trying to say?

Well, since we're asking them to live in our world, it's up to us humans to learn how dogs communicate, and to be respectful of what they're trying to tell us.
This is especially important when it comes to bite prevention.

The communication that comes from a dog can be so subtle, and unfortunately it is often overlooked or ignored altogether.

Dogs tell us things all day every day, it's important to learn what they're saying so that we can listen to them. This can mean the difference between everyone staying safe, or someone getting bit.

If you don't know about dog body language, Lili Chin has created this very famous "cheat sheet" of dog language, as well as a book and many other animal related infographics.

I will also share the link to her assortment of infographics here as well: https://www.doggiedrawings.net/freeposters

National Dog Bite Prevention Week: April 7th – 13th 2024
"To reduce the number of these injuries, we want to utilize this week to educate both adults and children on bite prevention and responsible dog ownership."

Today's focus is education and management regarding children and dogs.
What does management look like when it comes to dogs and children?
It looks like:
🐾 Keeping your dog and your child or baby separated at all times, unless you have a very focused eye on both of them and are within arms reach of them.
🐾 Setting up success stations to ensure your dog and baby cannot reach each other, especially at any time you are not 100% focused on them.
🐾 Learn about how dogs communicate, what their body language means, and always listen to any warning signs your dog is giving.
🐾 Always allow your dog to have a safe space to go to where your baby or child cannot reach them, and never allow your child to go to them, especially when they are sleeping. A startled dog can react in a fraction of a second and could injure your child without meaning to.
There are many more ways to ensure safety of both your child and your dog. This article discusses more about how to manage your dog with babies and children, with many infographics and links to Family Paws for more free resources.

The vision of your baby growing up with your dog as their best friend is such a beautiful one. Ensuring everyone stays, and FEELS safe is even more beautiful.

"National Dog Bite Prevention Week® takes place during the second full week of April each year, and focuses on educating people about preventing dog bites."

One of the best ways to prevent a bite is to be proactive. Even if your dog doesn't have a bite history, it's a really good idea to muzzle train them anyway, in the event that they may need to wear one.
For example, if your dog is injured, they will very likely be reactive to someone coming near them, even if they have never shown any sort of nipping or biting behavior before.

Stressful situations can make a dog react in ways you'd never expect them to. It's a good idea to at least have introduced them to a muzzle in case one ever needs to be used for whatever reason.

There are other, every day, normal reasons a dog may wear a muzzle, too, as shown in this image.
The Muzzle Up Project is an incredible resource for muzzle training your dog, as well as a great start to learning more about destigmatizing muzzled dogs.

Keep those dogs and humans Happy and safe!

The BCSPCA is inviting professional dog trainers in Canada to participate in an online study titled “Survey of dog trainers in Canada” that aims to provide a better understanding of the dog training profession in Canada, including the services offered, training methods, and beliefs about dogs and dog training. The findings of the survey will be made available by publication in an open access peer-reviewed journal.

This research is carried out by Drs. Protopopova (PI) and Cavalli (Co-I), from the Animal Welfare Program, Faculty of Land and Food Systems, University of British Columbia; in collaboration with the BC SPCA (British Columbia Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals). If you have any questions about the study, you may contact Dr. Cavalli at [[email protected]](mailto:[email protected]).

The privacy and confidentiality of survey participants will be strictly protected, and identifying information (such names or emails) will not be collected.

If you are a dog trainer in Canada, we invite you to complete the survey and share the link with other trainers in your network. We ask organizations connected with dog trainers to share the link with trainers in their network.

It can also act as a riser to pups who want out of their fences.
This is a great tip and reminder to keep those pups of ours safe in their own yards... even if it means even more to shovel!

As a Pet Page in the Military Town of Petawawa, we will be taking a moment to not only remember our CF Members who have served, and continue to serve, but also the animals who have historically helped during war.
Veterans Affairs have some great resources on their website, including but not limited to Tales of Animals in War - 2023 edition, Service in war and peace, an activity booklet for children.

"The Tales of Animals in War 2023 stories highlight the 75th anniversary of United Nations peacekeeping.
Take Time to Remember is an introduction to Tales of Animals in War.
Every year since 2006, six animal characters from the Remembrance Clubhouse have presented a fresh edition of Tales of Animals in War, to introduce young readers to the concept of remembrance in a non-threatening manner."

Thank you for your service.

Have you ever considered the peace of mind that microchipping your pet can bring?

This is an amazing event for those wanting their pets microchipped, but without the big price tag!

A microchip is a reassurance that if your pet gets lost, without their id tag, anyone who finds them can take them to any vet or shelter, do a quick, painless scan with an electronic wand, and find all of your pet's contact information to get them home to you as quickly as possible!

At only $30, without even having to leave your vehicle, taking the trip to Orleans in Ottawa is worth that reassurance!

🚗🐶 DRIVE-THROUGH MICROCHIPS! 🐶🚗

Have a pet that needs to get chipped? Now is the perfect time, as you will also be supporting our Village dogs. Microchipping is only $30 per pet!

Swing by our microchip clinic at Forest Valley Animal Hospital (1803 St Joseph Blvd #109) in Orleans, and get your pet chipped without even leaving your car!

All pets are welcome, and no appointment is necessary.

Did you know that there is a low cost spay and neuter clinic just a few hours away in Brockville!
One of our admin's puppies was spayed through their rescue via this clinic and it is a pretty neat set up:
You arrive at the drop off time, stay in your vehicle and join the queue of cars. When the staff is able, they come to your vehicle, get your information, and take your pet inside.
At pick up time, it's very much the same: you stay in your vehicle in the queue and give them the paper they gave you at drop off, they bring out your pet, tell you any relevant information, and off you go!
It's a beautiful area to explore for the day, as well, while your pet has their surgery!

For costs and more information, please see their website.

It's almost time for Halloween activities and most people know that taking your dog around all of the different sights, sounds, smells and animatronics is not the best idea.
But what if you have a service dog?
Here's food for thought on Service Dogs being exposed to all things Halloween:

Halloween season is here! And you know what that means: haunted houses and Halloween events. Many people find these things to be fun and exciting. I sure do! Our local amusement park has a big Halloween event that starts every September and it’s always a blast. It’s scary, and actors jump out to...
