Some quick tips to remind you what socializing your dog looks like. HINT none of these tips include visiting the dog park! Direct dog-dog interactions can be hard to navigate and can lead to very negative associations. Work on socializing your dog to the world, not flooding then with "fun"

If you have left over Himalayan Cheese Chew nubs, don't throw them away! Microwave for 45-60 seconds, depending on the size of the nub for a puffed up crunchy treat for you dog!

When the Cheese Chews become too small they can become a choking risk for dogs. The can also get stuck on the palette of your dogs mouth which can be very scary for them. By ensuring that your dogs chew is the appropriate size you can avoid these issues!
Happy Crunching!

Tail Talk🐾🐩🐕

You may have heard before, "dogs only wag their tails when they're happy". This is a myth and a dangerous one at that. Tail wags can happen for all kinds of behavior in dogs, and many people have been bit and/or attacked for approaching dogs simply because "the tail was wagging". Learning your own dogs, as well as other FORMS OF WAGS is detrimental in understanding body language and can save you and your dog from some very unwanted situations.

Common FOW's (Forms of Wags 😂)

THE WINDMILL. Most likely the most widely recognized FOW. This wag sees the tail spin in circles, like a windmill. Typically associated with a happy dog. I generally see this FOW on my dogs Mickey and Rooster, their tails spin when I arrive home, prepare their meals, get them ready for walks, or load them in the car. Happy Dog, Happy Tail.

INSECURE LOW WAG. This wag is seen alot in puppies, nervous dogs or even just excited dogs who are being cautious. This FOW occurs lower to the ground, but is not tucked under the body. It can wag fast or slow, the slower the wag, generally means the more caution the dog is taking. I see this FOW alot when walking under exposed dogs, puppies or dogs new to the area. You may also see this FOW when dogs encounter new people. Reading the body language as a WHOLE will help you best guide the situation.

THE HAPPY HIP SMACKER. The tail wags from side to side and either is long enough to hit the body on either side, or your dog leans into the wag to create the hip smack (not always audible 😂). This is a happy wag, YET can be associated with insecurity. I know, personally with Harlow she is a nervous by breed and disposition type of dog. So she tends to lean on the cautious side with all her interactions. By reading her full body AND watching how her wag may change (does it drop or turn into a spin?)

Can't forget the tail-less. Whether your dog has no tail at all, just a nub or a nub hidden by hair, it will make it all the more difficult to ready what your dog is saying. That why you need to always read the body as a whole to get the whole picture.

A fun Challenge for you to try with you dog! Can you get up to ONE full minute of eye contact?

Eye contact increases focus, decreases distraction and reactivity. If your dogs not looking, they're not fully listening!

Friday Crew Group Shot!

During Adventures this crew worked on Impulse Control (wait, place, down-stay), leash skills, and safety training like recall, heel, front, and stay! We hit up in Orillia and got everyone some training time!

🎉 Minnie worked on leash manners, ignoring people, positioning and more! Minnie loves to learn new things and lures so easily, training with her is always so fun! She enjoys it just as much as I do!

🎓Crosby worked on greetings (he met 2 people without jumping, and played with a puppy very politely! He worked on down-stay in the small animal section to work on his impulse control! He even put himself in a side position when feeling overwhelmed! So proud of this boy!

💪Rooster has never been in a store (and it showed) he was nervous of pretty much everything so we did some slow exposure work with lots of sniffs, and space given. He wore his muzzle to feel more comfortable! At the end i let him pick a toy and he has been carrying around the toy all night and morning 🥰

Success all around!

Ruby has been going on walks without Big Brother Ziggy and has been doing amazingly with building up their confidence. You can see her finally giving rooster a chance, and a sniff. She would not have done that if the Ziggy was around. Reactivity can be contagious, and dogs that normally don't react to something can become reactive through another dogs reacting (make sense?). Ruby needs to experience things for herself, and not live through Ziggy eyes. When siblings come together to daycare, even though they're not littermates it can be very difficult for them to actually make friends and associate with the other dogs. It's best for dogs to go separately, and learn who they are individually. This is even more true for siblings that are actually littermate!

Someone enjoyed their first day of Adventure!

Rooster (formerly Rusty), my foster dog, was a brilliant addition to the park session today! He had his muzzle on to keep him and the other safe (just incase!) But was a superstar! (It even came off once and he came right to me so I could adjust it, and then he kept playing) all three of these dogs needed to get some more exposure to dogs, the world and life in general. To learn boundaries, build trust and encourage their curiousity, that's what adventures are all about!

Friday's crew loving park time! Nothing gets in the way of these dogs fun! With newbie Laszlo joining today, and old friend Buster adding to the fun, every had a great time.

(Minnie's face 🤣 teeth dont =aggression. Minnie is one of the best teacher dogs I have worked with in a long time. She has a wonderful play ethic, but does not allow bullying or rude behaviour. This face has gotten many dogs mislabeled and removed from play usually because people think it is the beginning of a fight. This is not always true. If your dog is a toothy, vocal player with high boundaries reach out to a dog savvy trainer and see how you can better understand their style!)

01/12/2021

Let's talk play styles.

Here are 2 videos, both show the same dogs learning the same thing. How to play with each other.

Crosby- young lab pup
Minnie- adult collie mix.

Crosby has lots of energy, but as a puppy can get carried away with fun. He's a baby. Luckily he's is a sponge and can learn very quickly at this age. And the best teachers for dogs , are other dogs!

Minnie is using body language (tail, hackles, wide eyes, ears and more) to communicate with Crosby when he's being to much. She is also using vocal communication to encourage and redirect his play. Her growls have been and will be misunderstood by people and by dogs, I have to admit I was put off by how low and gutteral the were at first but as I learned her language it became obvious she's a vocal player. Vocal players are not aggressive, they are just excitable players!

As an owner and leader it is our responsibility to help manage play so that Minnie doesn't have to tell Crosby off harshly if he doesn't listen to her the first few times.

You can see in the second video Minnie actually asking for my help to stop the pushy puppy. Once the focus has been redirected she engages with him again (her own way of positive reinforcement!)

I love dogs. They teach us so much!

I will be holding the first ever There and Bark Again Seminar Saturday Dec 11th at 1pm on BODY LANGUAGE IN DOGS! This seminar will go over basics like tail wags, ear communication, hackles or hair talk, eye contact and even playstyles! If you are interested in learning what your dog is saying to you, come join our seminar today! Only 10 spots available, not dog needs! Only $20!

This is Rusty.

Rusty is a 2 year old Shep X (Old owners have said Shep and Akita cross). Rusty is currently in a tough spot as he had been surrendered to a woman, after being taken from his original owner who had threaten to shot him for biting someone during Thanksgiving. This bite did not draw blood. None have his bites have drawn blood. Rusty is currently living in a car next to my facility, and I need to get him something better. She has done a lot for him and wants to do right by him and get him the help he needs.

Rusty is the definition of an insecure dog. He is needy, he is territorial, he has guarding issues and trust issues with strangers and any one he does not have a bond with.

Rusty is looking for an adopter, rescue or sanctuary that is willing to help him find a forever home. I am working with his owner to help get this guy the proper training, housing and life. Rusty is not neutered or UTD on any shots. (EDIT: rusty may actually be up to date on his shots)

I will be updating shortly and reaching out to rescues directly. If anyone can help or has any info on how to get Rusty into a stable and structured setting.

(Update: we have submitted an application of surrender to a few rescues/sanctuaries, will keep posted if he is accepted to any of them)
