Today we are going to talk about the importance of grooming your pups so they don’t get matted! First of all matting can be really bad for a variety of reasons. It can stop your dogs ability to regulate temperature, it can create hot spots and wounds, and it can stay damp after baths and being outside so it becomes gross and nasty. Here are a couple things you can do to prevent it! First is brushing! Brush your dog with a slicker brush head to toe, then use a metal comb all over your dog to get closer to the skin. If you can do that without snagging the fur, they’re good to go. Next is bathing… if you bathe your dog at home blow dry them. If you let them air dry, the hair becomes compacted. The last is grooming. Regular grooming is needed for dogs whose hair grows continually. Depending on how matted they are will depend on how much they can leave on. Have a good rest of your Tuesday!🐶🐾.

Are you in the thick of it with puppy chewing? Well I have a little tip for you that will help with soothing gums and a way to help your little land shark to have better oral hygiene!
So I was in the same position you were where my pup just was constantly chewing on EVERYTHING! My sock, chairs, fingers, toys, whatever she could sink her sharp teeth into. I found that freezing a carrot in the freezer and then giving it to your pup helps soothe pains from teething, dental and oral health (helps gently scrape off plaque buildup) and overall is a great way to keep your pup busy! Try it!

Let’s talk about sleep…
We all love a good nights rest, and the best way to do that is to prepare yourself and your pup for a successful night. The first thing to do is make your puppy’s crate an appealing place to be. Line it with a soft inexpensive blanket or two (beware that wool blankets and mats can be ripped apart and cause choking) and make it so that there is a cover over the whole thing. Establish a routine from the very beginning and cut off food and water several hours before bed. Play with them, take them out to p*e, and cuddle them to tire them out. Then put your pup in bed in the crate and close it up. Keep it quiet and dim and if your puppy is sad you can stick your fingers through the crate and they will know you’re there. And unless your puppy needs to p*e they should settle after a few minutes. And as always, have patience!

Time for my favourite post of the week- TIP TUESDAY!
Playing games is a great way to keep your puppy from getting bored and into trouble. Looking for a new game to play with your pup? Here’s one that is mentally stimulating and fun for them!

Get a 12-muffin tin and place one tennis ball in each muffin spot. Randomly hide a small chewy treat under several of the tennis balls. Ask your puppy to “WAIT” as you set the muffin tin on the ground. After a few seconds, say, “RELEASE” or “OK” and let your puppy find the treats. It is fun to watch them try to figure out how to get the treats from under the tennis balls. Refrain from helping them out and let them take their time as that is part of the game! Repeat the fun once all the treats have been found and devoured. Enjoy! And as always tips from Baxter&Bella

Time for another Tip Tuesday! Halloween is quickly approaching and that means candy, chocolate and treats may be taking over a house near you. Keep your puppy safe this holiday season by making sure you keep your puppy away from unsafe foods for them. Training involves lots of food rewards in the beginning and we suggest using kibble, string cheese, carrots, apples, etc. to keep the costs low. But beware! There are foods which are NOT safe for your puppy. Make sure you know about them! Common holiday food items to avoid are:

Almonds
Chocolate
Cinnamon
Garlic
Onions
Ice Cream
Macadamia Nuts
Xylitol
Grapes
Raisins
Fat Trimmings & Bones (no cooked bones!)
Foods with pits or large seeds (peaches, avocados, etc.)
Yeast Dough
Salty foods

Does your puppy LOVE to chew? Chewing is natural dog behavior. In fact, dogs need to chew and to them, everything is chewable. Just like little kids, puppies explore the world around them by putting things in their mouths. It is your job to supervise what your puppy can and cannot put in their mouth, so watch them closely and replace what they shouldn’t be chewing with something they can chew. Never leave a young puppy unattended in your home. A large part of training is prevention! Do not let bad habits form. Use your puppy’s crate or pen for times when you cannot keep your eye on them 100%. Compliments to Baxter&Bella!

Tip Tuesday- Does your puppy have an upset stomach? Try giving him one tablespoon of 100% pure pumpkin puree with his food. Pumpkin is full of fiber and helps regulate your puppy’s digestive tract. Puppies love the taste of pumpkin and it helps settle uneasiness in the stomach. Another thing you can try is to add a probiotic to his meal. Some puppy foods are equipped with a probiotic in them while others you need to add a supplement. A spoonful of yogurt can help as well. And as always, compliments of Baxter&Bella

Because of the rain today, I think it is time for a Thursday Thought! Here are a couple of”do’s” and “do nots” when walking your precious pup outside.
Do wear your pup out at a dog park, by letting them run around off leash (if safe to do so). It wears them out faster and you can get out of the rain quicker. Don’t carry an umbrella, and hope to keep both you and your little friend dry. It can be awkward holding the leash in one hand and the umbrella in the other. Safety first, wet or dry. Do put your pup in a nice raincoat and boots to keep their fur dry. But don’t force them into coats and boots that are too small! Make sure you dry your pups off as soon as you get home. Dogs can get sick just like kids, and they don’t like being wet just as much as you. And finally, DO have fun and enjoy the time you both have together!❤️
