Stopped by the Honey Bee Research Center in Guelph today to check out the eclipse.
The most interesting thing for me was that when it got dark the frogs in the near by wetlands instantly began to be very vocal and then suddenly stopped as the light came back.

I had the opportunity to visit Jerry Jerrard of Kawartha Lakes Honey with my colleagues from NOD Apiary Products Ltd.
Jerry has been experimenting with overwintering nucleus colonies and banking queens.
Unlike traditional wintering sheds the bees are not locked in and they have access to fly out during the winter for cleansing flights. They also do not tightly cluster as the room is kept warmer than a traditional over wintering shed.
A decade ago I participated in a beekeeping mentorship program offered by Farms at Work and Jerry was our mentor. Jerry has come a long way from being mainly a honey producer to become a serious nuc producer.
