I am saying this with deepest apologies but unfortunately Fox and the Hounds Dog Care will no longer be able to provide our services to the dog community of Edmonton.

As many of you know I have devoted much of my life to studying, training, walking and caring for dogs. Starting Fox and the Hounds Dog Care my goal was to improve the lives of dogs and their families through exercise, positive reinforcement and socialization. I have a very high standard for our services and the devotion we give to each and every dog.

I am so proud of the team we have built but with more upcoming staffing changes with some walkers expanding their families, some of our existing walkers moving to part time and my ongoing back injury we can no longer continue to provide our services with the same standard as we have been and therefore will have to make the difficult decision to close our doors.

I really appreciate all of your support throughout the years and understanding my goals to provide your dogs with the best care possible. Thank you for allowing us the opportunity to grow in breakable bonds with your pets and getting to be a part of their happiest moments.

When searching for a pet care service please remember that not all businesses provide the same standard of care or practices. Please make sure to be diligent about your research in whether the company is force free, positive reinforcement based and what protocols they have in place to ensure the safety of your pet. I will continue to respond to emails and DMs as quickly as possible to help with this transition.

It’s the dog days of summer 🐶☀️💕
The hot weather is upon us and we want to remind you of our summer weather protocols and how we ensure your pups stay safe with us.👍🏻
Water 💦 - On every adventure we make sure to carry multiple litres of water with us during the walk for the dogs, with extra water in the vehicles.
Air Conditioning ❄️ - Anytime your dog is in our vehicles we leave the AC on high for the pups to stay nice and cool. When returning to the vehicles we make sure to cool off the vans before letting any any dogs inside.
Cooling Down 😅 - for dogs especially heat sensitive we suggest having them wear cooling vests during their walks or we can give them a quick hose down prior to their walk to help keep them cool.
Shade 🌳 - We try our best to stay on shady paths and take breaks in the shade when needed. If safe we will take them for a dip in the river to cool off!
Pet First Aid Certified 🩺 - We are pet first aid certified and know how to prevent overheating and look out for signs of heat stress.
30 degrees + 🥵 - We will try and move all walks to the morning if suitable or will cancel afternoon walks and can provide quick p*e breaks to let your dog out to relieve itself instead.
If your dog is especially sensitive to the heat please talk to us and we can switch your pup to the cooler morning hikes or shorten them when needed.

Are you a dog lover? Want to spend more time in the outdoors on the beautiful trails of the Edmonton River Valley? Want to learn more about Humane Dog Training?

We’re looking for a new dog loving member to join the pack!

🐾Who we are:
An Edmonton based dog care business that focuses on improving the lives of dogs and their families through exercise, safe socialization and overnight care. We provide small group dog walks (up to 4 dogs) through the river valley and private neighbourhood walks. We work with the dogs on their basic training (positive reinforcement training ONLY) as well as off leash recall. We are here to ensure each dog gets the exercise and mental stimulation they need while staying safe.

Must have a full licence and access to a vehicle
Must be willing to work in the outdoors in any weather

We sure are going to miss the snowy trails but who doesn’t love mud season?! 🙈🐾🌦

The trails are melting quick which means lots of mud.

Please remember to leave us out a bucket of water or hose and some towels at drop off so that we can get your pup looking like new no matter how much fun they had in the mud during their trail adventure. 🙌🏼

Meet Tonjra 🐾

Tonjra is one of our amazing walkers and pet sitters. Having 3 dogs of her own (along with a couple of scaly pets) and previously working at dog daycares and vet clinics she has been the perfect fit for our team. Tonjra is extremely knowledgeable about animals and training them and they instantly love her. 💕

Tonjra says this is the perfect job for her because she loves being able to enjoy the outdoors AND hangout with dogs at the same time. 🐶 Tonjra lives by the motto “do what you love and you'll never work another day in your life". When she’s not walking dogs you can find her working on her beautiful creations at ✨

We are so lucky to have Tonjra as part of our team.

Starting off 2022 by putting our best paw forward. 🐾

Is one of your New Years resolutions to make sure your dog gets more exercise and socialization but not sure where to start? Let us help!

