We have eggs!

To everyone on our Fall list patiently waiting for eggs the young 🐓 have started laying! For now only half of them are laying consistently and the eggs are still quite small (and so cute ☺️). We will contact everyone near the end of September to set up a schedule for pick-ups and deliveries.

If you would like to eat delicious eggs from happy pastured hens that free range and lay at their leisure, we have a few spots for the Fall list. Mostly because Brent can’t stop buying laying hens 🤦🏼‍♀️. Haha

Hope everyone is enjoying the last little bits of summer!

Cheers!

From the coop to the banana bread!

We bought a Costco pack of bananas and couldn't eat them all before they went bad. We hate to waste, so we decided to make some banana bread. I usually batch bake these and freeze them. They keep great for a few weeks in the freezer and thaw perfectly. We have a slice for breakfast with yogurt or an afternoon snack with with coffee or milk!

I love how the dark rich yolks of our pastured eggs give the banana bread that golden color! Yum!

Do you have a favorite banana bread recipe?

Egg cartons!!!

Hello friends, we are in desperate need of egg cartons... one day our basement in overfilled with them and the next we are out 🤷🏼‍♀️. To give you an idea, we currently have ~50 hens that lay almost everyday. That’s 28 cartons a week! So if you have egg cartons (12s/18s/plastic/pulp) we will gladly take them off your hands!

We are a till taking names for our Fall delivery list, send us a message if you would like to be added.

Also, have you every seen Easter chicken eggs (teal, blue, olive). Stay tune, we should have some available soon. Can’t wait to see how pretty those will be on the counter!

Day 3!

And the 🐥 are doing great! We don’t play around too much with the heat lamps or the thermometer. We “listen” to the chicks: if they huddle right under the light, it’s too cold. If they hang around the outside of the brooder, it’s too hot. These littles look quite comfortable moving back and forth at their leisure.

We try not to hold them too much, but it’s hard to resist when they are so cute! Can’t wait to see the yard filled with birds hanging in the trees and taking care of all the pest that attack our garden! 🐓💕 let us know if you want more 🐤 spam haha!

Lots of questions about our egg delivery list the last week so here it is the scoop:

We are getting 🐣 this week! Which means we will be doubling our egg production and adding quite a few spots to our egg delivery list for September/October. Prior to that we are all full - sorry.

As always, the new ladies will have full access to our ~16 acre property. Their diet consist of bugs, grass and berries from the bush. In the summer, they also get to eat from our organic garden! Guard dog Ghost keeps them safe from predators and with all this room they don’t have much competition for peking order.

Happy hens = tasty eggs!

If you are interested in being added to the list, please send us a message! Once the new 🐓 are laying 🥚 consistently, we will call everyone.Due to the volume of eggs, we will adding weekly delivery to Winnipeg!

Well our seedlings aren’t performing as well as would have hoped... so far we have 21 🍅 plants thriving and 14 🫑 plants. It was tough just finding seeds this year, so we had to buy what was available. It’s pretty obvious that seed quality makes a big difference. How are your seedlings doing?

Well it’s not often this big guy is inside the house... he honestly doesn’t fit! This good boy was coyote hunting to protect our hens. It seems he injured his leg when chasing them away. We’re giving him a few more days before we head to the vet for a second check. For now, we’re trying to keep his mouvement to a minimum to help him heal. Still managed to wake up us barking when deer were in our yard last night! 🤦🏼‍♀️

Finally! In typical 2020 fashion our chickens have had a rough patch. Predators, coop problems and then molting has cause low egg productions. We sincerely apologize to our regulars for cut or skip orders 😬.

All is well now 🤞🏼and we are able to fill regular orders and a few extras here and there!

The new hens are laying consistently larger eggs now woohoo! All eggs will be $4/dozen in 2021.

We won’t be able to take extra orders for Christmas baking as we already have lots of to fill. But if you would like some eggs in 2021, and you are not on our regular list, send us a PM and we will let you know when we can fill it!

As always, contactless pick up is available at the homestead or deliveries once a week in Selkirk (possible other locations based on distance).

