Age has always scared me. A body that isn’t quite as resilient, a calendar with less time on it, and clock that seems to be accelerating. I was watching the seconds go by on my watch and I was certain my watch was broken – time is that favourite candy bar from childhood – it used to be bigger, it used to taste different. But time is a patient teacher, and I’m always a student.

Age has taught me to prioritize my health. That wealth is in people and experiences. Age gives me the tools I need to listen to my body, a sometimes uncomfortable vessel which I’m always learning to love. Age has taught me to be present enough to notice the sun-dipped leaf, and the soft smile of a dog: the bookends of life’s inevitable tests. Age is a practice in resilience, that hopes to find me on the other side of a storm. The rose buds above a stem of thorns.

It’s my birthday! The teacher’s mandatory check-in, and this year, the fear is simply less. I feel grateful for the rose buds and the candy bars and the storms and thorns. I’m excited for what’s to come.
