A wise farrier once told me “I won’t comment on what the other guy did or didn’t do before me, because I don’t know what it looked like when he started.”

These are words that have always stuck with me. They are truly wise.

So many times bodywork practitioners post images of horses “before” and don’t realize or care that most of the heavy lifting and the hard stuff was done by the accomplished teams before them. Often these horses have already come so far, and that work and those practitioners should not be discounted and disrespected.

Be kind: To one another. To the horses. And to the horse owner who only seeks what’s best for the horse.

🌟DID YOU KNOW🌟 the guideline for chronic back pain recommends spinal manipulation as a form of treatment, including for older people? Spinal manipulation is a highly skilled form of hands-on care, often delivered by chiropractors, osteopaths and physiotherapists.

Hello friends!

The total solar eclipse is just around the corner, and just about everyone is ready to see the once in a lifetime event. We are seeing some mixed information about pet/wildlife safety.

Contrary to what some may read, the sun itself is not any more dangerous during the eclipse. The reason protective eye wear is recommended for humans (who wish to observe the eclipse) is because many of us will be staring directly at the sun that day, which is something we typically avoid.

For our pets, and outdoor wildlife, that day will be similar to any other day. Our pets don’t stare at the sun, so there is no need to keep them indoors on April 08 for any extended period of time. They may notice the change in temperature, but it is unlikely they will exhibit any unusual behaviour.

The eclipse can be more unsettling for birds. The dimming of the sky can mimic behaviour at dusk and during early storm formation, so some birds may demonstrate a wind-down behaviour and there may be less activity in the sky during the peak eclipse. Once the sky returns to normal, so does their behaviour.

If you are purchasing eclipse glasses, please make sure they meet these criteria. For additional information about the eclipse please see:
https://science.nasa.gov/eclipses/safety/

For a list of approved solar-viewing goggles please see:

https://eclipse.aas.org/eye-safety/viewers-filters

It is not safe to watch the eclipse through the lens of your smartphone - it can damage both your phone camera and your eyes. Try this instead:

Safe watching our friends!

Wondering what it takes to be an Animal Chiropractor? 🔎

Here’s a p*ek for what it takes for Chiropractors👀

🎓A Bachelor’s degree in a related field is often the first step (My undergraduate degree is in Kinesiology!)

📚 Then a Doctor of Chiropractic (DC) degree from a recognized institution. This intense program teaches the intricacies of anatomy, biomechanics, physical rehabilitation, physiology, and chiropractic care. I went to the CMCC, located in Toronto!

🐴Specialization in Animal Chiropractic: After obtaining your DC, specialize in animal chiropractic through an accredited program ( 👋🏼). This additional training focuses on the unique needs of animals.

✍🏼Certification and Licensing: In Ontario, you must be certified and licensed to practice. This involves passing exams and meeting the standards set by the College of Chiropractors of Ontario, including specific requirements for animal chiropractic.

📖Continuing Education: Staying updated with the latest techniques and research ensures the highest level of care for our four-legged friends.

🔍 Whether it’s helping a dog walk without pain, enhancing a horse’s performance, or simply ensuring our pets are living their best life, animal chiropractors make a difference every day.

*Doctors of Veterinary Medicine are also able to be trained in spinal manipulation for animals*

Come meet me at Fox Hollow Pet Boutique and help raise funds for Martha 💙

🌼 YOU ARE INVITED 🌼

We invite you to join us on Saturday, April 20th from 11PM ~ 4PM for a fun & informative day at The Fox Hollow Pet Boutique. We’ll be offering:

🐾 Nail Trims by Kendra from Kendra's K9 Cuts $15 per pet with all proceeds going to the fundraiser 🐾

🐾 Meet & Greets with Northumberland County Animal Wellness Practitioners:
🌱Catalyst Animal Chiropractic
🌱 Little Brown Dog
🌱 Pawsitive Animal Wellness

🐾 Lots of free giveaways & opportunities to win fabulous raffle prizes!

🐾 Bake Sale with lots of delicious options!

🐾 In-store promotions & special discounts!

🐾 More exciting announcements to be made!

The “Why”:

Sadly, the state of unwanted pets is at a crisis level. Animals are being surrendered, abandoned, and dumped at an alarming rate. Our good friends at K9 FIT recently heard about an urgent situation. Knowing that time was of the essence and resources are very limited they stepped up to help Martha, a senior pug mix. They have committed to healing her physically & mentally through the her medical issues and her extreme anxiety and fearfulness. Only a few weeks in, and Martha is starting to thrive not just survive. The enormity of the financial burden they’ve taken on to help Martha is something we want to help with 💛

We also as a business believe in helping our community and what better way than to do so with our overpopulation of unwanted cats right here in Northumberland County. Our local shelters and rescues are overwhelmed and we are trying to ease the burden by helping where they are unable to. This means trapping, spaying/neutering and finding safe places for them to land. The situation is overwhelming but we need to start somewhere 🙏🏻

Our fundraising goal is a lofty 🌟 $3,500 🌟 We know times are tough so any amount, large or small, will make a difference. We hope that with our community’s help we can get there 💕

Mark your calendars and please show your support for some of the displaced animals of Northumberland County 🙏🏻

It’s shedding season, which means...

