Through our equine-facilitated programs, we strive to provide a space where youth can feel seen, heard, and empowered to find balance and resilience in a rapidly changing world.

Championing the mental health of first responders . . .

I recently received a gift from a client—a signed copy of "Portraits of an Emergency" by Daniel Sundahl, a stunning compilation of art exploring the themes of trauma, resilience, and healing which serves as a powerful testament to the emotional resilience of first responders. The accompanying note spoke to the profound realities first responders face and said "despite the nature of some of the images, while potentially upsetting, they are a reality that many of us cannot afford to shy away from if we want to help."

The client also shared something that left me both humbled and inspired:
"Words cannot express how much I have appreciated the care and sensitivity you and your team have shown our folks . . . meeting us where we are has been invaluable. I believe that you have shown them that they matter, that people care about how they feel which is what all of us really need to know."

This gift reaffirmed why I feel so honoured to work with first responders. These courageous individuals live with the kind of trauma most of us can only imagine, bearing witness to life’s most challenging moments—and still showing up, shift after shift. I cannot do their job. But what I CAN do is be their champion. I can create spaces for them to feel seen, heard, and valued. My team and my horses can stand beside them as they navigate the heavy mental and emotional toll of their work.

To every first responder reading this: your mental health matters. You matter. Seeking help is not a weakness; it’s a strength. Whether it’s reaching out to a peer, a mental health professional, or joining a wellness program, know that there are people ready to walk alongside you.

Let’s continue to raise awareness of the importance of mental health for those who give so much of themselves to keep our communities safe. Please take a moment to thank a first responder today. You never know the battles they’re quietly carrying.

We are grateful for this calmer morning as everyone begins to dry out and continues to survey the damage from the storm that swept through this weekend. We appreciated all the messages of care and concern from everyone who reached out to check on us and our herd. We spent many hours ensuring our paddocks held up through the deluge and supporting our herd through the storm, but we’re happy to report that everyone stayed safe and dry despite the weather’s best efforts!

We know that not everyone was as fortunate, and our hearts go out to those who are still digging out from the storm. We’re thinking of you and sending all our positive energy your way. Thankfully, we have some brighter days ahead.

A Heartwarming Day at River Haven Farm

We had the immense pleasure of hosting a special group of seniors from The Residences at Belvedere. This time with the seniors was a wonderful opportunity to give back to our community and share the magic of our farm with some very special guests.

The day began with a warm welcome and introductions to our gentle, loving horses. The seniors enjoyed interacting with the horses, experiencing the calming and therapeutic presence these magnificent animals offer. The joy and smiles on their faces were truly heartwarming.

After spending some time with the horses, we also visited our blackberry bushes. The seniors had a fantastic time picking fresh, juicy blackberries, enjoying the sweet taste of summer right from the source. It was a delightful experience filled with laughter.

We wrapped up the visit with lunch, where everyone gathered around to share stories. The sense of community and connection was palpable, making this day truly special for everyone involved.

At River Haven Farm, we believe in the power of nature, animals, and community to bring joy and healing. We are grateful for the opportunity to host such a wonderful group and look forward to more heartwarming visits in the future.

We are thrilled to share Crossroads Hospice Society's heartwarming post about their recent visit to River Haven Farm! We had the honor of providing essential grief support to young grievers. Witnessing the healing power of our equine partners in action was truly inspiring.

Grief can be an incredibly challenging journey, especially for young hearts. Through our unique environment and programs, guided by a clinical counsellor, we offer a safe and supportive space where those deep in grief can express their emotions, find comfort, and begin to heal. The bond between humans and horses can be a profound source of solace, and we are grateful to be a part of this important work.

Thank you, Crossroads Hospice Society, for entrusting us with such a vital role in your mission. Together, we are making a difference in the lives of those who need it most.

Here’s a peek into one part of our daily routine:

🌟 Balanced Diet: Our horses enjoy a carefully balanced diet, rich in essential nutrients to keep them healthy and happy. From low sugar hay and a variety of supplements (plus a slice of apple or carrot here and there), we ensure they get all the vitamins and minerals they need.

💧 Hydration: Clean, fresh water is a must! We keep a close eye on their water intake, especially during hot summer days.

🍃 Supplements: We incorporate premium supplements to support their overall health, including joint support and digestive aids (a big THANK YOU to Mad Barn for their team of nutrition experts to help us with that!!).

For mothers who have lost a child the pain is indescribable. But through compassionate support, healing becomes possible. Being in the presence of compassionate souls and our gentle equine guides, as well as others who are experiencing this profound loss, offers solace amidst the storm. Our grief support workshops are led by a Registered Clinical Counsellor and Certified Equine Facilitator and participants are held in a safe space of warmth and healing.
