On the last day of Christmas my favorite cow gave to meeeeee…… a new baby heifer!

It may not be Christmas but it sure felt like it today when my last and favorite cow finally gave birth to a beautiful little heifer. Who the farm manager called May.

That concludes our calving year with 2 heifers and 2 bulls born from our herd. And a heifer and grafted bull calf from the other two we have here.

2023 names :
Molly
Matise
Markus
Marlo
May

Remember how I said we hatched some turkeys?! Well only the 2 hatched so they get to live in the house. They get very well socialized being just the two of them. Tonight when we got home from soccer they would not shut up. They just kept peeping and what can only be described as turkey baby screams. So while I was doing my evening computer work I scooped them up, put them against my chest to be warm and covered their little eyes with a blanket. BOOM! They fell asleep and I got my work done in peace.

Don’t mind the face- trying to take a selfie without moving so much to wake the sleeping babies.
They are now back in their brooder and screaming again. 🤦🏻‍♀️

Holy it’s been awhile since I have posted. As many of you know in 2022 Kyle got hurt which resulted in me going back to work. In the last two years I have moved up in the company, taken courses and learning new things being the safety administer. It has taken some getting used to being so busy with the new job and taking over being the president of the soccer club in 2023. Now, somehow it is 2024. My biggest farm hand has dealt with the chickens over the winter while this mama got used to all the new responsibilities as well as both farm hands being in sports.

But with spring comes new life and a new journey, I am still working, still being a president and coach for soccer but this spring I have found that passion for being outside with my animals again. We built a garden (right beside my chickens so we can chat ), building flowerbeds and making the yard our oasis.

We learned new things with our cows and calves, we lost a calf and grafted 24 hr old dairy bull calf. Had to teach him to suckle as he drank from an open top bucket at the dairy farm. Treated him for scours, then he got an eye infection but with the help of family and books they gave me - we got through it and his name is Markus.
We took on some cows for a family friend- one of them calved in February 😯- we calve in April. But we welcomed a beautiful heifer we named Molly. Then our hazel and poppy girls each had bull calves named matise and Marlo. The farm hands named them! And finally! After three years of breeding Hereford x speckle park we got the most beautiful little red speckle park heifer - I named her Minnie. Through all of the heartache and happiness our little farm hands held the flashlight, got the medicines ready, fixed electrolyte bottles and helped us do it all.

Now onto our chickens! They have started laying more then we can eat, again. But better then them being freeloaders who sqwak at me every time I go to the new garden. The love when I toss over the fresh green grass and are excitedly waiting for grasshopper season where the kids will catch their dinner for them. And rip one leg off so they can’t hop away- morbid farm hands. 😉

Usually I would have a brooder box full of chicks by now but this year we decided to try something new - incubating turkey eggs and IT WORKED came home on Mother’s Day to a beautiful little turkey poult staring back at me. My humidity had dropped while we were away so one got shrink wrapped and died. I may have cried a little for that baby but we talked about the circle of life and carried on. Only to have to help another little guy who pipped but had started to dry and shrink wrap, so we helped him out a little and waited for him to kick out- which he did. NOT AT ALL gracefully- more like a drunk little fuzzy ball trying to weave between pylons. Hilarious cheap entertainment lol.

We ended the day sitting on our beautiful deck that the farm manager built me last year for my birthday- overlooking the pond and watching the horses.

The littlest farm hand is back in the saddle with a flare for going fast. She has figured out that doesn’t need to get off to eat snacks- she can just let her horse who we call “ old man “ but actually named “ Guy” follow someone else while she hands free eats her snacks!
The biggest farm hand is also getting the hand of the saddle and liking it a little more each time.
Soon we will be able to do family rides off into the sunset.

The guard dogs are doing their job and only ask for morning pets and afternoon denta stick treats to be happy. They are protective of the livestock and my female spends most of her days with the calves. My male is a mama suck and watches the house, kids and me if we are outside. He isn’t very far from me if I am outside and if I am not- he is watching the kids at a distance.

I truly am blessed with my life. ❤️

I will try to post more about my simple farm life but until then- please stop to smell the flowers and look at the skies.

When the favorite cow who loves scratches has the most perfect little heifer who also loves scratches!!

Our littlest farm hand wanted to curl up in the straw with her.

I had a bad mom moment and forgot to take a picture of the middle farm hand loving on this beautiful girl. 🤦🏻‍♀️

Now to think of a suitable name?! Kyle says it must start with L, the little says to name her chocolate milk because she drinks milk and is brown!!

We have lots of eggs right now!!! In case someone needs breakfast items.

Our little farm has recently gotten the opportunity to join the loop program and our chickens think this is the best day ever!!

The cows also enjoy their goodies as well pregnant belly scratches from the littlest farm hand!

The donkeys also are loving the warmer weather which means that they can help some loves too!

Annnnnd of course, we can’t forget about our first baby of the year! Out of our girl hazel who is usually the most loving cow, she had a beautiful Hereford bull calf. She is such a good mama and still takes things from your hand but if it’s after you’ve tagged her baby she does it with a little more aggression then usual!

All is good at our little farm ❤️

Hello everyone! It’s been awhile since I posted so I thought I would do an update!!

It has been a very busy and crazy summer for my little farmer family.

Some of the more exciting news!
We, along with many others have had a terrible time with coyotes, so the main man decided we needed some fluffy help. Welcome CeCe and Bruiser, once they are full grown will be on constant patrol. For now however then enjoy spending their time with the goats and chickens and running the yard with mama helping water the other animals.

Speaking of predators, we have caught 8 skunks in the last month who have been helping themselves to the chicken feed and eggs inside the coop. Hopefully we got them all.
We also are doing some predator control for those predators that have been taking my chickens elsewhere to enjoy them. Unfortunately for me, that means a loss of eggs and birds; But we are working on it.

The littlest farmer got a new horse in the summer! Yay!! She was a bit upset when we had to put her horse down in the spring due to a broken leg that was not disclosed when he came to the farm.
Unfortunately our luck didn’t change there and he spent the summer on stall rest getting treated for a wire cut on the leg, although he received lots of attention and extra love it was still a crappy situation for all. He is doing wonderful now.

The main man had an accident in august which resulted in many surgeries with one left to go and has been off work since then. But we are confident he will be back to work in the new year.

This little farmers are doing great with their extra curricular activities, however apparently they felt this mama wasn’t cold enough and we are at the rink 2-3 times a week!! Brrr.

The cows are doing great and we are excited for some speckle / Hereford calves on the spring!

The cattle dog Maggie is also learning her new role and taking to it very nicely. She has been such a big help lately.

The old girl Ada is showing her age but still loves laying in bed by the fireplace where it’s warm!

It’s been a hard year for us as well as many other farmers but we wouldn’t change a single thing about it.

Along with the hardships comes great beauty.

Since the weather has been getting colder and the snow is staying, we wish you all a wonderful and happy Holiday season!

Xoxo

We are a family run little farm just trying to bring back a simpler and cheaper way of life to our family, friends and community.
We have chickens and turkeys for both eggs and meat.
Cows for beef and goats for entertainment and snuggles.
Anything that leaves our farm is to the highest of our stnadards and we can tell you exactly what went into our animals.
In the spring we arw hoping to get our big garden up and running and get some canning done in the fall!

Much love,
The lavertu's
