Guess how many babies there are! The reproductive cycle of scorpions is quite unique. Heres how it works…

When scorpions mate, they do a romantic slow dance where the male will grab the claws of the female and try to guide here towards a flat surface. Once they find this surface, the male will drop a spermatophore which is then picked up by the female for successful fertilization.

After many months, the female gives live birth to a brood of babies, which then climb onto the mother’s back for protection and warmth while at a very vulnerable stage. After their first molt, they disperse from the mother’s back and survive on their own!

As time goes on, they continue molting, growing in size, and developing their adult colouration. Being able to witness this whole cycle is quite a sight to see!

Send this to a friend so they can experience it too!

Incase you wondered, this amazing arachnid is known as the Malaysian Forest Scorpion, or Heterometrus silenus.

Featured here is Sicarius gracilis, also commonly known as the sand spider, is a very unique species that lives in sandy, hot, arid environments. This species buries itself under the top layer of sand and waits for prey to wander over it before launching out from below and capturing it.

Their behaviour is quite interesting to watch, at least when it comes to feeding. Their lightning fast reaction time means they can emerge from the sand and capture prey in a split second! Once captured, they simply cover themselves back up by digging a small pit, and using their front legs to push sand over top of them becoming invisible to other insects passing by.

Although their venom is quite significant, they are unlikely to bite and their inability to climb smooth surfaces makes them quite easy to contain and take care of.

Would you keep this awesome species?

This is Scytodes univittata (Formerly known as Scytodes sp. Orange) it is a species of spitting spider originating from Italy. This particular one is an adult female, and as seen in the last photo, she is currently carrying around an egg sac! This means the next generation is soon on its way.

But wait, it gets more interesting than that! This species hunts its prey using a sticky mucilage that it spits from its mouth, similar to how velvet worms hunt! This sticky compound glues its prey in place while it makes its way over to eat it. Scytodes univittata is an arid species that is also able to be kept in groups, and is pretty well harmless venom wise making it a great choice for a communal display!

A few weeks ago I walked in on something exciting. My Heterometrus silenus (Asian Forest Scorpion) that I paired some time ago, gave birth to a brood of little scorplings! Now just some weeks later, the babies are off her back and on their way to living their own life. Nature is truly amazing!

Can you guess how many babies there are?
