Heya Followers 👋

It’s long overdue that I update you all on why we’ve been so quiet over here…

We added a member to our pack (pictured below being closely monitored by big bro, Odin).

I will be taking some time off to enjoy leave with my new future pup-handler, but will try and update you all from time to time.

The future looks bright for Atlas Canine!
Once we are back in action, we will be offering even more services than before, and new and improved programs for our clients.

See you soon 🐾

Did you know 6 minutes is all it takes for a dog to overheat in a hot vehicle and face lifelong or fatal consequences? ☀️🥵 Pets can still overheat even when the windows are down, or if the car is parked in a shaded area.

Our best advice is to not leave your dog in the car - take them with you or leave them at home with plenty of water and shade. They will happily greet you when you return! 😊

A lot of dogs want you to know this -

Instead of a fancy collar and bed? They’d rather have a fenced in yard - even if it has to be small and home made - so they can have off leash time to dog and dig.

Instead of daily neighborhood walks? They’d rather you drive to a dirt road and put them on a 30ft line and let them zig zag and smell as long as they like

Instead of twice daily meals in a bowl? They’d rather have food through enrichment activities that stimulates their brain and their nose.

Instead of basic obedience training? They’d rather have purpose driven training that feeds their genetic make up and needs AND helps them survive and thrive in todays world.

Instead of a human wanting something from them? They’d love a human wanting to understand them better.

Instead of focusing on perfect “heels” and “stays”? They’d love to learn how to be resilient and less stressed and cope with the outside world and our expectations.

Instead of harsh punishments and corrections? They’d prefer proactive management and rewards for good decisions.

We can’t change everything about the lives our dogs are forced to live with us in, but we can make these kinds of changes and see a huge improvement in their quality of life and wellbeing.

There’s two types of dogs …

The Lily’s of the world:
”Who tf are you and where tf is my Mother?”

The Ripleys of the world:
“You smell like treats! I like treats! You’re my best friend!”

Can you guess who’s, who? 😏

Extreme low temps headed our way ❄️:

It’s important we be vigilant when it comes to the safety of our pups during their outdoor outings this weekend- the temps will be dangerously low, so layer up, leash up and keep house breaks short and sweet

Some activities to keep the cabin fever at bay:

SNUFFLE MATS- stuff them full of tasty treats (these can be home made as well- think rolled up towel with treats hidden within, blankets stuffed into a laundry basket with hidden treats and toys stuffed inside… )

FROZEN CUPCAKE TIN- fill in with pups favourite treats, don’t ne scared to get creative ! Yogurt, bone broth, peanut butter… what’s in your fridge- have fun with it

DURABLE CHEWS- some of our favourites are stuffed kongs and benebones

A SNIFFARY- scatter and hide treats throughout and assist pup in finding them- you can really have fun with this one

SLOW FEEDER/LICK MATS- again get creative here you can smear with peanut butter, cheese wiz, mix up kafir with sardines (yummy eh?!) - freeze or give soft

Mental stimulation is just as beneficial (if not more) so don’t feel like you’re depriving your dog if you miss a day or two of walking!

Everyone stay safe and enjoy the time at home with your furry friends

Important reminder

PLEASE be mindful of the upcoming DEEP FREEZE to arrive - ONLY take your dog out on leash - even in a fenced yard. "Friday evening, an arctic airmass will combine with strong northwest winds to give bitterly cold conditions. Windchill values of MINUS 35C to MINUS 40C are expected to develop Friday night and will persist into Saturday morning before beginning to moderate Saturday afternoon as winds subside."

As exciting and fun as Christmas can be, keep in mind your dog doesn’t understand what all of the hustle and bustle is about- they look to you for comfort and reassurance.
It is our job to set them up for success!

Happy Christmas Eve!

If you plan on gathering with friends and/or family this holiday season, there are a number of things you can do to keep your dog (and your visitors) safe.

Remember, there is nothing "wrong" with your dog if you need to manage amid all the chaos; that is 100% normal.

Check out this week's blog post for more info on how you can implement each of these strategies: https://rescuedbytraining.com/2022/11/14/holiday-gathering-tips/

I’ve spent the last couple of months working with this absolute squish of a boy 😍
Onyx is one of those dogs I could take home…

His mama has put in the work- the dedication to her pup was evident from day one. She took the advice I gave and put it to work, without hesitation.
So proud of them both and proud they chose me to help guide them, on their journey together as partners!

Dog licks are often thought of as doggy kisses. But, it’s actually something to take a step back and notice. And could sometimes be considered a, “Kiss to Dismiss” (more on that below). These licks do trigger some questions that may seem a bit silly to ask in response. Something like, “Describe the licks for me. Fast, slow, and then does the dog move away?”
“Is it a full tongue or a little bit?”
“Full tongue lick or quick flick?”
“Is the child sitting and the dog approaches or vice versa, what level of mobility does the child have, is food present or remnant?

There’s many questions! But, these questions help us gather valuable information to help us understand what the dog may be communicating. At Family Paws Parent Education, we want to help parents consider and recognize that dog licks may not always be what we think they are, “affectionate kisses”, or indications of “love,” but could have other meanings. We refer to this as “Kiss to Dismiss”. If you are curious of these doggy “kisses” and if they are a “Kiss to Dismiss”, ask yourself,
🐶 Is your dog in need of space? (what just happened? Did your baby crawl closer to your dog?)
🐶 Is your dog in need of space and there is a reason they may choose not to move? (example: comfy spot, resource, pain)
🐶 Does this licking deter closeness or lead to an increase in space?

Thank you, Steve Bishop of Bishops Gate Dog Training for this graphic! Steve is also a Family Paws Parent Educator.
We do not recommend baby and dogs interact as shown in these illustrations. Never allow your baby to crawl up to or freely explore your dog in this way.
