FUN FACT!
Did you know. there is a few breeds of horses that can grow some pretty impressive mustashes!
Gypsy Vanner, Clydesdales, Shires, Friesians, and Haflingers are known to flaunt their facial hair. It is not a boys club only either, Mares, Geldings and Stallions alike can all have them.
Similar to a cat's whiskers, horse mustaches are tactile and helping navigate their environment. These whiskers are no laughing matter when it comes to finding food and avoiding those pesky, non-edible plants. Especially during winter, a mustache can be a real lifesaver, helping horses locate grass under the snow.

Did you know what a CBC test (complete blood count) looks at?

1 -Red bloods cells and their composition- They help us tell if the horse is anemic.
2 - White blood cells
White blood cells are responsible for fighting microorganisms that constantly challenge your horse’s immune system such as bacteria, fungi, or viruses
3 -Platelets - Low Platelet count means the blood can’t clot and could continue to bleed
4 - PCV is a measure of hydration status- Helps us tell if the horse is dehydrated

When is it important to run a CBC test ?
When a horse is not doing right, any case we are worried about infection, if there fever of unknown origin, pre-anesthetic, , monitoring a case progress, horses on long term medications, such as previcox, prascend, etc.

Here at Align Equine we have the ability to run CBC test in house which makes for faster results!
A CBC test can be run separately or in combo with a Chemistry test -Running both test together gives us more of a complete picture of what is going on with your Equine partner

*NOVEMEBER SCHEDULE*
November is here along with the cold weather. We are keeping busy here at AEVS but we like to remind clients, everyone likes to be able to feel their fingers and toes. For any non-emergent appointments we ask that there is somewhere warmish to work. A garage or shop is perfect we don't need anything fancy. If you have any questions feel free to call or text us at 403-740-6828.

INTRODUCING........ JENA!!!!!!
If you have called our office in the mornings you may have noticed we have a new voice on the other end. Jena was raised outside a small town of Everett ON. Spending as much time as she could on her Opa's farm is where her love for animals began for all shapes and sizes. Jena started riding at a young age and her passion for horses only grew with that leading her to go on to manage a couple different horse farms before making her way into the veterinary world where she has worked at a few vet clinics in both large and small animal. Jena along with her husband Brandon took the adventure of a lifetime and moved to Alberta in 2023 where they have come to love the life they are making here. Her dreams of having a funny farm get bigger as her family of pets grows. Her funny farm includes ducks, horses, dogs, cats, mini donkey and she hopes to soon add cows and maybe a bunny or two! At AEVS we are so grateful Jena has joined us on this crazy ride and she does her best to keep us on schedule. Although Jena may not be on the road with us she is an integral part of the team, if you want to talk to Dr. Cheryl you have to make it through her first.

October has been Tech Month in Canada!
Registered Veterinary Technicians are a huge part of the backbone of any veterinary clinic. They are a vet's right hand (and usually the left as well!). RVTs are equivalent to nurses in human medicine, except they are trained in even more fields! RVTs are able to everything a veterinarian can do, with few exceptions. They are not allowed to diagnose conditions, prescribe medications or do surgery. In reality most techs know just as quickly as a vet what is happening and what needs to be done. If any of you have worked with any sort of doctor, you know we are scatterbrains on a good day. An RVT also has to be like a Boy Scout - always prepared for whatever the veterinarian will need. This is even more difficult on the road because if we don't have it, we can't get it from another place in the clinic.
