And we can teach you!

When people get a new dog and want to start out right, or have a dog who’s behaviour isn’t awesome, they seek out training.
The majority of training teaches you to have control over your dog via verbal obedience commands like Sit, Down, Place, etc.

While having control is important, I prefer to have dogs who CHOOSE good behaviour in the first place.
If my dog is being well behaved, I probably don’t need to use my control commands.
Yes, I still teach them because they have their uses.

But teaching your dog good behaviour requires more understand of WHAT behaviour they are doing in the first place.

For example, a dog who invades your space excessively.
Step 1- Stop using obedience to get them out of your space. Stop asking or telling your dog to “go to your bed”, sit, down…
Those don’t explain to your dog that the issue you are trying to address is space. They don’t know that “go to your bed” actually means “please give me a little space”. So we deflect from the actual problem by resorting to obedience to control the physical position of the dog.

But the physical state of the dog doesn’t determine their mental state.
WHY are they invading your space?
Are they being possessive of you when another person or dog is near you?
Are they being controlling of you and your space, like blocking a door when you’re trying to leave the house?
Are they anxious and needing your reassurance?
All 3 of these scenarios require a different approach to help your dog change their MIND, not their physical location.

When we start to understand our dog’s behaviour more in-depth, we can address the root of their struggles, not just cover it up with an obedience command.

Anti-resource guarding with puppies. I have a slightly different take on this than traditional training because most methods exclude the conversation between you and the dog. Most methods are cause & effect/actions & results. Example: Cause: I put my quarter in the gum ball machine Effect: a gum ball comes out. Dogs are very capable of learning these types of things but a gumball machine doesn’t have personality, emotions or the ability to have a conversation. Dogs do! I prefer to have conversations about their choices (behaviours, different from obedience) because then I know the dog understands and isn’t just being bribed or tricked by treats. Instead we have an intentional conversation about the topic, in this case, giving me bone (not me taking the bone) and I reward the dog for their choice. The reward came after the puppy chose to let me have the bone instead of using the reward to bride the puppy away from the bone. The end result is the same. I get the bone. But one is a trick and doesn’t give credit to how intelligent the dog is. The other is a cooperative conversation about respectful sharing. Puppy featured from @gracegoldens

Trim puppy nails weekly and adult dogs every 2 weeks. Long nails can have a really negative impact on your dog’s posture and gait, causing havoc on their joints. The more often you do trims, and the more enjoyable you make them, the easier it will become. Video featuring @gracegoldens puppy Chewie