1) email us at [email protected] with some info about your pup and what you’re looking for. 🐶

2) We will set up a “meet and greet” for you and your pup to get to know us. Here we can help assess what kind of service may be best for your dog. 👍🏻

3) Your dogs first walk! Each dog is different and some dogs take time to get used to the process that’s why we find it is very important to work on creating a close bond with your pup based on trust and are happy to take the time to ensure this happens. Pretty soon your dog will be by the window excitedly awaiting our arrival. 🤗

4) Enjoy some down time with your dog now that they are on their best behaviour after some good exercise and socialization. 😌

Coco and Gina all bundled up for their frosty winter adventure ❄️🐾💫

As we continue to see very cold temperatures remember to keep a close eye on those pups for signs of discomfort in the cold and be prepared for the weather! Each dog is different and although some dogs do ok in the cold some are quite sensitive.
Ways to prepare your pup for the cold snap or snowy days ❄️:
1. PAWS:
Paw balms are a great way to help prevent snow from clumping to the paws and provide an extra protective layer from cold snow or salty sidewalks. Booties can also be a great way to protect your dogs paws by keeping them warm and dry.
2. COATS:
Some dogs have ample amounts of fur and can easily tolerate cold temperatures, however, some dogs don’t and may need a sweater or coat to help their body stay warm.
3. WATCH FOR SIGNS:
In cold weather watch out for signs such as lifting paws, shivering, reduced movement, pale gums etc. If your dog is exhibiting any of these signs move them into a warm space, dry them off, wrap them in a blanket and slowly help them warm up. If signs continue consult your veterinarian.
4. LENGTH OF EXPOSURE:
We continue to shorten walks when necessary to minimize the length of time dogs are outdoors in cold temperatures. We will continue to move morning walks to warmer hours where possible and cancelling walks if temperatures reach below -30 and offering short p*e breaks instead. Please keep an eye on your emails for updates on the status of your pups walks.

When you realize that there’s only 4 days to Christmas! 🤪🎄💫

No matter what holiday you may be celebrating this year we hope that you have a safe and wonderful end to 2021! 💕

Please note we still will be operating Monday- Friday, however, will be offering fewer walks so we suggest requesting walks as early as possible to ensure a spot. 🐾

Lastly we wanted to send out a reminder that this time of year vet clinics see many emergency visits due to pets getting into things they shouldn’t. Please remember to keep a close eye on those fur babies and keep anything tasty or tempting far out of reach. 🐶

Meet Chantelle ✨💃🏼🐾

Chantelle is one of our awesome walkers. Everyday she shows up with a big smile and warm heart even on the really cold days. Chantelle’s favourite thing about the job is that she gets to spend everyday with such amazing dogs! She loves that she gets to help provide a safe environment for them on their walks to learn and play. Outside of work, you can find Chantelle spending her time hiking and rock climbing.

Chantelle has been the perfect addition to our team and we are so happy to have her. 💜

Let’s talk about Muzzles!

Many people see muzzles as bad and view dogs that wear them as “bad” dogs. The truth is that muzzles are a great for all sorts of dogs in all sorts of situations. Wearing a muzzle doesn’t mean the dog is bad, it means that they have a responsible owner that is using non-harmful tools to help ensure the safety of others or their dog.

Frankie here has been walking with us since a little pup and is a very sweet girl that loves all people and dogs. Frankie is a Poodle crossed with an Old English Sheep Dog, which were originally bred to herd farm animals. Like many herding dogs that don’t live on farms this behaviour can be seen in other unwanted instances such as towards fast moving objects, like bikes.

We recently decided, along with her amazing dog momma, to get Frankie comfortable with wearing a muzzle to ensure that we can continue to work on helping her refocus these behaviours with the confidence that she will not hurt anyone or any bikes.

Frankie is so happy that she still gets to enjoy playing with all her pals and has been doing so much better at refocusing her attention to us when bikes are passing. We’re so proud of her and wanted to share her story with you and help reduce the stigma around muzzles.
