Just like in humans, dogs with arthritis may experience more severe symptoms as cold weather intensifies. Joint pain and stiffness can worsen, making it more painful during the winter season and more common to slip or fall. Here’s a few things you can do to help sooth their pain and prevent an accident:

❄ Maintain a healthy weight - extra pounds add stress to dogs' joints and bones, increasing their likelihood for developing osteoarthritis.
❄ Use dog coats or sweaters to help keep their joints warm.
❄ Walk daily to ensure joints stay lubricated – short and easy strolls are best.
❄ Get them a cozy bed (or several!) designed for pets with arthritis.
❄ Use dog ramps, stairs, and a helpful lift when rising and laying down.

If your pet is struggling with arthritis, our physical rehabilitation service may be able to help manage their symptoms and improve their quality of life. Ask your primary veterinarian about a possible referral to Maritime's rehab department or call 902-932-0838 for more information.

Yes 🙌🏼 exactly my Pionus loves to eat her banana 🍌 and it’s fascinating to see how she manages to not break the peel but get all the fruit 🤯

Enrichment doesn’t need to be complicated! It can be as simple as slicing the banana with the peel on instead of offering pieces of peeled banana.

The lure at the end of a flirt pole for dogs mimes the movements of prey, and can be used to engage with a dog's instinct to chase for play and training.

Happy New Year 🥳🐾✨

Here’s a great idea to celebrate all the little things with your pet throughout 2025! Wouldn’t it be lovely for us to share at the end of the year how amazing our beloved pets are?

🐾 A YEAR OF MEMORIES WITH YOUR DOG 🐾

Start January by celebrating all the special moments you share with your dog. Here’s a simple and meaningful way to do it:

Find an empty jar, box, or tin, anything to hold your memories. Each week, write down one thing about your dog that made you smile, made you laugh, or reminded you how awesome they are. 🐾

It could be a funny moment, a small achievement, or simply a quiet moment that reminded you of how much your dog means to you. Keep adding your notes each week.

Then, on New Year’s Eve, open your jar and read through a year’s worth of love, laughter, and happy moments. It’s the perfect way to reflect on everything that makes your dog amazing. 💞✨

If you start your jar, we would love to see it! Share a photo in the comments below, and feel free to share your favourite moments too.

Our top Facebook post of 2024! 🌟 When you care for an exotic pet, it's important to know the signs that indicate they could be suffering. 🦜🐢🐇🐍

Be on the lookout for these postures and behaviors and contact your veterinarian if you think your pet is in pain. ❌ Never try to treat your pet with human medications since many are toxic to pets.

PEI CARES 2025 Vet Initiative

We are SO excited to be sharing this news with you!

PEI CARES is teaming up with Global Pet Foods to donate $200 to two pet owners in need each month!

Here’s how it will work:
▪️ Each month, we’ll partner with a single vet clinic who will also be helping to sponsor the initiative.
▪️ During the first week of the month, starting in January, individuals using the selected clinic can submit recommendations for someone needing financial aid for their pet’s vet visits. Submissions can be sent via email or Facebook private message.
Submissions may come from:
•The individual in need
•A family member or friend
•Their vet (with the individual’s approval)
▪️ PEI CARES will review all submissions and select two individuals to receive support.
▪️ A $200 credit will be made available at the clinic for each chosen individual and must be used within three months.

We want to extend our heartfelt thanks to Global Pet Foods, the participating vets, and the generous individuals whose donations make this initiative possible. PEI CARES relies entirely on donations, and your support allows us to make a difference.

Please share this post to reach those who could greatly benefit from the aid.

Did you know: Enrichment is only needed for domesticated and captive animals?

It goes in the place of meeting natural needs.

Enriching our dog's lives doesn't have to cost the earth It doesn't have to cost anything much at all. It just has to be safe and interesting.

Reminder ⚠️

Reminder ⚠️

This is a reminder that both dogs and cats are known to ingest antifreeze (an unfortunately sweet tasting substance). This often occurs when antifreeze isn't stored properly or isn't placed out of paw's reach. Antifreeze can cause serious nervous system damage, kidney failure, and death. All it takes is less than a tablespoon!

If your pet has ingested antifreeze, there is an antidote! However, it is EXTREMELY important to get treatment for your pet as soon as possible. Contact Maritime at 902-932-0838 right away. You can also call the Pet Poison Helpline at 1-855-764-7661.

I’m happy to finally share what most of us in the field have been warning about. Librela is not safe for most dogs. I’m sad many have died and have permanent damage because vets and pet parents trusted the use of it. Stay informed, trust your instincts and advocate for your pet, always. ❣️

The FDA has identified and analyzed adverse events in dogs treated with Librela (bedinvetmab injection).