🌸🐾 SPRING is coming, and it’s time to ensure our furry friends thrive!

💡Some quick tips to assist in the changing of seasons!

🌻Check for Allergies: Just like humans, pets can suffer from allergies too. Watch for signs of discomfort, itching, or respiratory issues and consult your vet for treatments.

🪳Flea and Tick Prevention: Warmer weather brings an increase in fleas and ticks. Make sure your pet is up-to-date on their flea and tick prevention treatments.

💉Update Vaccinations: Ensure all vaccinations are up-to-date, as pets may come into contact with other animals more frequently during spring (contact your vet for more information).

🎀Grooming: Many pets shed their winter coats in spring. Regular brushing can help manage shedding and prevent mats.

☀️Outdoor Safety: If you’re taking pets outside more often, ensure your yard is secure and check for hazards, like toxic plants or standing water that could breed mosquitoes, as well as other hazards.

⭐️How do I know if my pet may benefit from Chiropractic Care?

💡Here are some signs that your pet might need chiropractic care:

🐎 Limping or Uneven Gait - Notice your pet favouring one leg, or their walk just doesn’t look right? This can be a sign of joint or spinal issues.

🐈 Difficulty Climbing - Struggling to get up stairs or into the car? It might be more than just aging.

🐄 Changes in Posture - A hunched back or a reluctance to maintain normal posture can indicate discomfort.

🐑 Decreased Activity Levels - Less interest in play or walks could suggest they’re in pain.

🐕 Visible Discomfort - Whining, shaking, or reacting negatively to being touched in certain areas.

🐇 Changes in Behaviour - Aggression or withdrawal can be a sign your pet is dealing with discomfort.

🌿 Chiropractic care does not replace regular Veterinary care and it may be recommended to have a Veterinary examination before commencing Chiropractic care

Generations of Trailblazers: My Mom & Gran🪽

Swipe ➡️ to journey through time with two incredible women who shattered glass ceilings.

My Gran: In an era when women were often working in the home, she carved her name in the history books as one of the first female Justice of the Peace in Durham Region. Her courage to step into a male-dominated field paved the way for countless women after her, proving that talent knows no gender.

My Mom: Inspired by her mother’s tenacity, my mom took the torch and ran with it, becoming the first female Nuclear Operator at the Pickering Nuclear Plant. She built on the foundation laid by her mother, not just breaking barriers but also mentoring the next generation of women to dream big and aim high. She also graduated with a Bachelor of Technology in 2020, the same year I completed Chiropractic school.

🌍 On this International Women’s Day, I honour these two remarkable women who taught me that with perseverance and courage, no goal is too audacious. They were not just the first women in their respective careers; they were pioneers who changed the narrative for everyone who came after them.

To my Mom and Gran🪽: Thank you for being my inspiration. Your legacy is not just in the paths you’ve blazed but in the love and wisdom you’ve passed down. Here’s to the women who dare to be the first, making it easier for many more to follow.

💥Snap, Crackle, Pop💥

Have you ever wondered what happens during a chiropractic adjustment and how it impacts your body and your pet?

👉 What Is a Chiropractic Adjustment?
A chiropractic adjustment, also known as spinal manipulation (or extremity manipulation), is a procedure in which trained health practitioners use their hands or a small instrument to apply a controlled, quick force to a joint.

⭐️Benefits:

1. Pain Relief: Studies have shown that chiropractic adjustments can significantly reduce pain in the lower back, neck, extremities and even reduce headaches.

2. Improved Mobility: Adjustments may increase range of motion, helping you move more freely.

3. Decreased Muscle Tension: Patients often report less muscular tension and an overall sense of well-being post-adjustment.

🔆 What to Expect?
During an adjustment, you might hear a popping or cracking sound. This is simply the release of gas bubbles from the fluid surrounding your joints.

🌻 Chiropractic adjustments are generally safe when performed by a licensed and trained professional. It’s important to have an open discussion with your chiropractor about your health history and any concerns you may have. Informed consent is an important part of an assessment before receiving care.

🌟 A holistic approach to your health and your pet’s health includes regular exercise, a balanced diet, and proper medical/veterinarian care. Chiropractic adjustments can be a valuable part of a comprehensive health plan.

Meet Frankie 🐶🐾

Frankie is a 4 year old Field Labrador Retriever. Her summers are BUSY, as she participates in dock diving 🛟🐬

When Frankie first came to me last year, she was feeling pretty good! Her owner wanted to get her checked out due to the intensity of her sport, as she had a sore hind leg the previous season and was looking to keep her in tip top shape.