We hope you have a cozy Christmas and wish you lots of adventures in 2021!

Please message us if you would like some $4/dozen.

Additionally, we are starting to take names for people who would like to get on our regular egg list for the fall. We have added 50 hens to our flock. They should start laying regularly by end of Fall. Let us know if you would like to get on that list!

Good morning! Hope you are enjoying your breakfast as much as we are. Yolks are getting more orange as the hens range the yard and eat more grass. We eat eggs every way but hard boiled is by far my favorite! How do you eat your 🥚?

Don’t worry they settled and are spread out evenly throughout the brooder now! Not too hot, not too cold! Soon we will separate them as they have different feeding needs.
It was raining hard when we picked up the chicks from Peavey Mart The employee literally took the shirt off of his back to cover the box and bring them to our vehicle! 😳 💯👌🏼

We are still selling eggs but currently having a hard time keeping up with the demand. Our hope is that the ladies start laying a little more now that they are roaming the yard many hours a day and enjoy warming weather.

We are getting 50 🐥 in the next week and we will have many more eggs to offer starting next fall. We appreciate our regular egg customers and are hoping we will be able to be more regular with deliveries and availability. We will also be able to offer fresh eggs to more people.

Hope everyone is keeping safe and enjoying their time as home with their family!

Cheers! 🐓 🌈 🥚

The most wonderful time of the year: starting seedlings!

This year we want more Roma tomatoes and peppers for canning! We are lucky enough that our main living room window is huge (12’X4’) and South facing. It gets so warm in the afternoon. Perfect for seedlings!
We will fill two tables with seedlings by the end of the week! We prefer to use the larger containers so we don’t have to transplant as often. Plastic film helps to create a green house effect and gives these seeds a strong start!

Since we’re self isolating we can watch these grow.... 🌱 🔜 🍅 + 🌶

What is your favorite thing to grow in your garden? Leafy veggies, squash, root vegetables or flowers (we suck at growing 🌸)?

Hello all!

As we will also be participating in social distancing, our last egg delivery for a few weeks will be tomorrow. You are also welcome to come pick up.

Please message us if you would like to reserve some... they will go quickly 🐔🥚🍳!

The Covid-19 situation has helped shine light on another benefit of homesteading... although we don’t support the excessive purchasing of food supplies, it’s nice to know that we have preserved enough food to last us a few weeks or more! We are still enjoying frozen veggies and berries from our garden, canned pasta sauces and salsa and frozen fish and meat gathered during the summer!

Homesteading is a great way to evaluate your consumption of goods. Perhaps this is a great time to reflect on your family’s consumption... how much food do you eat in a week... how much do you throw away?

We hope you are able to enjoy some peaceful time with your family in the following weeks!

Cheers!

Clean up day for the chickens!

Today the ladies decided to hang out outside - in the deep snow 🤦🏼‍♀️ - while their bedding was being changed. We considered doing the deep litter method over the winter but we didn’t collect enough brown/leaves in time. Maybe next year! For now, our ladies enjoy fresh hay every few weeks.

If you would like to get some eggs, we will start deliveries again next week. You are always more than welcome to pick up as well!

Why buy pastured eggs from a homestead?

In Canada, about 85% of eggs come from caged chickens (only 15% in enriched cages). Although we understand why large/industrial farms raised their laying hens in cages including pecking, disease and cannibalism, we are proud of the true FREE-RANGE life our hens experience. In Canada free range has many interpretations, some are strictly indoors.

Our ladies are truly pastured, they have access to the outdoors everyday, even in snow (which these crazy gals don’t seem to mind hehe). They eat grass, bugs and in the winter they receive a lot of frozen treats from our organic garden. They roost in trees around our yard and have very little stress! They lay eggs at their leisure ~ 1 egg per chicken per day!

Marilyne’s father built a beautiful warm and spacious coop which is fully insulated and fitted with heating lamps for the cold winter night.

If you want to get eggs for Christmas baking we have a few spots left for Dec. 5th and 12th deliveries.

$4/dozen and delivered at or near the Comp. Pick-up is always available 1053 Cloverdale Road!
