Grief is not something to avoid or to try and escape
or to get through as quickly as I can.
It is an essential process of healing that allows a
person to move forward with deeper understanding
of what matters and how to live well.
In this way is much more than a shattered life.
It is a gift to help them become more fully human.

One gray afternoon by the sea , a man passed a woman sitting next to a large German Shepherd, curled up in a blanket on a small bed.
His name was Max, 13 years old. Time and illness had robbed him of his strength, but not his soul. His owner told me that he had always loved this beach: the sound of the waves, the salty smell of the wind. it was his happy place.
Every day now, she rolls his bed to the same spot where he used to run, so that he can still feel the sea air on his face. She hopes that this place he loves so much offers him a little comfort and joy, now when he needs it most.
Observing them, the man understood that love lies as much in simple gestures, patience and presence, as in big moments. This is true loyalty, shared on both sides.

They found her lying in the grass, clutching the same pink flowers she used to chase as a puppy.

Her name was Luna.

For 16 years, she brought sunshine into a life that had forgotten how to feel warm.

She was there the day Emma lost her baby.

When Emma came home from the hospital, empty-handed and hollow, it was Luna who curled up at her feet and didn’t leave her side. Not for hours. Not for days. Not even to eat.

Luna understood what no one else could: grief doesn’t need words. It just needs presence.

Over the years, they grew older together.
Emma’s hair faded from auburn to silver.
Luna’s muzzle turned gray.

They spent every evening in the same garden — the one Emma’s daughter would’ve played in.
Instead, Luna ran through it, laid in it, and filled it with love.

But one morning, Luna didn’t follow Emma outside.

Emma found her already in the grass, resting peacefully in a patch of sunlight.
Her eyes were closed. Her breathing was still.

And nestled between her paws were the pink wildflowers Emma had placed on her collar just the day before.

Emma collapsed beside her, whispering through tears:

“Thank you for staying. I would’ve never survived without you.”

She held her like she once imagined holding her child — with the kind of love that doesn’t die, even when the heartbeat does.

In the Levant, around 12,000 years ago, the Natufian culture marked a pivotal moment in human evolution, from nomadic hunters to early village life. Among their most touching legacies is a burial discovered in modern-day Israel, where a woman’s skeleton was found gently resting her hand on a puppy’s remains.

This grave, uncovered at sites like Ain Mallaha, is among the earliest archaeological proofs of emotional bonds between humans and dogs. Unlike wolves, the animal had physical traits—shorter snout, smaller size—suggesting it was a domesticated dog, not just a tamed wild creature.

What makes this discovery remarkable isn’t just its age, but its message: even in the Stone Age, dogs weren’t just used for hunting or protection—they were already companions. The grave’s careful arrangement implies affection, respect, or perhaps even spiritual symbolism.

As agriculture, permanent dwellings, and social rituals emerged, so too did one of the most enduring human relationships in history. The woman and her puppy, side by side in death, speak to a truth that’s lasted millennia: dogs weren’t just at our feet—they were in our hearts.

Is there life after life for the pets we love and who pass on?
Is there a heaven for our pets?
Where do they go when they die?
How do we know they are all right?
These are the questions that vex our souls.
These are the questions I'm asked, often through the tears of the heartbroken.
It all has to do with what one believes deep down about death.
What applies to humans and their spirits and soul applies equally to our animals.
If one believes death is the absolute end of life. Period. Then it is so for people and pets.
But as an animal chaplain and pastor, I say this: the great and total love we give our animals, our beloved pets, and the total and great love they give us, do not end with death.
The love lives on in them and in us.
Their spirits are with us forever, and we know that.
We carry them in our hearts forever.
They do reach out to us, and we need to learn how to be still and receive what they are telling us.
Is “forever love” heaven? is “forever love” a hereafter?
Yes, I believe so
It does not lessen the deep pain. Nor stop the longing to hold and feel them again.
But what a comfort to know they are alive still!
They are just in a different form.
