This week I won the infomercial award at my networking group because I talked about catastrophizing. We often answer the question “how are you”, with “busy”. We sometimes manufacture urgency in ourselves and others and it’s a type of self-created stress resulting in anxiety. I challenged members to remove the word busy from their vocabulary for one month and see what happens. A great replacement is saying “my life is full”. "I'm like a spellcheck for as****es." One of my client told me yesterday.

I regularly help clients edit letters and emails that they want to make sure sounds okay before sending out. Let's face it, people can come off sounding like as****es sometimes when writing an important letter to an ex or boss or someone whom they may have a challenging relationship with. Often it's because they are too close to the situation and emotions are involved.

A lot of people are talking about the Marie Kondo show where she instructs people on how to organize their homes by only keeping things that bring you joy. I watched the entire season and I have much respect for Marie and in some ways use similar methods when I help people organize their homes and lives. However, I feel there can be much confusing surrounding what joy is. It's defined as a feeling of great pleasure and happiness. Perhaps you felt joy when you purchased an item but not longer do and it's time for it to go. Or, perhaps it will bring you joy in the future even though it doesn't now. While joy is great, functionality, space, and need also play a huge role when it comes to organizing your space. However in my opinion, some of the most important things to consider is why it got that way in the first place and learning the skills needed to keep it organized. I work with my clients to figure out those things and stay with them to help them organize so they can learn how to keep it that way once we've completed the job. This way, going forward they will be able to keep it organized. Some of the people I help the most with organizing are people who:

had a loved one pass away and are finding it hard to get rid of their loved ones things.
busy individuals who can seem to make the time to do it on their own.
seniors or those who are downsizing.
people who deal with anxiety about the disorganization and can't seem to tackle it alone.
