Every time you scoop the litter box is an opportunity to do a quick health check.

It's HOT out there! ☀️ 🔥 Please be cautious about having your dog accompany you to outdoor events (especially if they are on pavement!) and be sure they have lots of shade and fresh water when they do need to be outside. Do you know how to recognize signs of heat stroke in dogs?

If you observe these signs, get your dog out of the heat and to a veterinarian immediately - heat stroke can escalate fast!

🐶UPDATE TO REQUIREMENTS FOR DOGS TRAVELING TO US AFTER AUGUST 1🐶
If you are bringing a dog into the US from a dog rabies-free or low-risk country, you now only need to fill out the CDC Dog Import Form. You no longer require a form completed by your veterinarian (Wooohooo!)
Your dog still needs to be 6 months of age or older
Have a microchip
Be healthy
To see full requirements visit the CDC website
www.cdc.gov/dogtravel
This is great news for all of our clients who travel with their dogs. We will continue to keep you updated should any other changes be made prior to or after August 1!

Most joint health focused diets have omega 3
FAs at varying dosing ranging from 0.59 to 10.11 g/1,000 kcal,
with many brands being under 3.5 g/1,000 kcal (40).

It is imperative to identify the actual eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) concentrations in the food, as not uncommonly alpha lipoic acid (ALA) is used in foods for its omega 3 FA content.

ALA is not an adequate substitute and food should quantify actual levels of DHA and EPA.

In most cases, additional DHA/EPA supplementation is required to reach the scientifically recommended minimum dose of 100 mg/kg daily DHA/EPA (32). Mosley et al 2022

With the multiple heatwaves this summer, Zumma would like to remind everyone of the signs of heat stroke in your pets and the ways to avoid this dangerous situation! ☀️

Signs: Increased heart rate, glazed eyes, heavy panting, difficulty breathing, profuse salivation, in coordination, vomiting, a purple tongue, lethargy, seizures.

Tips for Prevention:
- Keep an eye on the humidy levels: High humidity impairs a dog’s panting cooling process
- Restrict walks to early morning and late evening when the sun is not as strong and the temperatures are lower
- Stick to trails or fields where paw pads don’t come in contact with hot asphalt
- NEVER leave your pet alone in a parked car
- Provide a continuous supply of fresh water
- If your pet is outside, ensure there is shade available
- Be aware of dogs that are at a higher risk for heat stroke. This includes pets that are brachycephalic, elderly, obese, and pets who have heart and lung disease.

If your dog loves a trip to the beach as much as you do, please be aware of the dangers involved in ingesting salt water. 🏖️ 🌊

Most pet owners take precautions to ensure their pet's safety when swimming but may not be aware that swallowing salt water, either for refreshment or accidentally while playing, can have life-threatening consequences. Keep an eye on your pet and try to keep them from ingesting too much salt water!

If your dog ingests too much salt water, contact Maritime at (902) 932-0838 right away.

⚠️ Please remember to leave your pets at home this evening.
🛑 Do not bring them to the fireworks show. Dogs can spook and take off, so it’s best to have the radio or white noise on to try and block out the loud bangs. Close your windows, curtains and keep them in a safe quiet area.
Have a wonderful Canada Day! 🇨🇦

FIREWORKS UPDATE 🎆

With the change in location for this year's Canada Day Celebrations, Fireworks will now be set off on Queen’s Wharf (next to the Port) following Alli Walker’s set at approx 10:00 PM tomorrow, July 1st.

Preventing heatstroke in rabbits is crucial, especially during warm weather. Here are some key tips:

1. **Shade**: Ensure your rabbit's enclosure has plenty of shade. Use a towel, umbrella, tunnel, or cardboard box to provide coverage.

2. **Water**: Hydration is essential. Provide multiple water sources and change them at least twice a day. You can also freeze water bottles, wrap them in towels, and place them in the enclosure.

3. **Cool Breeze**: Use fans or open windows to create a breeze, but avoid uncomfortable drafts. Position fans so your rabbit can move away from the breeze if desired.

4. **Cooling Mats/Ceramic Tiles**: These are effective and affordable cooling options. Cooling mats are available at pet stores or online. You can also freeze ceramic tiles and place them in the enclosure for your rabbit to lie on.

5. **Extreme Heat**: During extreme heat and or heat waves, if possible, bring outdoor rabbits inside to keep them cool and safe.

**If you suspect your rabbit has or has had heatstroke, contact your veterinarian immediately. Cooling your rabbit down gradually is important to avoid causing shock.**

I love how my co-pro-pet sitter in Alaska says it 🤗 All DeTails has been serving pet parents since 2017, and unofficially since 1993 🫣 ❤️

Here’s reason number 907 bazillion why you should hire a professional pet sitter for your pet family members!

We pros are like James Bond - dedicated, efficient, and always on a mission to keep your pets happy and your home safe.

Indeed, we cost more than getting your cousin’s best friend’s niece’s second cousin twice removed, who once walked a goldfish, to pop in, but do you really want to roll the dice on someone who MIGHT show up!?

When you sign up with Alaska Pet Nanny, you’re not just getting a pet sitter; you’re investing in a peace of mind.

We’ve been in the game for almost 9 pet-tastic years (almost a decade, folks!), so you can trust us to show up even if the mailman doesn’t.

Cheers to happy pets and reliable sitters!🙂

Yes 👏🏼 exactly, just because a dog was okay with or liked one dog, doesn’t mean they are going to like them all.

How often do you see this?

Guardians forcing their dogs to meet or spend time with other dogs when clearly they don’t want to.

Heaven forbid your dog doesn’t like a person they meet!

Let’s be honest. We don’t like everyone we meet. So why are we trying to force our dogs?

✅ If you aren’t sure when your dog isn’t interested in another dog or person please take our FREE Body Language Course.

🐕 It’s just as important for dog guardians to recognize when OTHER dogs aren’t interested in your dog, or you for that matter.

🐾PSA Announcement🐾
Since the beginning of the year we have been seeing an increased amount of dogs with ma*****na or narcotic toxicities. We recently saw a puppy for narcotic and ma*****na toxicity who had picked up these substances at a local dog park. A lot of these patients are ingesting these substances while they are out on a walk or playing. This post is to remind all dog owners to be extra careful when walking your furry companion and be vigilant about what they are ingesting. If you are concerned with your pets behavior please don't hesitate to contact us.