Frankie’s treatment consists of adjustments, soft tissue release, cold laser therapy and some stretches for homework📚

Frankie now comes for regular tune ups to assist in her staying mobile and active in her sport!

Follow the adventures of Frankie and her sister Palmer .fp 😍

People often ask me - well what animals do you treat!?

I primarily work with horses and dogs. I had the opportunity to treat this beautiful girl, Camaro, last year. When I was contacted to treat a COW 🐄, I was pumped! Her owners reported that she had been having issues with weight bearing on one of her hind limbs, and gait issues. The Veterinarian had ruled out anything sinister in her case.

After her assessment, I had found some restrictions and muscle tension in the hind end and we proceeded with some instrument assisted soft tissues therapy and adjustments.

I was thrilled to hear that a few hours after the visit she was weight bearing squarely in her hind end, for the first time in 3 months!

DM me if you are having any MOOOOvement issues with your animals!

“You don’t know what you don’t know”

⬆️ one of the mantras that I live by in my practice

We are always learning and it is impossible to know EVERYTHING, and in this line of work, there is grey area! This is why some Chiropractors may use different words to communicate and different techniques (more on that later).

When you meet a practitioner who seems to “know” the answer to everything without any discussion or research, It’s probably a good idea to have some questions.

Why?

We should always be striving to learn more and better ourselves for us and our animals. It is impossible to know everything.

When an animal owner or a client asks me a question and I don’t have a 100% solid answer, my replies are usually one of the following:

“It depends”

“I’m not sure, let me look into it”

“I don’t know, let me do some research”

“That sounds a bit out of my wheel house, let me refer you back to your veterinarian”

“That sounds like something out of my scope, let’s revisit this with your medical doctor”

I know that being willing to continue evolving as a professional in my practice means that I am always able to provide the highest level of care to animals and people.

DM me to learn more about animal or people chiropractic care and everything involved (psst psst 🐱…it’s not just adjustments)

Such a wonderful initiative by a wonderful person 🥰

Such a wonderful initiative by a wonderful person 🥰

Hi everyone! My name is Ashley😊. I’m excited to finally launch this passion project that I have been working on behind the scenes for quite a long time now. As many of you know, we lost 4 of our special needs fur babies Diesel (hind end paralysis), Max (blind), Meeka (hind end paralysis) and Crouton (Manx Syndrome kitten, incontinent) within the year 2022/early 2023💔. These devastating losses changed me forever, but I knew I had to find a way to keep going and continue advocating for special needs animals in their memory.

Following in the footsteps of some other amazing rescuers who have supplied wheelchairs at no cost to owners and pets in need, I wanted to offer similar resources in our area. I wanted to be able to cater to various special needs like our animals had, as well as senior dogs that we love so much, and that is how Determined as Diesel was born!💛

Determined as Diesel will provide care packages at no cost for those in need who have gone through changes such as paralysis, incontinence, loss of vision, and conditions related to old age. This is a loaning program, where the items can be used for as long as needed, and any reusable items can be returned once finished with them to pass on to the next animal in need. We will have items such as wheelchairs, help ‘em up harnesses, reusable and disposable diapers, p*e pads, booties, halos for blind dogs, ramps, pet steps and strollers available at no cost. I will put together a care package based on the individual needs of your pet. Donations of new or gently used items in this list are greatly appreciated, and any monetary donations will go towards purchasing supplies that are needed for a specific animal that we may not have available at the time of need.

We will cover the Northumberland, Quinte, Trent Hills and Durham region areas of Ontario. We are fully volunteer run, and unfortunately will not be able to ship large items out, but if you live outside of these areas and are able to pick up you’re more than welcome 🤗.

We are not here to give any medical advice whatsoever, and vet consent is needed for all mobility devices. We work closely with many amazing veterinarians and rehab facilities that we can refer you to for any medical guidance that is needed. These care packages and mobility devices are not to take place of veterinary care and will not be provided without written vet consent.

Thank you all for your support in this new journey, and to everyone who has helped me along the way! I’m excited to be able to help animals and their family’s in times of need, and hopefully make our babies at the rainbow bridge proud!🥹🌈💛

Let me tell you a bit more about myself…

(The 1st photo is from my wedding in the mountains last year ☺️ ➡️ the rest are self explanatory 😆)

I currently live in Quinte West, Ontario and am a Chiropractor who works with people and animals. I graduated from the Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College in Toronto and earned my animal certification through the Veterinary Chiropractic Learning Centre in Central Ontario.

I grew up in Southwestern Ontario (Perth County 👋) on a pig farm, my mom bred and showed Australian cattle dogs (as you will see in the pics to follow 🐶) I started riding at 5 years old and have always had a passion for working with animals.

My main goals with care are to manage pain and improve performance in all animals that I treat - from helping your senior horse with arthritis management to your puppy for wellness checks.
