Something as seemingly simple as getting you and your horse where you’re supposed to be, when you’re supposed to be there can be a stressful experience at the horse show. Add in poo stains and long lunging line ups - it’s a recipe for overwhelm.

If next season you want to:
💰Save some money by taking on grooming yourself
⛱️Improve your self-grooming experience by learning how to manage it all with a little more ease
🏆Groom like a pro
😌Master time management and manage your nerves
🧳Pack everything you’ll need, and know what to do with it
💪🏻Learn pre and post show care that will keep your horse feeling (and performing) their best

❌Trial and error is stressful and at the expense of your horse show expereince.

🙅‍♀️And you can’t rely completely on your trainer as a resource for support.

From prepping at home in the weeks leading up to the show, to bathing and unbraiding, and post-show care for your horse, I’ve got more tips than the comment section of that video I posted of me getting left behind over a vertical.

For anyone who needed to hear this today. Hang in there. We’re all riding the highs and lows of this

If you’re being put through your paces, know you’re not alone. We’ve all been there, and if someone hasn’t been there… they haven’t been doing it long enough.

It takes a lot to keep this horse-girl life moving in the right direction and it reminds me of one of my favorite quotes:

“Even the steps backwards are all a part of the dance.” 🫶

Everyone knows to “watch for red flags 🚩” when shopping for a horse, but what exactly does that mean???

I’m going to do a series of posts that look at the top 5 red flags when buying a horse and rate them on a scale of “Not an issue” to “Run away!”

In the meantime; check out this blog post

So, you’re ready to buy your first horse? How exciting! But before you get swept up in the excitement of bringing home your new partner, it’s important to make sure you’re not missing any warning s…

Common RED FLAG: conformation faults. 🚩👇

I see this all the time on those “ how to buy a horse” checklists but honestly, I’m not confident I could navigate a conformation issue on my own. Even with all my years of experience.

There seems to be an expectation that when you are looking to buy a horse that you should be some sort of expert. And that just confuses me.

🚗When you’re buying your first car, how much did you know about good gas milage, cost of replacement parts or insurance?
🏡When you bought your first home, how savvy were you with mortgage brokers or negotiating terms with the seller?
📊When you do your taxes, do you rely on an account to maneuver through deductions, credits and deadlines?

The first time you do anything, you rely on others to help you, teach you and guide you.

Eventually, you learn. And the next time you have to buy a car, you know a few better questions to ask, you can negotiate better with a new home and maybe one day you take on doing your own taxes (that one I’ll never know…).

When buying a horse, there is NO REASON you would know what to do the first time around.

💰And with a significant purchase like a horse, you need some guidance, and to work with a professional you trust.

Comment BOOK and I’ll send you a link to my ebook So You’re Going To Buy A Horse? where I’ll walk you through the process as your first steps towards being a confident and informed horse owner.

Adult ammy’s are like ducks.🦆

Did you ever hear that duck analogy? The one that paints the picture of the majestic looking duck… actually, swan.. yeah, let’s use a swan.. 🦢

The swan who appears to be effortlessly floating through the water, but below the surface, their legs are paddling frantically to move them to where they need to be?

Yeah, that’s most of us.

Behind every professional show photo or idyllic sunset ride is an overworked, stretched thin equestrian who’s juggling a lot, making sacrifices, has competing priorities and burns the candle at both ends in order for it all to work.

Many of us couldn’t do it without some help – a partner, parents, or a community that all leans on each other.

But here’s something that I REALLY wish I had learned earlier…

Enjoy the thing that makes you happy, when it’s happening.

Allow yourself to be in the moment and happy when the happy is happening 😆

There are very few times in life will all the stars algin.

When exactly will you’ll have extra money, spare time and energy to do it all? You might never.

So just do the thing. And know that while you’re enjoying the heck out of it… another part of your life might be going up in flames 🔥 … but hey… like Oprah said, you CAN have it all, just not all at once.

If you made it this far, leave me a comment or a 🦢 if you any part of this made sense.

This is what I wish more people knew about buying a horse.

1️⃣ The time commitment is just as substantial as the financial one. I’m at the barn 4-5 days a week, and I have a leasor that rides 2x a week so help me. If you’re crunching the numbers to see if you can make it work, you should also be considering how your life will accommodate the time you’ll spend at the barn.

2️⃣ The PPE is not a pass/fail type of exam. The purpose of the PPE is to reveal what sort of risks may be present with the horse. All horses, *all* will have something that is revealed in the pre-purchase exam. The point is to be able to make a decision whether or not you are comfortable with those findings.

3️⃣ The bulk of your expenses are in the care and maintenance, not the purchase price. From board, farrier work, training, maintenance, vet bills (regular and the unexpected), its where the majority of your money goes. The purchase price will be the cheapest part of owning them.

4️⃣ Your ROI (return on investment) is (most commonly) in the expereince you get having horses in your life. The physical, mental, emotional and social returns you get from having a horse can’t be underestimated.

5️⃣ It’s worth it. Well, here’s the thing….this one is up to you. Horses require compromise and sacrifice, only you can decide if what you give to them is worth what you get in return.

I believe it is. 🩶

“If it changes your life, let it.” 🫶

I love this so much, it’s a reminder that the smallest things could change your life (not to be dramatic or anything)

- to lease the horse 2x a week
- to teach the up/down lessons while on mat leave
- to go to the show
- to buy the horse
- to be willing to be new at something again

I had no idea where my adventures in being an adult amateur would take me, but here I am… horse owner, back in the show ring and author of two books helping others find their way back too.
