How much protein does my horse need each day?
Most horse owners know that protein is responsible for muscle growth and to add top line. But, dietary protein is also broken down into amino acids which make new proteins, like keratin which is in hooves and manes and tails, enzymes, like amylase, which breaks down complex sugars into simple sugars, and hormones such as insulin.
Horses get most of their amino acids from forage…most hay has 8-14% protein. A horse that requires more may use a bagged feed. Many have soybean meal as their base which supplies 51% crude protein and 6.11% lysine (the most important amino acid in the diet).
Some common signs that your horse may have protein deficiency are a weak top line, muscle loss, poor growth, recurring or slow recovery illness, poor performance, rough coat and weak hooves.
In general, a 500kg horse requires a minimum of 610g/day up to 720g/day depending on their age, workload and health status.
Three Amigos is an essential amino acid supplement for horses providing lysine, methionine and threonine in a 5:3:2 ratio. This tri-amino blend contains three rate limiting amino acids that are commonly deficient in the equine diet.
