Winter is u”paw”n us!

With winter weather here it may mean a bit of extra care for your pets. As they age the cold season can be harder on them for a few reasons:

🐾 Their paws. As pets age their paws can get more sensitive to cold and what they could have done years before may hurt them now. Paw balm, booties or just regular old vaseline can all be great barriers to the cold pavements/cement, salt, or prevent snow build up.
🦴 Their bones. Arthritis particularly can be worse in the cold months and slipping on ice or trotting through snow can make them a bit sore. If you notice your pets becoming more stiff or limping please reach out!
🐕 Their coats. Older dogs and cats can have some endocrine diseases that develop that can cause them to have thinner coats or lose some hair. Things such as hypothyroidism, cushings disease, allergies, hyperthyroidism and even genetics can cause some coat changes that may make them lose heat faster than before. If you see some coat changes it may be time for some blood work and an exam. Smaller breeds, younger pets, pets with short coats and older pets may benefit from a sweater or coat during colder temperatures.
⚠️ Toxins, foreign bodies and GI indiscretion. This is not age related but a reminder that anti freeze, chocolate, raisins (dogs), lilies (cats), and mistletoe and are all toxic if ingested. If this happens please call ASAP as these can be emergencies. New toys for kids and pets alike and holiday decorations can be swallowed when played with and get stuck which may require surgery to remove. While not toxic ingestion of rich foods can also cause GI upset and can lead to issues like pancreatitis so keep the treats and gravies away from the pets. If they do start vomiting with or without diarrhea please call and we can decide if they should be seen!
❄️ Winter activities. Please be safe skating, skiing, sledding, snowshoeing, ice fishing, skijoring or however you choose to enjoy the snow this season and carry some emergency first aid in case of injuries. Your kit should include some gauze, vet wrap, bandage tape, and a collapsable bowl for water to clean.
🥰 Enjoy the holiday season and please reach out to us!
