Paisley excitedly gobbled blueberries 🫐 on our evening walk last night. And we happily let her, as we know they haven’t been sprayed with chemicals, or harvested in unethical ways.
Even when ingredients are the same - they aren’t always equal. As both consumers and pet owners it’s important to consider where our ingredients come from. Foods produced in other countries can have much less (or non existent) regulations and food safety standards. Considering how lax the regulations are here, in regard to pet foods, that’s pretty scary. Additionally, in some countries - employee standards are significantly less, so the labour conditions used to raise and/or grow the ingredients can be shocking. And finally, sourcing locally made can have a significant environmental impact, as the ingredients have to travel far less distances 🚚.
Ultimately, look at the labels when purchasing your pets treats and foods (and your own too). Local can often cost a bit more, due to the factors touched on above, but that’s a small price to pay to give our pets a healthier & longer life. And, as insignificant as it may seem, our small purchasing choices can have big impacts on global labour conditions and the health of this planet we all call home 🐾🌏.

An extremely beneficial food source to add to your pets diet - cranberries are classified as a superfood. High in antioxidants, vitamin C and fibre - daily supplementation of cranberries may aid in immune system & UTI support, as well as aiding in digestion and many other health issues.
Cranberries contain a large amount of antioxidants - including proanthocyanidins. Known as “offence and defence molecules” because of their strong antioxidant benefits, some researchers claim they’re 20x as potent as vitamin C, or E. Research has shown the proanthocyanidins can help avoid UTI’s. In addition, they are extremely helpful in supporting your pets gut microbiome and immune system.
We use Grade A cranberries grown and processed right here in Nova Scotia. In fact, they come from Terra Beata Cranberries who also double as our neighbour!

You can also try this at home with your Boost - sprinkle it into water and then freeze into cubes, and then add some more to the cubes before serving. Or, simply moisten a lick mat and coat with Boost🧊🐶

Our sweet potato fries are a great way to reward your dog at the end of a long week (assuming they’ve been good, but isn’t that a given 😝). Crunchy, flavourful and nutritious, these are a favourite of both Samson and
Paisley. Our only problem is now we can’t have french fries ourselves without being harassed by dogs who are obviously deprived 🙄

Okay, we’re joking…… somewhat.
It’s true that many dogs do enjoy milk-bones. They are the Oreo of pet treats - mass produced with the cheapest ingredients possible. BUT, at least Oreo’s have to pass the standards set for food made for human consumption. Milk-Bones don’t have to worry about such standards because the bar is set lower (in fact almost non-existent). Made with cheap fillers, non-identifiable meat sources, high levels of sugars and preservatives - they may not be harmful when given occasionally, but certainly aren’t a healthy option.
Instead of Milk-Bones, look for treats made from limited ingredients, made from whole foods and from identifiable protein sources. Additionally, when possible, look for locally made treats, as there is an environmental impact in shipping products thousands of kilometres.

This past weekend we saw our friend Luna and got to meet her new sister Phoebe 🐾

One such dog was Tako, a rescue from Cuba and an advocate for .rescue. APAC rescue sick, injured and abandoned cats and dogs in Cuba (where there is estimated more than a million homeless animals).

Our freeze drying process allows us to maximize our treats nutritional content & flavour, but we also choose ingredients that are nutritionally dense. Today we look at our pork treats. Pork is a great treat option and not only for the benefits we listed in our reel. For dogs with allergies - pork can be a great alternative, as it is less likely to cause a reaction when compared to other animal proteins. Pork can sometimes have negative connotations because of past issues with trichinosis (a parasite infection). However, this is extremely low risk in Canada now.
