I am so grateful to have a 90% full plate at the moment!

Thank you for the hard work you're doing to create a community of friendly, respectful dogs and dog handlers. The progress I'm seeing is so impressive!

With that being said, I have room on my schedule for only two more pups.
In March I can take on one new in-person pup and up to two virtual clients.

"What if my dog couldn't experience these freedoms just because I was too afraid to drop the leash?"

- my client Emily, giving me a much needed reminder tonight.

My own puppy is working on his recall. It's not been 100% lately so I've been hesitant to drop the leash and let him practice.

We were chatting about how amazing Bailey's recall has become and she very kindly reminded me why we work so hard with our dogs. We practice sit, stay, come, not just to keep them safe, but to allow them to experience the pure joy freedom brings.

I'm so grateful for my amazing clients!

The basis of any behaviour is how your dog feels. Behaviour is a symptom of how your dog is feeling, so if you don't like the behaviour, examine why your dog feels the way they do in that moment.

Is your dog barking at things he thinks are scary?

Let's work out why they're feeling tense, anxious, or fearful. Has he been exposed to that sound before, and reinforced for calm behaviour?

Let's observe when they feel excited, engaged. Does your dog jump up because you engage with her when she does so?

Communicating with our dogs takes time to get the hang of. Every day look for one thing your dog "told" you. Just as we teach dogs our language, we can also learn theirs.

Does your pup whine? Is it annoying? That's okay! The thing to understand is, dogs use their voice as a way of communicating something to us.

When you find your dog whining, ask yourself:
- is there a chance he might be injured?
- are we dealing with separation anxiety?
- is she bored and simply seeking my attention?
- is he saying hello to me or another person/dog?
- are there other body cues that could tell me more?

Your dog is not giving you a hard time, they're having a hard time and they're trying to tell you something.

What do we do about dog whining?
- first of all, make sure all your dog's needs are met. Check the water dish, think about if it's dinner time yet or not, and if you've had your walk.
- play impulse control games
- engage your dog with a toy or game
- for boredom whining, sometimes ignoring the whining can help extinguish the behaviour
- train your dog to be comfortable being left alone

Your new puppy is going to become an important part of your family, but that can’t happen without help from the other members.

Have a family meeting and go over what the puppy's schedule will look like, who is responsible for which days/times/types of puppy care, and check in with each other frequently. Decide which cues you'll use and make sure everyone is clear on the differences.

MYTH: "Dogs are pack animals, some behaviors occur because my dog is trying the be the alpha or dominate me."

Actually, the study that sparked this myth has been debunked many times over.

The truth? Your dog wants to explore the world around them. They live in the moment. They are opportunistic and will go after what it is they want. Your dog isn't stealing food because he needs to eat before you do, he just likes chicken.

Your dog isn't going through doorways ahead of you to assert his dominance over you, he just wants to go outside and sniff!

What kind of assumptions have you made about your dog? What human-isms have we accidentally imposed on our dogs? How can we see the world through their eyes instead of ours?
